If you can, upload a photo or copy of the drawing. It'll help us sort this out. And yes, at times, MSW can be pretty overwhelming.

A quick Google shows only wood kits, not plastic. Also, please change your screen name to a "handle" otherwise you'll get bombarded with spam as this site (like all others) gets crawled by lots of bots and one never knows where that information will end up.

I worked with guy who was a welder who only needed to look a plan once for a particular job. The third time someone asked him about which plans was he using and he responded "I don't need no plans" got him fired. It was an Army project and the army inspector had him fired on the spot for not having the plans. Funny thing was... what he was welding was perfect. So yes, read the plans, put them on your workbench in case someone asks.

Now I'm confused.... one asks a question and the other says "Yes, I got the answer.". I think I need more grog. BTW, do start a build log in the kit area. It's the best way to get help.

Welcome aboard, Jerry. I'd suggest you do your introduction here: https://modelshipworld.com/forum/3-new-member-introductions/ but instead of this topic, create a topic of your own. It will get you more "eyes" on your intro than this corner. Lots of folks around to help so do a build log when you're ready.

2021 CALENDARS ARE GOING FAST!!
mtaylor replied to ferretmary1's topic in NAUTICAL RESEARCH GUILD - News & Information
Eric, your post needs a thousand "likes'. -
Part of the instruction problem is with the older kits. Many of the new ones like Syren, CAF, Vanguard just to name a few, have very good instructions. Many of the older kits from companies like AL will never be upgraded or improved.

AzLandLover, I daresay that all of us have been where you are. A log may seem embarrassing but it's really not. It's a learning tool, not just for you but others doing the same model. So, my advice is jump in.

Welcome to MSW, Pipe Major. Louie da Fly gave the best advice. I hope you'll take him up on it.

Done. No arms were twisted here. Just somewhere between left field and 1st base. -

My bad. I've been buried in other things. I guess I need to get one ordered. -
Is it possible that all these terms are for the same ship? And also, the style of the art. It wasn't it until much later after this period that true dimensional artwork came about. Before that, very stylized as some of the pictures show a minimal amount the hull in the water. I'm not an expert but it does seem that the artworks progressed in detail and the way the ships appear. The alternative is that they actually did look and float like that and were very tiny given the size of the passengers. I am enjoying this conversation (as well as on the other builds of this era) and am learning a lot.

Not sure where to point you too since there's so many kits with different or slightly different rigging plans. Use the search feature and search for Cutty Sark. You should find lots of logs.

If you can only find the primer/paint in spray cans but want to brush it on, there is a method called "decanting" or "decant". I'm not sure how to do this but many of plastic experts do it all the time. Maybe Googling will give you some idea on how to do it.

Welcome to MSW, Tom.

Hi Seaforth, Welcome to MSW. As far as your current model, there's quite a few builds of the ship in the kit area and and index here to assist: https://modelshipworld.com/forum/150-index-of-all-kits-by-brand-and-subject-coming-soon/ Also, do give some consideration to starting a build log. Here's how to start a log:

Welcome back "home".

Hi Gazzarian, Welcome to MSW. For a first effort, it looks pretty good from here. All of us have probably gone through this and with results we were less than pleased with. I'd like to offer a suggestion, instead of HMS Victory, pick something a bit smaller with maybe two masts this time. The learning curve for Vic will probably have you pulling your hair out so something a bit easier. I'd suggest giving some thought to the Syren. There's lots of build logs to help you get through it. Also, do start a build log. It's really the best way to get help, advice, and meet people. Also, open a new topic to introduce yourself. Good luck and have fun as the fun part is the best part.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
