BLACK VIKING reacted to CDW in MRAP ATV by CDW - FINISHED - Rye Field - 1:35 Scale
This is the Rye Field Models, Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) in 1:35 scale

The following description of the vehicle is borrowed from Wikipedia:
"The Oshkosh M-ATV is a Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle developed by the Oshkosh Corporation for the MRAP All Terrain Vehicle (M-ATV) program. Intended to replace M1114 HMMWVs, it is designed to provide the same levels of protection as the larger and heavier previous MRAPs but with improved mobility."

Rye Field is a relative newcomer (to me) to the plastic modeling scene. The examples of their models I own are highly detailed and very well presented. The instructions are more like a high quality magazine, with 30 pages of well written instructions, full color diagrams, and reference photos.

Following is an excellent link with photographs of the real vehicle:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oshkosh_M-ATV#/media/File:Fort_Irwin_National_Training_Center_-_M-ATV_-_3.jpg

I shall begin this build within the next day or so.

Lower hull is finished. The planking has laid down fairly smooth so sanding didn’t take very long. Applied poly finish over the mahogany wood on the lower hull and over the first two bands of wales and yellow wood. Once the rest of the planking is complete, I will extend the finish so that all the surfaces are evenly covered.

Also today my latest library addition arrived. I intend to carve my own decorations for this ship as I did the last.

    Hi Everyone,

It has been awhile since my last post, but I have made a fair amount of progress. the planking has been raised above the 2nd gun deck and all elements of the 2nd deck have been completed. Given my problems with the gun carriages on the lowest deck, I have used dowels to secure the carriages on this deck. I can't imagine them coming loose this time.

One of the features of this kit are the elaborate rear galleries, and one of the mysteries of the kit is how in the world do you build them with the materials and instructions supplied. There is only one schematic of how the various parts are supposed to fit, and no other written instructions that I could find. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how putting the pieces together per the schematic, or any other way, was going to end up looking like the finished model pictures I had seen. I finally gave up!

Although it was probably too early in the build to start the galleries, I decided there was not much point in continuing on with the build unless I could complete them. I decided to ignore the schematics and do a freelance build that would end up looking like the terrific pictures I had found on the internet. In the end I think things turned out pretty well as shown in the pictures below.

BLACK VIKING reacted to Gallgeo in OLD TRAMP STEAMER REFURB
    Hi
i'm brand new to the Forum from Scotland , also a novice at wood although have years of carpenter experience with most of the tools I need
to make a reasonable go of it.
Currently started building the St Elme a french fishing boat which was given to me from an old relative ( mind you i'm not young myself at 71!!)
Probably not the best model to begin with,as all the plans/ instructions are in french which is not a great start but have my trusty google translator
so I'm muddling through. Got  great help from Downeaster who's done a blog on the St Elme. I hope to start my own blog soon on this one.
However the reason for this topic is I've also been given an old scratch built tramp steamer which i hope to do something with for the donor.
It is  33ins long 5 1/2ins beam kitted out with old radio valve equipment . There is no history at all for the model It could have been built in the 40's 50's
    don't know.
Ive added some photos to show the shape and wonder if any members recognise it.
Ive seen photos plans of a steamer called Melanie 2 which is similar although the stern deck looks a bit out of proportion and I would think of shortening it.
I would be grateful of any ideas ( nice ones please)
Apologies to the moderators if this topic is in the wrong place.

BLACK VIKING reacted to James H in HM Brig-Sloop Flirt 1782 by James H - FINISHED - Vanguard Models - 1:64
    Time for an update.

The hull is now pretty much built, down to the various rigging points on the outside hull. Here is another abridged series of photos which will feature in the instruction manual.

It had been decided very early on that First was to look very different from Speedy. That wasn't just with the white bottom hull and earlier riggings, but also with selective use of period colours. The kit itself is quite different to Speedy, with different materials used in places, necessitating new laser cut files specifically for this release. Instead of leaving the upper bulwarks in pear, I sat the swivel gun post support patterns against the cap rail and marked the area to be painted blue, with a pencil. The adjoining areas were then masked and several thin coats of Humbrol 25 Blue brush painted into that area. The patterns were then glued into position and the areas they lay over the gun and oar ports, snipped away and trimmed back.

The catheads were now assembled and painted before being installed. These were very much a perfect fit, which really pleased me!

The bow timbers and head rails were now fitted. This was probably the most fiddly aspect of the model so far, and what I thought would be a 20 minute session turned out to take about 3hrs before I was happy enough with it. I also fitted the depth markings etc. The dark area you see around these is where I've sealed them in polyurethane varnish to give them extra protection. Those areas will blend in to the last full coat of varnish I apply. Note I also added the vertical swivel gun timbers, but in Humbrol 74 Linen (ochre) to give some contrast against the other elements.

Thought I'd have a small diversion and make the four anchors. The only metal in these is the ring. The stocks are also made up from two parts as per the real thing, and black cartridge paper used for the bands.

All belaying pins and racks are now fitted. These are also pinned as well as being glued with PVA. I prefer this glue for things like this, as CA can fracture if stressed.

As with the belaying pin racks, the channels are also pinned and glued with PVA. The chainplates in this kit are provided as single pieces. You need to open them up to sit the deadeye in them, then close back up. Some touching up with black paint is also required. All chainplates are now fitted and pinned to the wales.

All my previous work in making the deck fittings and furniture can now be put into play. The small steel balls for the cannon shot, are burnished in metal blacking fluid.

And here we are so far! Hope you like it.

Right, before the Flirt release, I wanted to put together a version 2 of the Speedy Master Shipwright edition.

I wanted to produce 10 of these very special kits, unfortunately, because of lack of pear blocks due to lockdown, I only have two full kits available.

For this version, I have used all the best materials I can get, no expense spared:

The 2 and 3mm MDF has been replaced with high quality birch plywood, with the lower deck showing laser etching
All pearwood laser cut sheets are replaced with boxwood, and there is an extra 1mm boxwood sheet containing some parts from the 0.8mm ply and the PE sheets, like lower tops and all mast and yard cleats. There are 17 separate laser cut sheets, which include the ladder and gratings sets.
    Second planking in boxwood
Pearwood laser cut heart blocks in case some want to replace the deadeyes for the lower mast stays

Not cheap, but it is about as good as I can make it.

Hi all dash finished. Reasonably pleased with how it came out. Was a real struggle to paint the thin lines below speed numbers. I didn't use all the decals for this as didn't want the chrome colour on them to clash with the paint.

Thanks for looking. Next step is starting on the car interior!
    Cheers

The gate of the village has advanced quite a bit: the central stone part is almost done.
The outside with the pointed arch. The interior with the half columns on each upright of the double arch.

There is still a sanding, joints to be made, the top to be filled in.
The towers are still being worked on, but will be glued on each side.

Then will come the wood work, with the doors, the hoardings, etc... And finally the roofs.
2 series of photos of the building site, a few days apart. 😅

Yours is really excellent  - you should send it as a gift to Michael Hirst 😂  (I was a The Vikings huge fan for 6 seasons - got me super motivated to build a Viking boat)

FYI: if you were also a fan -- Unfortunately, the show has come to an end with Season 6 being the final instalment. The makers have confirmed this. However, there’s still good news because Hirst just isn’t done yet. Valhalla, a spin-off series has been confirmed which will stream on Netflix and not Amazon or History. As its predecessor show did. Twenty-four episodes have already been greenlit and will be filmed in Ireland.

His book about the series (Vikings) was also very interesting - He and his staff were obsessed with getting as much as possible visually and historically accurate for the series...
