dvm27 reacted to DaKea90 in Sloop-rigged packetboat by Strelok - 1:35 - based on Chapman plans - POB
Hi guys,
after a long time I'm almost done with my current project. I know, it's not maritime themed, but I'll show it anyways. The tanks only need their tracks and the soldiers in the back some paint. The next project will be a ship again.
I've been uncertain, WHICH ship I should build as a next. There are just too many good-looking vessels out there. My first plans were the Pinas-ship Berlin or the Brigantine Groß-Friedrichsburg, then I favoured more "modern" designs like the french L'Amaranthe (ship-rigged) or the british HMS Speedwell of 1752. Then I found out about the french Etna-Class heavy corvettes, armed with 20 24-pdr guns(!), but I thought "Yeah, all good, but also quite complicated". By chance, I found, that the af Chapman-plans are available online via the archive of the swedish naval museum. I looked them through and there was one boat, that caught my eye.
It's a 38.3 ft long packet boat (Plan XLII, No. 5).
It's small enough to not take up a huge amount of space and to be built in 1:35 scale (like all my tanks) to have a good comparison in size. Also it is - in scale - big enough to not be a fiddly affair (like the Golden Yacht, I've built). Furthermore, with one mast, it is simple enough for me. This will be my first POB build.
As there was not much to do at work during the last week, I was able to draw the plans in the CAD-programme, that we use at work to draw wooden houses or roofs 😆 Pictures of that will follow later. I only had time for the announcement now.
Stay tuned!

One of my favorite You Tubers The Art of Boat Building recently did a video on making a mast. He used many of the same techniques we taught in our Admiralty Models workshop on masting and sparring for making a tapered mast. Check out his video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaWIIiv9zRg&ab_channel=TheArtofBoatBuilding. His next video was on building a half hull model and his lofting and building of the model should interest many of the modelers here. Bob is a true artist and craftsman:

Been awhile since I made this frame but perhaps the photo will show better what I've done. I'm pretty sure I started with a wider toptimber and shaped it to fit the offset. It needs to be wide enough at the top to form the side of the port. Then shape downwards in a smooth arc to fay into the next futtock.

I follow the art of boat building as well and you are right. What i find so interesting is that we follow as much as we can, the same techniques in model building. Sometimes it so hard to see the techniques but in full scale it becomes so obvious .

Post One Hundred and Forty-nine
Building the Launch.
Another four days and another hull planked.
The planking method described in the blurb is simplified with the aim of getting a smooth surface that will ultimately be painted, not a bad approach.
7804
If a varnish only finish is required then a more structured approach is desirable, if not easy to achieve at this scale, as all shaping is mostly done by eye.
7814
Fitting the final spiled plank.
7817
The Launch feels easier to plank than the Pinnace, but even so it feels harder than my previous small boat builds (Cutter and Yawl) of only 18 months ago.
7816
A case perhaps of increasing decrepitude and decreasing dexterity.
7821(2)
7815
The final fettlin’ of the hulls will be done once they are all planked.
7825(2)
7826(2)
Two down, two to go - onto the Yawl.

As Greg said, the top timber is initially wider. Then, the aft portion of the upper part of the timber is sanded down and the fore portion of the lower timber is sanded. In his picture you cannot tell that the entire timber is narrower because the band is hiding the joint. If you go to the first post in my Echo (link in my signature) you can see the frame in question.

The belaying pins are now installed in their shroud deflectors. That's a term I had never read before but that's what they're called according to Markquardt. Perhaps they're called pin rails only when affixed to the inner bulwarks. The deflectors have grooves filed on the outboard edge for the shrouds and lashings inboard and are surprisingly strong once attached. At any rate, I was able to hone my lathe technique to turn out consistent pins. Next it's on to ratlines. Perhaps Archjofo would fly in from Germany to show me how he successfully duplicated actual practice when securing them to the outer shrouds. Personally. I believe he used Photoshop as this is not humanly possible to do.

The eye likes what the eye likes, Steve. Personally, I think R's version looks a bit jarring. For another approach watch this YouTube video by our member Ohla. I think it's beautifully done.

Got the keel all glued up, got the false keel cut and started fitting bulkheads one at a time. Trying to be as accurate as I can because any mistakes at this point will make for bigger problems down the road.
