I started to feel bad for those knights having lost their feet and decided to have a go at making new feet for them. I also felt it was an oportunity to make them more individual and appear to have slightly different positions. So some have 2 and the others are bending their knee behind the shield. Actually if someone else needs to do them, make the feet when the knights are fixed on the ship, hindwise it was a good way. And it does look more realistic and detailed with them on. I didnt think it would work, but I was wrong. I also did some touch up on the faces. Man, painting noses in that scale makes my hands feel shaky... lol /Matti

Thank you Alistair! The original feet on the BB knights were really small and stumpy, so the difference is not big to these. The shield gives problems, leaving only one foot . It was a bit difficult to decide, but I think I did the best solution with this way. /Matti

Did a project picture with the last pic also. Is it possible to make a signature pic of it and link it to this thread? Also did some experiments with bending the plastics, and the hot water method seems to work well. There are many figures needing to be bent, so I need a method that is reliable. /Matti

Ah, no problem with the link. I just have a problem with youtube commenters that talk down nice videos. Ive seen to many examples of people -even small kids- showing something they are proud of, and then someone thinks its funny to bully them in the comment field. It makes me sick. But I liked the video. /Matti

Cheers Paweł! Are there any polish ship models from that era? Since Poland was such a huge force in Europe there should be subjects. /Matti

Michael (member md1400cs) is good for questions about the nails. He have nails on his Vasa ship, and it looks really nice. I had a hard time to decide to use nails or not, but in the end I decided not to use them, as I dont think I could get the look right. You can also consider to use flat colors, or add a coat of flat varnish on top of that stern (that looks really nice btw!). For me its easyer to get it to to look used and vibrant with flat colors. Again its more a question about aesthetics and what look you like. But if you look at Lawrences (member canoe) build it looks really nice in gloss paint! So you can go either way. Looking forward to see progress of this! /Matti

Managed to get time to paint the geat knights. I got in a flow last night and decided to continue even if it ment to little sleep. The knights are my favourite sculptures on Vasa and it felt right to start with them. The BB figures are pretty nice. Its not Finemolds quality but ok The surface and some details could be better. But considering they were ment to be gilded, as they didnt know Vasa had polychrome sculptures when they designed them, Im surprised how well they designed them. BB did their work basing them on the real sculptures but once again they seem very much based on Landstöms book. Landström (and therefore BB) gave his knights swords, and to me that implies that people back then thought the knigh sculptures held swords, considering how thorough and detailed Landströms book is. The six knights in the kit are all from the same sculpt and therefore share the same pose and look, not individual like the originals. I tried to individualize them by painting the details like the knights on the 1:10. I also tried to get the blue look of them, even if I believe we cant be certain how they looked when Vasa was painted (the full size replica of the knight at the museum is brown, something I think means that they havent got enough color samples of the armor to be sure). But I really like the look of the 1:10 knights. I also gave nr one and six visors down like the original. The knight figures gave two problems to me. One, they were to tall to get a good fit, secondly their legs were to tall in proportions. After thinking my simple solution to these problems was to go medieval on them and cut their feet of, and then trim the helmet feathers a little. I decided not to try and make new feet, but went fo a stylized look instead (the putty have no feet either). I could be the one to blame for the bad fit, as there are many lines and angles meeting at the window area, and I guess I made the area to tight. /Matti

Nice work! Im getting closer to start with that part of the build. Im a little nervous tbh... So far I feel that I can relate the steps with scratching or kit bashing styrene models, but rigging will be all new. /Matti

Cheers BE! Im amazed at the sea base you can make for your models. They look so realistic... Something I hope to learn someday. Thanks Andy! Yeah hot water or heating gun turned to low heat are what I will try first. Thanks for the tip! Alistair, wow thanks for the kind words! They make me happy. My wife lived in NZ for a year, and it seems to be such a lovely country. /Matti

Thanks for the tip, Mark! Yeah that the plan. Did you have any problems with your figures being hard to fit? The Gothic knights are slightly tall, and on the boxcover it looks like the BB guy doing that kit had the same problem. Cheers Mark T! /Matti

Glad if I could help! Experiment and find the way you like to do it. Thanks for the nice comment! /Matti

And here is where Im at now. I have glued the akterspegel into place, and it feels good to finally get it in place as it was a while since I painted it. I still need to add the lowest vertical planks on the galleries, but I want to see how the sculptures fit, before doing that. Time to get that magnifier and start painting sculptures. I am nervous about bending them for the galleries, as the plastic is a little hard, like Mark pointed out earlier, so fingers crossed. /Matti

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
