  1. I'm just absorbing this info for now as I'm too far way from being ready to consider any finishes. But thanks for the discussion as it is enlightening.   2. Welcome to MSW, Stama. When you've decided on a model and get started, open a build log in the appropriate area. It's a great way to meet other modelers and also to get help when needed.
  3. I would think tape is a bad idea for reasons already listed. Making a zero clearance insert out of wood or even plexi is a better idea and really not that hard. But if tape is want you want to use, it's your fingers. Judging from your posts here you seem insistent on the tape.

  5. Welcome to MSW, Ken. I think you'll like model ship work and MSW. There really are no secrets it seems but a lack of knowledge on the part of the those who need to ask questions. One of the keys about a log is that we do share our failures as well as our triumphs. I hope you enjoy the build, as that's most important and it should be relaxing not filled with stress.

  7. Thanks for well wishes. Luckily I have enough pre-cut planking to allow me to start work on the hull. If nothing else it will take my mind off things and give me something to focus on.

  10. Just a quick update.... the wales are on and I'm happy with them. They won't be sanded until I have her fully planked. The hull has been marked out for planking. Things are in a state of limbo due to health issues. The BP med is knocking the wind out of my sails and making me dizzy. Some might say that dizzy is my normal. LOL. But I've been advised to not use any power tools until we get the dosage sorted out. So as soon as possible (hopefully later this week) I can start cutting and shaping planks. I'll do photos after she's planked.
  11. It does look properly dusty, OC. When I was in choppers, it was common for the crew chief and first mech to wipe the bird down with some hydraulic fluid. Gave it a nice clean look but as soon as the rotor head started turning the dust immediately landed and stuck on all surfaces. They had a lot of pride in their machines. Hmm.... now that think about it... there probably should have been a concours d'elegance competition for the cleanest one. Some were that thorough. Even touching up the painted numbers, warnings, etc. inside and outside. A few tried cleaning up the engine exhaust but that was pretty hopeless.
  12. Welcome to the "Old Left-Handed Fool Club", Don. I'm semi-ambidextrous due to being pushed to be right-handed as a kid. But somethings besides writing are better left-handed. Now if I just find a left-handed monkey wrench......
  13. Nice weathering. BTW, the CO will holding a vehicle inspection so the dust may have to go.
  14. Welcome to MSW, Will. Looks like you're off to a great start and a log will help you in moving along. As for the Admiral (wife)... they either love the idea that you'll be out from under foot and out of sight or they resent it. Some do change their minds and bless it when they realize that while you're there, you're not following them around like a lost puppy.

  16. Since the beginning it seems. Actually before the Internet... ARPNET. And just about everything since day one has been grounds for a flame war. LOL. Yeah.. I'm old and jaded.
  17. It would probably end up with you sitting inside the hull to work there at 1/12. That would be a monster to say the least.
  18. I have the 4660 from Little Machine Shop. Lovely machine to use and accurate. It does break down into two pieces by removing 4 bolts. Top speed is 5,000 rpm. From my days many decades ago and being around the big mill (Cincinnati Milacron if I remember right) they didn't turn fast when milling steel or armor aluminum.... but those things weighed at least a ton or more. BTW, for milling steel, you will need to set up a cooling method. Most machines I've seen that do steel have an oil drip or flow system.
