It has taken me a little while to get through all the pages of this build. But once again Augie, you inspire me to build more. I am really enjoying watching this build now that I am caught up.

She's looking superb, Augie.
Here in Sydney, the onset of winter will mean that we get slightly shorter days and, if the weather gets really cold, the minimum daily temperature might very briefly get down to zero!

augie reacted to GuntherMT in Indian Girl Canoe by GuntherMT - FINISHED - Midwest Products - Scale 1:12 - SMALL
The little canoe continues to progress in my spare moments. Work has been crazy this last couple of weeks, so the canoe has been nice to have, as I can pop into the work room, do a couple of planks in 30 minutes, and then go back to work or take care of other things around the house. When I'm working on the AVS I tend to want to have at least an hour or two in a solid block to work on it, and I just haven't had that lately, so if I didn't have the canoe going I probably wouldn't be doing any ship work at all.
In any case, progress update.
The more planks I got on, the simpler the clamping arrangements became, as there just isn't that much room left to put planks on as the remaining area to be planked shrinks. The little alligator clamps worked great, since the 'bulkheads' are not going to be part of the finished model, so it's no big deal if their sharp teeth tear up that wood a little bit.
I also used a lot of little spare pieces of planking material to act as wedges.
And.. then it was done. The last plank in place, and rough sanded.
After work tonight I'll do a final sanding to smooth the wood out a bit and remove any fuzzies, and then pull it from the strong-back to complete the planks at the stems which extend above the gunwale and aren't supported by the strong-back.

Hi all. I am mostly finished the lower hull. The hull turned out ok. Im going back and forth about treenailing the lower hull. Im not sure if it will be worth the effort. Im kind of burned out on plwnking and the hull. Any thoughts? Other than taht, I still have a bit of clean up to do and then I'm going to apply a natural stain.

Thanks to all for looking in.
Managed to make some progress. The inner bulwark planking on the quarterdeck has been completed.
Now we'll concentrate on getting the rails on all around.
Hope everyone is ready for the (long awaited) change of seasons. Here, in the Northern Hemisphere, it means a decrease in shop time as the great outdoors beckons. But I hope you all have had a healthy and productive winter 'building season'.

Now started work on the whaleboats...four smaller and fine-detailed models in their own right. This method is to use small wooden flats, called lifts, that build the boats from keel level up. They then get carved and sanded out in the following order: Bow, Stern, and sheer (all outside) first. Then the interior is brought to shape followed by completing the exterior outboard sides. They get really thin.... 1/16" to 1/32" so no messing around with a Dremel for me (I have shaky hands with that thing). I'm going to carve closely, then hand sand or use a small electric mini sander to get into tight spaces.

Now ten months into the build, and I can say that the hull details are complete for now. I can begin work on the whaleboats, masts, spars, rigging.... oh my. So much more to do ;-) I love it.

Thanks for the likes and the comments.
Gianpiero,
You are quite right. I haven't sanded nor shaped the ebony strip and the thick strip above it (in the picture). This will be taken care of next as I want to have the planking at the gunports done and finish applied to protect them on both sides first. Thanks for being another set of eyes...
Edit: I've studied it again on the ship. If I can't fix it, I'll rip it off and re-do it but right now, it looks fixable since it's still rough.

The red looks good. That simple jig will do the job. Wait until you get to use Chuck's spiling jig !!
Take your time on every aspect of the stern. Alignment is crucial ---- but it really pays off in the end.
