uss frolick reacted to Boatsinc2000 in Euryalus Framing Package 1:48
At one time I produced this framing package based upon Allan and Wayne's book.  Since I've retired from the milling business I thought that it might be helpful to post the contents of that wood package for anyone who might be interested in the build or milling this package.  The package was created by taking each frame apart into individual futtocks and laying them out on the corresponding frame thickness sheet.  Hopefully I left enough room between futtocks for the average scroll saw user; however, I did allow for extra material.
The attached pdf file was the package insert from the framing package.  Happy milling!

Wasn't sure where to post this, so please move if better located under another topic.  If there is an interest in any of my other wood packages, just let me know and I'll be more than happy to post their contents as well.

Here's an interesting article with pictures about the restoration of the Indefatigable's bust figurehead at the Liverpool Museum. It's a later Indy, a boys maritime training schoolship circa 1848, from our historical one above, but it shows, perhaps, what decor might have been used to describe "one who never tires" ... In this case, King William IV, or "King Billy".

I just received my copy of the epic, coffee-table catalog book, "Glasgow Museum: The Ship Models", and there are several color photographs of a French prisoner of war bone-model of the Frigate "La Guerriere". It was reportedly made by the crew members whilst in a British prison.

It seems correct, with enough main deck gun-ports for thirty long eighteen pounders - a unique feature of Gurrierre - a full figurehead, a five windowed stern with detailed, period-appropriate carvings and the name under her windows.

If they removed them, then why bother  to carefully draw them on the draught? I believe that they were left in place until the next major refit. They loved to taunt the enemy as well. So many “as fitted” plans show that the sometimes heavy French carvings have been retained, like the Frigate L’ Immortalite.

When the RN refitted the damaged American Frigate Chesapeake in 1814, the were so proud of their capture that they actually replaced the Undamaged billet head with a full length figurehead of a woman representing America, wearing a Stars and Stripes cape!

Many times, as I understand it, the Brits left as much of the French carvings, etc. as possible.  The reason was stealth as a French looking ship could get in closer to the French ports for reconnaissance purposes.  Also cost would be an issue.

I didn't mention in my last post some details about the Indefatigable development.

Scale is 1:64th, making the hull only a little under 890mm in length (still around 50mm longer than my Amati Vanguard in 72nd).

I am basing the model on how she likely appeared in 1796/97, when she captured the French 44-gun frigate Virginie in April 1796 and her most famous action in January 1797, helping drive the 74  Gun Droits de l'Homme ashore. My research tells me that at this time, her armament  was 26x 24 pounders, (I assume Armstrong pattern so this is what I have done for the kit), 18 x 42 Pounder carronades and 2 x 12 Pounder (long) chase guns (which I have done in the Blomefield pattern). So that makes 46 guns in total.

It is twice mentioned in contemporary correspondence that she had 14 carronades on the quarterdeck. The original plans show space for only 6 per side, so I have amended the quarterdeck bulwarks to take the extra port into account. I will probably fit her with a flying jibboom, as this was introduced in 1794, so the finished model will be quite a size.

The pictures shown above are only the very first test fits with all critical structural parts. The hull structure needs to be pretty solid due to its size, so more attention has been spent ensuring this.

Need to work out a suitable figurehead. Stern will be quite basic, but am not sure if the figurehead would have been just a bust or full, as these razees were commissioned at the height of the austerity measures...

    Little update...

I now have another 5 boats available:

    Cutters:
    20 foot
    22 foot
    24 foot
    25 foot

And a 36 Foot Admirals Barge

Ship’s Boats (various types) – VANGUARD MODELS

    Thanks to James Hatch!

Also, I started Indefatigable designs a few weeks ago, and am currently nailing the hull designs. Throughout all this, I have had terrible toothache, culminating in tooth removal yesterday, so still feel like a bear with a sore head...

The pics show the very first assembly of the first parts I cut for Indy, and other pics show the second cut of modified parts. Hull design is now set in stone, so onto deck and bulwark stuff.

I decided to include full deck beams to scale, also scale distance for the upper and poop decks. I am still working on these.

The only parts that are glued on the assembly are the gunport parts.

    This is quite large...

Kevin: I took jewelry lessons some years ago and it was the best thing I could have done to learn to work metal properly. I learned how to cast, silver solder, form metal and many other tricks. Bonus: my wife got a cast white gold ring and silver repoussé necklace out of it. You can't lose!

uss frolick reacted to Blue Ensign in Builds without full masts
I build restricted rig or unrigged models these days for space reasons, but I do like the look of hull only Navy Board style models.
I also like the look of models rigged with lower masts and standing rigging only, but without yards.

That said I do have several fully rigged models so my appetite for those is sated.
If you are looking for examples, here's a couple I have built in that manner.

This Heller Victory built a good few years ago is an example  of lower standing rigging only, it represents a significant saving of space.

This build of the  Syren cutter Cheerful at 1:48 scale was restricted purely for space saving reasons, but I like the look.

I wasn't quite done with cutters and I did want to rig one.
I chose the Vanguard models 1:64 scale build of Alert.

That very long  Bowsprit coupled with the yards made for a large case, that I hadn't quite appreciated would be required.

Hope this helps to inform your decisions.

    Regards,

    B.E.
