  1. From here, it looks like the router could also be used similar to a laser cutter which would be a doubleplus good thing.
  2. I wonder if it's possible that the ship's carpenter mixed up some paint while at sea well before the battle? Or maybe it was painted and then "did the paint fade" before it was painted again? The problem with this type is situation (72 layers?) is figuring out which is the right one. From where I sit, paint it the way you feel is right. Seriously... no one can really argue as we really don't know.
  3. Dave. I only have the mill, no drill press. It works for when I to drill but so far, it hasn't been that often.
  4. It was common for almost all the countries in the war to try to salvage or capture enemy planes, tanks, etc. in WWII. Part of the "know your enemy" thinking of all sides.
  5. It would appear that they have changed their name/merged/ or ??? but are now MicroModels. http://worldofmicromodels.nl/micromodels-history/
  6. You can use a mill for drilling but you shouldn't use a drill for milling. The bearings on the drill are made for that.
  7. It's very generic. It is a decorator item that looks like ship in reality. Back at least 50 years ago or more, they turned these things out by thousands (or so it seems). I'd say, have fun and do it up as you like.
  8. Uh... Glowforge? Not sure I can recommend them. They've had too many issues. They're more of a small craft hobby machine. That may have changed. There were issues over smoke removal as it was labeled as being able to be used one's kitchen... They also had the time, they the only way to "print/cut" was via an internet connection and not directly using a cable. There was a file size limit and a "cut" time limit due to heat build up. So they may be ok by now that they've gone into production. I'll assume you've read all the amazon reviews, and other customer reviews? That router looks interesting.
  9. Ah... Madrone not Madrona. The problem is it's tough to find straight pieces and it requires a very slow, controlled drying process. If you can find some good Madrone, go for it. I had two small pieces I got from a friends tree and it's very nice.
  10. Richard, That rail from the side looks the same as other frigates. And then there's the regulations pointed out by Cotrecerf and the date of 1780 vs. the date of Le Hermione of 1779. I also looked that plans for Le Venus.... guess what... no hammock rails or even the walkway rails are shown.. nada. I don't the the latest set of Le Venus so don't read too much into it. The volume I have was the first and is a bit skimpy on plans. So it's possible the cranes were added given the time of launch which would indicate that hammocks were being used after 1780. Go with what you feel on this . And don't feel alone, my head hurts too.
  11. Welcome to MSW. Feel free to start a build log as it's a great way to get help and make friends.
  12. Happy New Year, Gary. That's a great looking shop. The choice on the CNC or 3D printer (I don't they're laser) should be based on how much you'll use it. The CNC can turn parts out of wood, metal, and in some cases plastic. The 3D printer is pretty much plastic at this point for the consumer market.
  13. Fantastic work, Michael. Seems every time I follow one of your logs (even the train one) I get ideas. I admit though, I'm not skilled enough to follow up on most of them.
  14. If your wife/partner/mate/kids/etc. seem to be "borrowing" hand tools, get them their own small set. I put one together for my former wife with a couple of pliers, screwdrivers. wire cutters, etc. She was happy with it. I need to add to this... just make sure that once she has her toolbox... never, ever, under any circumstances, "borrow" a tool from it.
  15. Looking at the photos, It probably should take very long either.
  16. I go along with Druxey. I'm building everything to 1:64 as I just don't have room for even one at 1:48. It is a compromise especially with tiny details.
  17. As for the lack of hammocks, Richard, it seems the crew slept where ever they could. Down in the hold on the cable tier was considered be "good". One has to remember that not all the crew would be asleep at the same time, so as long as they weren't in the way, all was fine. That was my thinking also about the cranes. Just looks weird. Yet the side view looks like most of the other frigates of the period that have only a single rail on the outboard side. If it were me, I'd go with the single rail.
  18. I think you're right on the off-white. I was thinking an unshiney steel....
