  1. This a most unusual yet fascinating stand for the model. Well done, sir.
  2. Real life takes priority, Egilman. And burnout is an issue in both real life and model building and cross-over is common. Do what has to be done first and then as you feel up to it, fiddle with the model. Eventually, things come back and fall into place. Meantime, we'll all just keep the faith and hope to see you soon.
  3. I also have one (Proxxon branded) and basically it's useful for only little things off the model while chucked into a vise (they make holder for this). Too fast on speed even at it's slowest, and there's no super fine paper that I can find. For inside the hull... there's no substitute for hand sanding and using custom shaped sandpaper holders. If it's really rough, you can use various sanding tools like that with a very light touch and the slowest speed but it will take some practice.
  4. There's another way that's similar to the video, but instead of the two pins on the same plane, they are a 90 degree angle from each other. Wrap as the video shows then brush the whole coil with a mix of white glue and water (50-50) and allow dry. When removed and installed (again... glue/water at the pin) it hangs neatly over the belaying pin. I find this is a lot easier especially where space is limited on smaller scales (1:64 or less).
  5. Here's hoping that the recovery does go well. For a few days she'll be pretty much out of it. After the pain meds wear off and she wants to be more active, keep her from jumping off furniture and running. Been through that myself with lady dogs.
  6. Second planking is looking good, Jack. Walnut is a bear to work with. As far as spiling goes with walnut, in the past I just sanded to shape because of the splintering.
  7. Looking good, Justin. Sometimes, the best lessons are those hard earned even if it means going back a few steps.
  8. I saw this in my news feed this morning.... for those of you interested in all things McLaren...... https://autos.yahoo.com/bizarre-v-6-mclarens-newest-150000873.html
  9. Welcome to MSW, Joseph. It would appear you have a good plan laid out for starting and progressing in the hobby. As for tools... go to the top of the page (the More button) and click on the database. There's articles on getting started, tools, etc. As for tools. I think you're off to a good start. Rule of thumb.... only buy tools when you need them. If you're not sure.. ask. Tools can be a hobby unto themselves... yes, I'm a toolholic and trying to stop. I do note that you don't have tweezers listed.... a good set is very worthwhile. Same for a hobby knife like an Xacto. As for advice... open a build log on each project as it's a great way to get help and advice. Use MSW to search for other logs of the same model and manufacturer as you'll get ideas and insight in to methods, pitfalls, etc. The most important bit of advice perhaps... have fun and enjoy the process. You may have issues and be pulling your hair out but we're here and can help, thus the build log and seeing what others have done. It can be a very relaxing and enjoyable journey.
  10. Glad to hear of your recovery moving along, Chris. As the others say... mask up. Double mask if you have to.
  11. Basic rule is: There will be blood. Early tools were my grandfathers workshop where he carved German style coo-coo clocks. Not I tool, but had one of those early chemistry sets that had all sorts of what are considered "hazardous" chemicals including a few that were radioactive. One of the "experiments" was making gunpowder as I recall.... big bang in the driveway where I had my 'lab'. I'm surprised that I've lived as long as I have.
  12. Before you do anything on planking, go here and read the tutorials. While similar, they do have their differences so pick one that works for you. Generally... the garboard is one of the first ones done and then line off the hull for planking. https://modelshipworld.com/forum/98-planking-downloads-and-tutorials-and-videos/
  13. I've heard as we age, we regress.... After letting that soak in for a minute... I"m afraid. Very afraid.
  14. Just curious, Daniel. I've seen on some ships where belaying pins (at least one per side) were on the outside of the bitts. Does the Vic have these? It might give some more room by putting one on "wings".
  15. That's my fall back position if I fail again. Sometimes I'm just too stubborn for my own good.
  16. Jaager, I've just been using the model as my "jig" along with various scraps that I've shaped. I've trying one more time then I'll use the double plank method to get the thickness right.
  17. Bottles is what the French word for what we call quarter galleries translates as. I've fallen into that rabbit hole myself on French ships.
  18. I agree with Keith. Join the party and open a log. You'll get help and get to know other builders. Your cross section came out well.
  19. Welcome back home, Mike. We'll be looking forward to seeing your build log.
  20. Noel, I never considered the wax method as I've never heard of it. Given the way my mind works, I'm going to stick with what I know at this point. Right now, I'm trying to bend a piece of 1/4" X 1/8" in two directions at once.... A curve for the bow and and down on the length. A jig will be the way to go I think......
  21. You asked about blades.... Here's a link. While it's for the Byrnes, it will also work for the FET and Micromark saw (the last two are basically the same saw.
  22. I've moved this to the "review" area for kits.
