John , The thought of turning you green is a compliment indeed , and i thank you for it ,but having seen some of your work i,m the Hulk ? Glakie, thanks for the support , it,s much appreciated .I had thought that not painting would mean a simpler build but am realising there is no hiding anything under paint and once i put the first coat of varnish on the color scheme changes drastically ,and not always for the best , but i,m learning!!! On a different topic i have talked myself into buying a proxxon MF70 mill, don,t know exactly what i will use it for but research shows it,s a usefull machine and i need something for finner work other than files and blades ,thats my excuse anyway !! I think you mentioned that you had one John and i was wondering if either of you have any pro,s or con,s ,i did ask the question on the forum about which add ons i should order with it , the percission vice and keyless chuck seem to be essential ,any advice welcome ?

few pics of resent progress on caprails etc one in the middle a bit wonky, will have to get the hammer out Curves caused a few problems ,after a few bending failures i carved them from box section Probably should not have varnished so soon as there are still some posts to go on the rails ,but these will be pinned anyway and i wanted to see the finished color before i went any further, never sure of what i will finish up with . Happy .

what add ons for a Proxxon mill
shihawk replied to shihawk's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Tks, Boccherini , that should cover the basics . Did i read somewhere that the collets hold better / more stable than the chuck ,so it should only be used for smaller bits i assume ?? Brian ,tks for the suggestion but i think i will consider adding the engraving unit later when i get a a bit more experience . Another question , it does not mention which, if any bits are supplied with the unit ,any suggestions as to which i should order to begin with for general use ,again i have no idea exactly what i will be using it for so don,t want to buy specialised pieces as yet . I read that some people can make their own for paticuliar projects , is that an option ?? -
My quest for a new toy continues , after my recent query on the Jim saw i have been considering what might be most usefull at my present stage of build . I have come up with a Proxxon MF 70 mill , .My mind is made up(for a change) and the present low euro -pound means i can buy it for less than £200 + postage My question now to anyone who has this is what accessiares i should order along with it . Don,t ask me exactly what i will be doing with it cause i don,t know yet but i have spent a lot of time reading reviews etc from other members and it seems to be a very usefull piece of kit . I started out looking for something to drill holes accurately ,and finished up thinking why not spend a few pounds more and have a multi task piece of kit .I would just like to know which extras are the most usefull for general use , i have already added the percision steel vice but am unsure of what else i need . Thanks for all suggestions . Boyd

Kenw i have the moto saw and for the price it is ok for a beginner like myself ,i doubt if it,s suitable for cutting strips ,but i have found it usefull for simple curves etc

Can i live without a BYRNES TABLE SAW
shihawk replied to shihawk's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Glakie , your right i should not call it luck , you had the b---s to go ahead and buy it ,where as i,m fuffing about wondering if i will use or need it . Of -course i,ll use it and needing it probably does,nt really come in to it . I won,t use it every day or even every week but then what tool can boast that, and when i need to cut something accurate i,ll have it there . I probably should not have called you a sod either but over here it,s just a saying ,i hope you took it the way it was meant And i still think it looks great even i never use it ?? Boyd -

Lucky sod !!!!!,,Enjoy -
Many pictures of professional builds show the cannons with out the train tackle ,sometimes less is more . I get your point about looking cluttered and often wonder what real ships looked like with ropes and tackle all over the place ,but then maybe that,s how it was ?. As someone pointed out to me there is so much to look at smaller detail may not even be noticed except by the builder of-course .There are no hard and fast rules ,i tend to go with what i think looks right , your build ,your decision . Remember ,how many experienced builders will be looking at it , bar yourself that is ????

Lookin great , Its just a pity as i discovered that a lot of the cannon rigging detail will be barely visible once the deck goes on ,but its a great way to learn what you want for the uncovered top deck , i have been thinking of doing my top deck with the cannons pulled in , just for a change ,but haven,t tried it yet ?

Hi all , progress has been painfully slow ,to much else going on . I think that Christmas every 5 years would be often enough . I found it difficult to get more than a couple of hours at any one time on the build and with some of the finer work it takes that long to pick up where i left off ,if that makes sense ? Have managed to finish planking the quarter deck and cut a few corners on the widows etc below it , everything is there but just didn,t be to particular as it won,t be seen . All the fittings have been scratch built using the ply parts as a guide ,it,s a good way to learn scratching and although some parts aren,t perfect i,m happy with the most of them ,learning all the time . The brass rails etc around the staircase were a suprise after the lack of brass for the stern decor and i,m not sure that they don,t look a bit out of place but i think i can live with them . Not that much new in the pics but at least every thing is covered up now and once the cap rails are finished no more ply will be visible

congrats , a superb build , i have been watching from afar and admiring your skills ,something to aim for ,look forward to your next build . Boyd.

You had more success with the blacking than i did ,i think it,s down to the proper cleaning ? Sails look great , it will be good to see them fitted .

My thoughts on the rope coil is that the back tackle is already fully extended so why would there be a long coil of rope unused , i know i cut mine off but think i need to revisit and tidy up .Im on 1:72 scale and still opted for 2mm blocks on the tackle ,not sure if authenticly accurate but again i thought they looked better ,which has always been my rule of thumb !! I know on pics of the real ship the blocks do look big ? I think your cannons look great and remember even the one,s that will be seen on this deck will not be in full view like those on the upper deck .

I am no expert but have experience of a couple of billings kits and basically you have to build from the plans. I don,t know the age of the kit but in my experience the written instructions are very minimal . Perhaps someone on the site who has built this kit previously could give you some help ??Search the tutorials on site for help with the basics . It,s a great way to learn .

Can i live without a BYRNES TABLE SAW
shihawk replied to shihawk's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Richard , i know what you mean about spending time learning to use the tools ,i bought a proxxon lathe some time ago and still havn,t quite got the hang of it , problem is i don,t need it that often at this stage in my build ,and i suppose this is the problem with all tools ,there will be periods when you think, Why did i buy that ??,and then at another stage you wonder how you would manage without it . No single tool can be used for everything ,so it comes down to do i do it with a file or buy a lathe ??As many have said most fancy tools can be done without but life and this wonderfull hobby can be so much easier with them !! -
I went through a similiar quandry a few weeks ago , part of the problem is that if the ropes are not kept taught they tend to have a mind of their own and do not lay natural looking You can i suppose glue them into a natural shape but it,s not easy .I therefore chose to tie the ropes up tight . i agree if the cannon is pushed out the side tackle should be loose but how do you get it to sit natural looking in that state ?? Although my Victory is the 1:72 the same principal applies so feel free to take a look on my log to see how it look,s It may at least give you some ideas of how not to do it !!! .I,m sorry i can,t give you a link but my computer skills are limited but it,s Billings Victory ,wood finish . i will be interested to see what you come up with Boyd

Can i live without a BYRNES TABLE SAW
shihawk replied to shihawk's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Am i correct in assuming now that to cover all needs ,if i were to start scratch building ,a table saw plus a scroll or band saw would be necessary and maybe a thickness sander if possible ????? -
Main deck planking complete and am fairly happy with the color ,however i won,t know for sure untill the first coat of varnish and by that time it will be to late to change so i think i will have to be satisfied whatever the result .So long as the shading differences are minimal deck furnature etc will break it up. As i mentioned in an earlier post i thought i could have problems because i didn,t fit the false deck early enough ,and although i had to trim a fair bit to make it fit at least it finished up within 1mm of being even at the sides . I used a wide margin plank to make it easier and this ment i was able to try out "joggling", if thats the right word . Although it was only a couple of planks at the bow i think it looks better than running out the planks .By the time i fit the cap rail and maybe a "water board or plank " i,m not sure of the correct name ,the extra width of the margin plank hopefully will be hidden . Is matt poly still considered the best for decks or is there something even less glossy , i don,t want any crew breaking a leg , i,m already 3 down after the last accident ????

Can i live without a BYRNES TABLE SAW
shihawk replied to shihawk's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Now you guys really have me confused , Can i do the same on a good band saw as i can on a table saw plus a bit more ????? Is a table saw the best for ripping fine strips or can this also be done easily on a band saw ,fine meaning 0.5mm ???
