Beef Wellington reacted to Peta_V in AVOS by Peta_V - FINISHED - Master Korabel - scale 1/72 (exclusive kit) - Russian tender
Back in the workshop with some small progress.
I have added another pair of the secure rings @DPK's advice. Thanks again. I have finish few final touches on the windlass and secured it on the deck.

I have experimented with the belaying pins. Luckily There are few spare so I could blacken one to se how it looks on the ship. Still not sure what I will use, if clean brass or black (leaning little bit more for black version). Here is the comparison. What do you think??

Ian, from my experience, getting sufficient tension in rope at this scale is pretty tough as it will put a lot (likely too much) strain on the mounting points - at small scales the relative force of the thread is much more than at full scale .  I suggest the following, before attaching the crowsfeet, soak them in dilute PVA while under tension, that way when dry they will retain their taught profile without actually requiring much in the way of tension from the fore stay preventer.  You should then be able re-attach avoiding the bow that you see .  You could also use the dilute PVA on the standing rigging to introduce a more lifelike 'sag' but that's down to personal taste.

This thread isn't dead yet... despite going since 2013 without a finished Bissy to show for it.  😅

I've noticed I tend to do the most work on my ships from September to January so maybe I'll make some good progress in the next few months... then again, who knows? I'm not gonna try to force it, just take my time and let the build take it's course. This is a hobby after all!

Anyway, some new progress to report; I assembled the aircraft catapults and did a bunch of small touch-up work.

I'm generally leaning towards abandoning the instruction order (which would have me working on the forward/aft decks) and working on the lower levels of the superstructure and upwards from there. Anyway, I'll post more progress when I have more to show!

I really have no excuse for buying, let alone starting this kit as I have plenty going on I my current builds.  However, everytime I wandered over to the Syren Ship Model website to buy sundery items, this kit stared back longingly at me, and sadly up to now was 'out of stock'.  Fortuitously on the last visit, there was one in stock and I just couldn't resist, after all, it couldn't hurt could it?  Well, the package has arrived and despite my best efforts to leave the box closed (about 5 minutes), the genie is out of the bottle.

This will most definitely be a side project, and it will finally be nice to be able to follow some very good instructions and build a very nice looking model out of the box.  Hopefully this will be a nice diversion to 'Jason' which seems to be anything but.

I hope that I'm up to this challenge, I can certainly appreciate the reasons why this is classified as a more advanced kit.  Progress will be slow.  I'm not planning on this being the most extensive build log, but will likely post progress pictures and ask questions as I go...

I finally got things organized enough to stain the port sides and cills.

This stain at the edges and top will be overlapped by planking, so it was not essential to keep a neat edge. But I thought that I might be staring at this for some time to come, since I am so slow in construction, and so I decided it would help my morale if it looked neat at this point.

I therefore masked the edges with Tamiyo tape, leaving a little beyond the 3" that will be revealed by the planks. I also blocked out with paper, just in case I got messy.

And then I used my normal red stain, wiping on with a cloth. Messing around with this dislodged my thread planking lines, making this look all ahoo. I need to clean this up before FINALLY beginning planking...

My time in New Jersey is growing short and there is much to be done on the longboat. I've now added and painted the cockpit seats and transom knees, and made up,notched and added the thwarts, including the hardware on the thwart supporting the mast, and the thwart knees.

Now it's time to face up to doing the windlass.

Now in New Jersey and back to work on the longboat. I've done the floorboards, the platforms and the risers. All pretty straightforward.

Next, on to the thwarts and the cockpit seats.

I've now faired the interior, added the bow bolsters, cap rail, friezes and moldings. With the completion of this work, I will be putting this away until we go to New Jersey for the month of August and part of September, where  work will resume while there. In the meanwhile, I will be starting on Lexington, for which I will start a build log shortly.

It's been almost 4 months since I last posted. For the first time in over 50 years of modeling, I suffered total "burnout".  I just didn't even want to look at this model (or any other). Within the last week, I finally decided to give it another go, and proceeded to finish up the hull planking, where I had left off months ago. While I'm not particularly happy with the result, it does feel good to be back at it.  I've removed the baseboard and am now in the process of removing the frame centers.

Hopefully, I am past any thought of abandoning this project (to be clear, the issues were entirely mine, and in no way a reflection on the fine quality of this kit), and back on track.

I have chosen the Medway longboat as one of two projects that I am going to start now. The other is the brigantine Lexington, a semi-scratch build based on plans by Clayton Feldman and a mini-kit from The Lumberyard. It is my current intention to begin the longboat now, but suspend work when I get the Lexington project started (Chuck's delivery time is considerably shorter than The Lumberyard).
I will then take the longboat to New Jersey, where we will be spending a portion of the summer, and possibly early fall, and hopefully complete it there.

So far, I have completed the keel assembly and transom, and am starting on the frames. I'm embarrassed to have to admit that I butchered one of the overlap joints on the keel and have to use the simplified joint version. Not a good start.

The material of the guns is still in discussion. Did the Vici n 1782 still have brass guns - as Bugler and McKay see as a possibility - or did she have already iron ones. As discussed before, I will keep you updated.

So that was no. 2 out of four being ready now. Approx. 1780 and 1920 are done, 1805 and 2018 still to follow.

    Laying the deck.
Before fitting the false deck I had marked the deck beams and planking layout in pencil. It is far easier to do this before the deck is glued into place.
Because I like the option to leave covers off I install carlings below the deck to give the impression of depth if the gratings are left off.

The waterway has already been installed so the decking can begin.

I am using Boxwood, not the provided stuff, but 0.7mm thick strips which I can get in varying widths.
I will be using nominally 4.5mm wide planks which equate to 11.3"

    1821
    The first two strips either side of the centre line are run full length down the deck, marking the cut out positions for the hatches etc;
The planking then continues using the butt joint plan.

    1856(2)
I don't sand decks , I prefer to scrape them. For this I use an old  plane blade.

    1852(2)

    1851(2)
Once I am happy with the deck smoothness I will seal with a water based varnish, using Caldercraft Flat Matt Varnish.

I now turn my attention to the lower hull planking.
