Nice touch with the carpenter's walk, Jim. They do seem to be a rare item in a model possibly because whoever did the plans for the model didn't bother. Or maybe they just were't on every ship. They did give the carpenter's the ability to check for leaks and also inspect during battle for holes. But the penalty was loss of usable hold space.

1930 BENTLEY 4.5 LITRE by MadDogMcQ - AIRFIX 1:12th Scale
mtaylor replied to MadDogMcQ's topic in Non-ship/categorised builds
No skills? Looks good from here. -
I'll follow along also, Vaporetto. If you decide to the Bentley, you can do a log of it here: https://modelshipworld.com/forum/73-non-shipcategorised-builds/

Jay, I hope you open a build log for this and maybe show a few photos the train layout and where the ship will "float".

Keith, Interesting info on converting the smooth bore to rifled bore on the Dahlgren guns. Another tidbit to note. The ship's cat looks like she has that "I'm curious. What are you doing?" look. I believe she'll soon be on the bench with you.... helping.

Beautiful work, George. Every time I see something different in models (like yours) is well worth the time spent since I learn something.

Thanks for the comments. I appreciate it. I have cut some planks and still sorting out the top of the main wale. Unlike other ships, the French practice (on frigates at least) from the upper "wale" the planks taper down in thickness. I'm figuring out things including wood cutting at the current time.

Welcome to MSW. Here's a link to planking tutorials which should help you wrap your head around it. Planking is hard, just requires patience and a bit of knowledge and the tutorials help. https://modelshipworld.com/forum/98-planking-downloads-and-tutorials-and-videos/

Converting a Backyard Shed into a Model Workshop
mtaylor replied to Hank's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Looks fantastic, Hank. All you'll need is the A/C now. -
Not sure where you are but you contact some printshops in your area and they should be able to print them out if no one else has them.

Welcome to MSW. A couple of points... read the articles on tools here: https://thenrg.org/resource/articles and best advice is to buy them as you need them. The other suggestion is to start small on a model without masts and work up from there. Above all... have fun.

Welcome to MSW, Aaron. If' you can download the image to your computer, you can then upload here but do give credit for it. Otherwise, at the top of the posting box, you'll see what looks like 2 links of a chain. Hit it, paste in the URL and it should post what's on that url.

I think we'll be looking forward to seeing your work. And we don't laugh at other's projects. We may laugh at their jokes, but not the projects.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
