Hello Sparky and a warm welcome to the forum from 'Down Under'. That model looks like it's got a lot of character and would be well worth restoring. John

Nice to see you progressing, Gary. That looks a very nice pair of hard working otter boards. John

What is a jewel iron and what does it look like?
Jim Lad replied to Roger Fyre's topic in Masting, rigging and sails
The jewel blocks were usually either suspended from a bolt driven into the end of the stunsail boom or secured with a grommet, but there may have been a more sophisticated fitting on this ship. As Mark says, a picture would help. John -
Keith, I'm just catching up after a time of not checking your log. That anchor gear I superb, and I think lowering those side supports on the other model is a good idea. Stay safe! John

Looking good, Patrick. When you replace the ash bucket, don't forget to lower it to the deck to stop it swinging! John- 1,006 replies

Too late! We've been away down the coast for a few days and I was thinking I might get a chance to go into the city this week and rescue the 'Meteor', but the museum is now closed until further notice! Maybe I should start something else at home. John

Never heard of that happening, Alan (fake news?). What newspaper is that? John

Hydraulic Dredge by Steve Harvath
Jim Lad replied to Steve Harvath's topic in - Build logs for subjects built 1851 - 1900
If you're still debating the machinery colour, Steve, I'd go for the green! How big is the tubing? Could you use soft plastic and stiffen the bends with glue? Or perhaps simply use copper wire? John

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
