A few pictures of the engine. It is almost finished and I have waived the oily look.... I was ready to use real dirty oil (from my car) but decided otherwise:

I still have to paint the exhaust and assemble it.

Added some rope details. Also made up the tackle and installed the Fore gaff. Slow going. But result was pretty good. Trying to take my time.

    Moving on!

The Admiral approves too, describing the work as "elfy."  Elfy, as in the Keebler Elf.  She was drawn to the details, below.

I'm back to puzzling out how to download pictures from the cloud. (Don't mean to publish them so large.) I'll figure it out eventually.  I really enjoyed building this, and I'm quite pleased with the results. There are many ways it can be improved, but that takes time and practice.  I can't wait to start another

Having problems removing an extra picture.  If I'm successful, then good for me. If not, then thank you for your patience.

I haven‘t found the time yet to finish the gun tackles due to some nice spring weather to go out with family. But finished some mast hoops to replace the cast ones.

Hello all, what a wonderful site. As a bit of introduction I just completed the Model Shipways New Bedford Whaleboat. I started building this while undergoing 6 months of chemotherapy that caused the loss of feeling in my hands. I thought it would be good therapy and it did seem to help. I worked on it when I felt able and found it relaxing and fun as I was essentially on home confinement for many months. Due to my neuropathy and inability to feel the small parts I made extensive use of hemostats, forceps and tweezers. I am included a few photos and any comments, suggestions or criticisms would be welcomed! John

Small advance of this week-end. The elm tree pumps are done.

The metal reinforcement band is simulated using some black card stock strips.

Now it's really time to work on the catheads...

    Hi MSW!

This is my first model ship build. I chose the Yankee Hero from Blue Jacket because it was designed with inexperienced people like me in mind.

    Hi all,

Here's my next Card project, once again "off-topic" in a Model Ship Forum . It's a WWII Mk. IV Spitfire, or should I say TWO Spitfires. Halinski supply two aircraft in this kit - a green/grey version and and all-grey one. I didn't realise that until I was doing my Parts Spreadsheet and found a couple of identical pages which got me wondering . At this stage I'm only going to do the green/grey Post D-Day version, but I may change my mind later.

Here's a pic of the Cover Art :

Here's a pic of the first thing built, the Dashboard. There are 2 versions in the kit - a simplified one-piece dash and a 3-piece one that needs the holes for the gauges punched out and a thin sheet of cellophane (from a cigarette packet) inserted between them to simulate glass. No prizes for guessing which way I chose :

Here is the top almost completed. I made the back frame a little wider than the other frames so I had room to add the LED strip. It has an adhesive backing that stuck to the top very well. I created a groove in the back of the case for the wire to fit into, so when I add the top it will go over the wire. There is a control box that dims the lights and turns them on and off, which will hang down in the back of the case along one side. Adding the top to the sides is the next step.

As I was working on the false timberheads, I came to the first one I glued in, at the step of the foredeck.  I wasn't paying attention to setting them plumb at the start, and simply glued it to the edge of the foredeck, which was perpendicular to the deck, not the waterline.

The adjacent timberheads are set in place (not yet glued) plumb.  Gotta fix this!

All the timberheads now glued in place, including the replacement for the out-of-plumb piece.  This also shows the beam that makes up the foredeck step, which I'll install after it's painted.

The foredeck beam in its eventual position.  Next: trim and sand the false timberheads, and start cutting scuppers.

I believe the topic was book recommendations? ....... the Neophyte  Shipmodelers Jackstay by GF Campbell is my recommendation. This slim volume is a good place to start if you want to invent the wheel for yourself and begin learning ship model building from the very beginning. The reason it’s perfect for the beginner is that it has some of the best clear uncomplicated illustrations you will ever see. Plus it doesn’t go down the rabbit hole in any one issue, it stays simple and covers the basics in a straightforward and efficient style. It covers all the necessary topics yet remains uncomplicated. Finally it’s inexpensive and easily obtainable in the secondhand market.

Added a ramrod to every cannon. It is made of a piece of 1/16‘‘ square stripes drawn through a 1,6mm hole drilled in a piece of stainless steel. Then tighten in a dremel and brough to shape with a needle file.

    Evening,
    Hope everyone is well.
Very little work on Niagara recently. Been sick as a witch the past few days.
I've lived of mugs of hot tea for the past 5 days.
Really came on last Thursday, went to work on Friday......was promptly sent home!! Think I was on the clock for less than an hour.
Have not been that sick in 10+ years. More a fever than a flu.
Since I work in medicine, with patient contact, it's required that I get a flu shot. If it was a flu it would have been worse and longer.

    Any whoo…..

Feeling better, and thought I would update. All of below was done 2 weekends ago.
Hope to be back building soon.....the "building itch" has returned and I feel so behind!

I stropped and mounted the Bullseyes on the Bowsprit for the shrouds.
I was wrapping the Bullseyes, when it dawned on me I don't need the clothes pin.

I do have a "3rd hand"!  Forgot all about it.
    It really does help.

The Bullseyes were wrapped separately then "tied" together strategically so it cant be seen well.
This maintained the Bullseyes in there final locations well.
A little CA glue really helped too!

All black rope is .025 from Syren.  I'll use the same size rope for the actual Bowsprit shrouds.
The Lanyards will be .018 tan rope.
As some may have noticed, Syren no longer makes black rope.
Before they sold out I was able to get an order in that should finish the Niagara with plenty of extra for screw ups.

The Bullseyes were bought from Model Expo.
The instructions have you drill out 1/8th Deadeyes to make Bullseyes.
That was a comedy! I must have ruined 20 trying a dozen different ways to do it.
They just flaked apart, might have been dried out the way they crumbled.
Coating in CA glue before drilling didn't help.
They should just include the Bullseyes with the kit.

Finally, I made and glued in the channels - 2 per side with the holes for the eventual rigging in place.  For added strength, I added a metal rod to each channel, drilled  hole in the hull where they mount.  I also sanded off all the paint to ensure a good, strong bond.

Work does continue, as I believe the main deck elements are done.  I know, it may not look like it, as pretty much all the stuff is not yet glued or placed on deck, but it's off on a shelf in my room so I don't damage it with further work.  The deck has all the holes and cutouts, etc, needed to securely mount them all when needed.
