Peter,
I`m very pleased to welcome you to the Chebec. In the moment there is still a good drive at it, an looks like the fixture works well...
Build log part 2
setting up the frames /bulkheads with the keel. Unfortunately the outside contour straking can first be checked when the whole framework later on is removed from the fixture. But there will have to be fairing done anyhow. Perhaps I will add a minimum of stringers as well, in order to ease the planking later.
Nils
Keel is in place (not to be glued in)
glueing the paper bulkheads to the ply. The paper will be scraped off afterwards
8 layer ply was ordered but really came 10 layer, total 5,2 mm thick
up to now all is fitting well (in dry fit)

Thanks Russ.
Getting those ribs lined up & glued in correctly isn't easy. Got them all done- they are not exactly even but they are off so slightly that it doesn't show & the rest of the construction will make it totally unnoticeable. Added breast hooks to each end. Cut out, shaped & glued on the floor planks. Now I've got the risers clamped waiting for the glue to dry.

Making the netting. Taped a section of it down flat. I cut out a guide from a sheet of paper. This took several tries until I got it that fits in the cranes the same size of the netting. Once this was checked, double checked and triple checked I used the paper as a size guide for the netting. I laid it down over the taped down netting and carefully stretched thread along the edges of the paper guide taping the ends of the thread down. (Somehow missed getting a shot of this step)
When I had all 4 thread sides in place I used something called Fray Check I picked up in the sewing section at Walmart. to hold the thread in place. This made a little bit of semi-clear places along the edges but thats ok. After cutting out and tying the netting all around alcohol was used to dissolve the Fray check and remove that stuff out of the netting holes.
This all took me much longer to do than I expected. I touched up some edges with CA glue where the netting looked pulled away form the rope. I realized too late that I probably used one size too large threading for this net siding but I'm gonna let it go like it is and be ok with it.

I'm experimenting making the perfect boarding ladder rungs. So far, no good. I'll have to go shopping for different woods to make them to my satisfaction.

OK, so we all have our screw ups.
I do like Ken’s view about “learning lessons”. And Jon’s reminder that most of our mistakes are between “you and God”.... but I must add “your MSW friends” to that short list.
Oh! One other.... THE DREADED CLOSE-UP CAMERA! (Sees all - Tells all)

My bad on the quoin mistake.... not the only DOWNER for me today.
Just did a re-count on all of my inventory of assembled guns and came up two short on the required cannonades.
Back to the lathe one more time.
Am I alone with these kind of screw-ups?

GUNS - UPDATE....
Thanks again for the visit Piet. I took a short break to post a few quick shots of the progress on the spar deck guns.
For many years, having rigged dozens of deck guns, I found a small detail I have long overlooked with regard to the quoins. How many of us have simply stuck a shaped handle on a wedge and glued it directly onto the carriage beneath the gun?
A closer look at the Connie's guns, I find that the quoin's have a rib on the bottom which rides in a groove which is cut into a separate base fixed to the carriage.... (seen below)
So, I have attempted to emulate that little detail by placing the quoins onto strips of poster board. Unfortunately, the groove is visibly lost with two coats of paint.
Another little note to pass on is a technique I am using to attach the breaching-tackle to the bulwarks....
Rather than fit the belaying peg to the ship and wrestling with getting the seized rope onto the fixed peg, I have glued the pegs into the rope ends.... note the very sharp tips that can be inserted into holes drilled into the bulwarks.
Finally.... a shot of assembled guns in progress. Now working on the tedious rigging of the 3/32" blocks purchased from Syrenshipmodelcompany.com.... thanks Chuck.

JesseLee reacted to woodrat in Venetian Carrack or Cocha by woodrat - FINISHED - 1/64
I am still learning to use it. The thin Silkspan which I used can be delicate and should be carefully cut ( I use a guarded razor blade). When wet it can tear easily. But the thin Silkspan really hangs well. Artists medium or matte varnish is a good adhesive and resists subsequent rewetting. I like the appearance of seams produced by Silkspan strips pasted over pencilled dashed lines. Silkspan is bright white and I find that cold tea produces a nice canvas like appearance. The staining should follow the application of the seams as this produces a slight bulging of the "strips" of sailcloth between the seams (if that makes sense).
My previous deck over the accommodation in the half deck did not allow crew access to the shrouds. Some illustrations seem to show this as completely decked over right out to the sides but this cannot be so if the shrouds are inboard.
I have a cunning plan which will work and is shown in the above picture

Dick I have just spent the last hour or so following the last half of your log. I am really impressed by your persistence in getting the sail to look right, you have done a superb job in my view. Now I understand much better those early paintings and illustrations. I shall go back and start at the beginning now.
Mark Pearse those chaps in a 6 foot skiff are insane! About stability, there is none....just temporary opposing forces providing some equilibrium But a nice illustration of the effects that Dick was working to achieve.
