  1. If it's not specific to a given ship, I'd recommend zu Mondfeld's "Historic Ship Models". While it has it's issues, it's pretty comprehensive as far as terminology and general ship knowledge.
  2. Welcome to MSW, Arthur. Lovely boat sitting there, and certainly something to be proud of. When you're ready to start your new ship, do start a build log in the kit as it's a great way to get help and meet people.
  3. Thanks gentlemen. I'm slowly making progress. Once the first line of wales is done I'll post pics. I think I got it right this time, but it did cost me some hair that I pulled out. It's taking more then I expected to bend and shape a piece of wood that roughly 1/4" wide and 1/8th inch thick. But I'm patient. Bruce, I think this is only POB monograph ANCRE did but I know it was one of the first. Always room for one more.
  4. I did buy the wood box set a long time ago. I'm thinking they changed suppliers to lowest bidder and quality went out the window. Looking at the price today... $25.... really? I think I paid a lot more when I bought my set.
  5. I don't think it was "plain" water. Most likely a mixture of glycol and fresh water. The glycol displaces the water and helps to preserve the wood. The same thing was done with the Vasa amongst others.
  6. You might also have a look in our database as there articles on many if not most of the processes we use in model ship building. https://thenrg.org/resource/articles
  7. Goto their website: https://artesanialatina.net/en/ There's a link at the bottom of the page for "parts" along others for contacting them.
  8. I'm a tad late but I brought my egg nog. I think I'll sit down below instead of in the rafters. I don't want to fall out of them as the nog is tad strong this year.
  9. Been doing that and mentally trying to sort things out. I finally picked up a strip of wood and some glue and started laying planks again.
  10. Let's not forget that often the boats were towed to keep the deck clear and also keep the boat's hull wet so the wood wouldn't shrink and create more headaches.
  11. Here's an article in the database that may help get you started. Start simple and go from there as your skills and needs develop. https://thenrg.org/articles/basic-tools As for the Constitution... there's a lot of kits out there with only two really being accurate. Bluejacket does one that is very accurate. Model Shipways is also accurate. However they do represent different period in her history.
  12. Nice light. I hope it works for you. We can't have too much light... or tools.. or toys.
  13. Looks like a rather old church, Kevin. Well done, sir.
  14. Look like the real deal from here, Javlin.
  15. Hi Ben, Welcome to MSW. I'd suggest you open a build log in the Kit Builds area to get help, advise, and meet people here. Maybe start with a brief bit of background on the building the model to bring everyone up to date on where you are.
  16. Welcome to MSW, Charlie.
  17. The MicroMark is actually the Sieg, unless MM changed suppliers recently.
  18. I'm in and hanging out in the rafters for the aerial view.
  19. Sorry to hear that, OC. What Edward said goes for me too.
  20. Love the tower rework, Kevin. As for the orientation question.... do what you want unless there's some compelling reason to do otherwise.
  21. I have both a mill and lathe. The mill gets used a lot more than the lathe. If I were starting over, the lathe probably wouldn't be on my list. As for chisels, buy what you need when you need it. I have several sets of the old Dockyard chisels.. while nice, I've not used them that much.
  22. The simple answer is measure the boat and divide into thirds. Two lines of rope such that they are a third of the way from each end. Put 4 eyebolts into the coaming at the points mentioned and secure the lines by seizing them.
  23. Hi Dan, welcome to MSW from the south end of Oregon.
