Yes Sjors I see now It is as I expected, where the rope loops around things It looks really good and has inspired me to try and do that without a machine Very nice Sjors Thanks

Ok Sjors, I think I am mostly with you So are you just serving the parts of the rope that are used to make loops and such, or actual lengths of bare rope I am trying to understand where it would be necessary and can only think of loops Photos would be useful and Monday is fine I am not bothered by this 'work' thing luckily Sent from my iPad Laying back watching the golf after a bit of exercising

That looks so good Greg As I have just posted on Slogs, I can't see me ever doing a proper bashed build as I have neither the kit or the room to do it However having quality materials and having to work and shape them yourself you get the impetus to get it right You certainly have done that Greg Great work

Lovely job sorting that Slog Obviously a lot different to mine But I am not going to worry too much The biggest difference I think between yours and mine And I keep saying it Is the quality of the woods They really make you want to get it perfect I can't see me ever doing a totally bashed build as I just don't have the kit, or indeed the room for the kit But that would certainly get you into the mindset to get it as perfect as possible Keep up that faultless work Slog

Hi Sjors Can't help with the shrouds as I haven't got a clue what you are talking about Also you are mentioning knees which never goes down well with me What about the serving machine then Are you just going to do special bits on it ??? Or are you going to do a lot of rope on it ?????

Nice job Grant That splice is very similar to how you do the braid loop on the end of a fly fishing line It will will work with most multi strand thread with maybe a drop of CA to help it stay in place

Lovely work Tom Nice barrels That was my forte, turning For the model work I had a Unimat with a special double power motor to give it some proper strength as I used to turn some quite large things on it And serving your own ropes Are you just going to do that for special lengths or are you going to try and do quite a bit with it ??????? All in all it's coming along very nicely Tom

Thanks a lot everyone I had a message from the paint shop yesterday and they are waiting for one of the colours I may not get it until towards the end of next week so I will take it day by day My ribs are still fairly sore and the Physio has given me some exercises to do to help my back I therefore have plenty to do

Lovely Sjors Absolutely lovely The culmination of a lot of stress and strain and hard work You are to be congratulated for turning out such a fine ship Well done

Great to hear Sjors A job well done We do want the photos though Loads of them Can't wait

Yes Sjors and Andy That is my thinking I need to decide if I am building it as a work barge, or how it is now, a corporate meetings/away day ship The paint finish could be either as I think it had similar colours at some point during it's working life and is definitely that colour in the most modern photos I have I suppose that a work barge would possibly be a little 'dirtier' than a corporate vessel But I may be wrong, the seamen may be very proud of their vessel I will have a ponder I won't be doing much today as I am off to hospital to see the physiotherapists

Really good day today Things went well The first thing I did was finish off the fore and aft deck planking Still not sure about a bit of pencil caulking I then put the planking on the top edge of the hull and fitted the fore and aft railings It all went together quite well I didn't attempt to curve the hull edge planking but did small cuts and will touch up and paint to hide So all in all pleased with a good day Still getting pain spasms in my ribs though I really need that paint now

Well You know me I can't sit still I started the planking in the stern It seemed to take forever as it is only 3mm wide It was a shade tricky as well I am debating now whether to 'caulk' it I personally am not sure it would improve it However if there is someone out there who thinks it has to be caulked I will listen to reason Hopefully I will get the bow planking done tomorrow I may then start the planking strips around the top of the hull Not sure if they are still called gunwales or whether that is purely the name on a gunned up vessel

I may be misunderstanding you Sjors, but are you saying you can find no information on the Agamemnon ???????? Surely not !!!!!!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Agamemnon_(1781)

Lovely work Sjors You are leaping ahead and making a very good job of it As you know when I get my body back together I will be working on the Will I am doing this to get a feel of sails There is actually more rigging on the Will than you might think One thinks of a barge as a low lying boat pulled along by a horse But this was a Thames Barge and used to sail up and down the large river at quite a speed to deliver stuff from the outer ports to London itself As an expert in rigging Sjors, and others, have a look at the plans and see if there is anything you may think may be a little tricky I am hoping the rigging will be fairly simple as I have done it on the Racehorse and Thermopylae, but sails are a mystery yet to be mastered So have a look and see what you think See if I can get the rigging to look as good as yours Sjors

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
