Tools, tools and more tools....
pontiachedmark replied to CPDDET's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Gidday John. Thanks for the update and assessment on the Stylo. I'll look into the Markatt here in Oz. All the best. Mark -
Gidday Zbip. Just a few thoughts. A Mill or a Lathe are not necessary to accomplish good results. I often think of the Navy Board Models of the 17th and 18th centuries. The results are astounding, no Mills or Lathes or electricity for that matter. Some models are made with basic tools a brain and a pair of hands. All the best with your build. Mark

Gidday Zbip and a warm welcome from the Land Downunder. I thought I was looking at a full sized vessel. Lovely work. You will find a lot of support and encouragement here. As to sailing my models I have serious doubts about their seaworthiness. I have a river near me but its a bloody big thing so echoing Mark Taylors comments: lack of suitable shallow water, to aid in salvage operation, is a problem. All the best with your next build. Mark.

The 1864 Composite Ship 'City of Adelaide'
pontiachedmark replied to Jim Lad's topic in Nautical/Naval History
Gidday Jim Lad. I've been trying to locate some plans for this magnificent vessel. I've been in touch with the volunteer group and they are looking into my requests. I've sourced some deck plans for the Carrick, which I believe is a sister ship. The search goes on. Fantastic photos. Mark. -

Gidday John. Have you researched the Dremel Stylo? I know it's difficult to get past the manufacturers guff. I'll have to struggle with my Dremel as the micromotor is way out of my league. Please keep us updated if you purchase the Dremel. Mark. -
Hello from Southern California!

Gidday and welcome from the land Downunder Andrea. Great advice from Chuck, if practical for you to have a look at a club. You will find plenty of support and encouragement here. Remember that every question, within reason, is valid. Although at times some questions are infuriating. Ask my grandchildren what I mean after 300 times of why, why, why. All the best with your Phantom. Mark -

Tools, tools and more tools....
pontiachedmark replied to CPDDET's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Gidday everyone. Vossiewulf I agree 100% with your comment. Buying cheap tools is false economy. Once you total the cost over a lifetime it's far more economical to purchase the best quality you can afford. Although price is not an indication of quality, if something is cheap it is usually cheaply made. Having said that I have to weigh up cost versus need, I check myself to determine if I need the tool or do I like the tool. I'm off the soapbox now. Best regards to all. Mark. -
Gidday ShipWrong and a warm welcome from the land Downunder. You will definitely find heaps of support and encouragement here. Some of the work on this site defies description. Enjoy yourself and don't be afraid to ask questions. Remember all questions, within reason, are valid. All the best with your build. Mark

Hello all and already looking for help
pontiachedmark replied to Signode388's topic in New member Introductions
Gidday from the Land Downunder Iliya. Search through the build logs for the Phantom. Regarding tools, again the build logs will show tools that are used frequently. I mostly use hand tools. I do have a rotary tool, Dremel or equivalent. Magnification and good lighting are important to me. I try to think about a tool before I buy. I have been guilty of buying tools that I think are designed more for looks than practicality. I hope I haven't confused you. All the best with your build. Mark. -
Gidday OC. I sincerely hope you and your wife's situation improves. I too have some health issues but fortunately I do not have your added burden of freezing weather. Wishing all the best for you and your family. Mark

Gidday Dan and a warm welcome from Downunder. There are a lot of knowledgeable people here, unfortunately I am not one of them, who willingly share. You will find lots of support as well. Good luck with your build. Mark.

Gidday Robbert and welcome from the Land Downunder. Search for Victory build logs to see which plans you like and which scale suits you. All the best for with your build. Mark.

Gidday George and a warm and hearty welcome from the Land Downunder. Unfortunately geography makes my suggestions on wood redundant. Aside from that you are sure to find encouragement and support here. Just a suggestion ,look into some scratch build logs from your fellow Canadians and see what wood they are using and possible suppliers. All the best with your build. Mark.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
