    And thus, we are starting the delicate (for me) double planking task. I am doing one quadrant at a time and started by the easier (relatively speaking) bow.

    Planking of the hull is now over. Phew !!! That was a major task !
     

     
    An enormous amount of sanding needs to take place but that will be for later.
     
    Let's take a look at the instructions from CAF Model: 
     

     
    The above steps have all be completed, although in a different order:
    - Step 5
    - Step 6 verification.
    - Step 4 (minus part 24 which will be glued much later on).
    - Step 9 (wales)
    - Step 3 (planking of the hull)
     
     Hull has been planked and coated internally, with epoxy resin. The stern has been built (it was actually built before the planking) and the Part #25 has been glued. On the other hand, I am not placing part #24 yet, as it includes eight windows and would be automatically broken at this stage (not sure why the instructions only shows 6 windows...go figure....).
     

     
    To coat the inside of the hull and protect the wood in the long term, I use an epoxy resin: easy to mix, odorless and fluid enough to be brushed inside the hull: 
     

     

     

     
    Planking the hull was done in a very conservative way and I would recommend this approach. The wood strips provided in the kit are not of great quality. Quite a few strips did split, providing me with two nice triangular shapes, that can come handy occasionally. Technically, the planking would require a set of 25 planks from keel to wales and three sets of planks per side (Bow, stern and side), or the equivalent of 75 planks. CAF model provides exactly 150 strips of 3x8 mm wood. Some of the planks (a small number fortunately) were 10 mm wide, some were made of a very soft wood, some made of very hard poplar or white wood. Basically a lot of disparities in the strips.
     

     
    Because of that, I went with a very conservative route and tried to use as much as possible the left overs and cuts. I managed to plank the entire hull with exactly 103 strips and have 47 left of various qualities.
     

     
    The next set of instructions calls for the following: 
     

     
    Although I have glued the rear decks, I disagree with the approach of gluing all decks at this stage and prefer to wait until the hull is completely done. After a thorough sanding of the hull, the flotation line should be marked and coppering (tiling - A) as well as a light second planking (0.4 mm thick) in the visible wood sections, should be made.
     
    Step #9 has been done in part, as the wales (B) were glued before the start of the planking. Upper hull and channels (C) will come later (see below):

    Foc's'l and gangway planking is now complete.  Hopefully photo's tell the story.
     
    The position of the cathead has been estimated, and a rather bizare planking arrangement was used to hopefully ensure that this will look OK once the cathead is finally installed, basically wanted the planking to be as prototypical as possible, although this will mean staring at a rather jarring joint until this is installed.  The second photo in the series below shows how I'm anticipating this will look once the cathead is in place, and which will essentially hide the joint of the waterway and the artificial planking arrangement.  Once the angle of the plank-waterway termination was less than 45 deg, a switch was made to hooking the ends of the planks, and each of these had to be cut and shaped from 6mm strip (these were tapered the same as before)

    The process was continued until the area was complete.  The only deviation being that the last 2 planks on each side were tweaked a little more to try to get these as even looking as possible, and of course the last plank being the most laborious to get an acceptable fit. It is hard to see in the photos, but the curve of the plank can be challenge to ensure that the simulated caulking looks as consistent as possible.  I eperience this challenge on the quaterdeck as well, but a solution that helped here was the use of thin plates of clear mica to help position these as consistently as possible until glue sets (I use PVA glue almost exclusively for planking).

    The gangway planking in the waste was pretty straightforward, (in fact the only non-shaped planks on the entire top deck) and comprised almost my last acceptable pieces 4mm maple strip.  It was very close, but I did not run out thankfully.  Photo below shows how the gangway planking 'sits' on the lip of the entryway platforms that form part of the quarterdeck.  The gangway does not have a waterway.

    Finally, some overall shots of the top deck, the foc's'l has not been scraped or cleaned up at all yet, which will be the next task.  The question I ask myself is whether the time and effort to taper the foc's'l planking was worth it.  I suspect that anyone looking at this would never notice as the final effect is very subtle, but I can't help but feel that the reason this is hard to see is simply because it complements the shape of the foc's'l without drawing attention to itself.  Overall, I am very pleased with the result, and with this almost complete, it will be nice to be able to turn to other tasks.

    Think I've got a bit of catching up to do.  Firstly, heres the Captain Cook Monument in Waimea, no undercooked beef wellington shots in this one   .  Found the beach he landed at, nothing special but couldn't locate the plaque that allegedly marks the spot according to guide books.
     

     
    I have managed at least an interim milestone, the completion of the starboard copper...this task just goes on and on
     
    Couple of items I've found to be helpful:
    Super Solvent - I've found this product to be highly effective at getting rid of any CA glue residue (at least the Admiralty Pro thick stuff).  Wiping over the surface of any potential smearing is usually enough Some plates plates require very acute angles to be cut and when using scissors (which I find by far the easiest), the ends tend to curl and distort horribly.  I found that cutting these as part of a larger section this problem is eliminated, although care is needed still to separate them.
     
    And the results.  Some of the photos are before I cleaned to plates with copper cleaner, which I did to ensure that there was no CA residue anywhere.  These will need to be done again once all the plates are on as I can guarantee more finger prints.  Managed to do the copper plate pattern at the bow that seems to be prevalent on so many models and AOTS drafts, slight discrepancies in the plates will only become less noticeable as the copper ages and darkens.  Overall I'm very happy with the Amati plates, and slight plate misalignments that just seem to be inevitable when using CA glue are tolerable.  Not sure I could do it any better if I were to do it again, so I think that's the yardstick to meaure to.
     
    At the bow, I plated the cutwater first and tried to shape the plates on the planking to match the required curve.  Its far from perfect but will do.  I think these areas are inherently limited given the thickness of the plates, I suspect using copper tape would allow a more scale appearance.
     
    I drilled some small holes in the waterline batten to simulate nails and highlighted with pencil, these are not to scale but felt it gives it a little bit more functional relevance.
     

     
    Et voila!  The pinkish hue of freshly cleaned copper reminded me on the AOTS Diana picture, I was very pleased with the lines that appear once the waterline is apparent. Obviously next step is to continue with the other side....

    Always happy to receive constructive criticism, I have followed Jason’s suggestion and after several attempts, have made the hance scrolls larger so that they sit above the line of the gangway.
     

     
     
    I was moving on to the deadeyes and links but I couldn’t get on with the 5mm deadeye strap so have ordered some replacements from CMB. I also have some doubts about the sizes of deadeyes supplied. In the kit are 5 and 3mm versions but looking at the AOTS and the NMM drawing, there appear to be three different sizes with the royal backstays running down to scale 2.5mm deadeyes. I have some of this size left over from HMS Fly that I can use
     
    In the meantime, I have finished off the stern by fixing the rudder coat and chains. The rudder coat was made from some non-woven lens cleaning cloth cut to shape and painted with Tamiya Nato Brown.
     

     
    The chains are kit supplied and blackened with Birchwood Casey Brass Black in the usual way.
     

     
    I believe that there should also be a cable (pendant?) attached to the end of the chains that leads back to the mizzen channels as shown in this photo of the starboard quarter of Victory taken back in 2020 but I want to look into this more before deciding what diameter this should be.

     
     
    The quarterdeck and forecastle decks are now glued in place, covering most of the work that went into the upper deck (much to my wife’s consternation) but before doing so, I filled in the two top-tackle scuttles that don’t appear on the NMM models and plans for Diana.

    The breastwork on the quarterdeck is pretty similar in terms of how it's accomplished.  First step is to turn the stanchions on the lathe. The tricky part (as I mentioned) is that these are double sheaved instead of single singled.  I'll tell you, at 1/64 that's a real bear. The actual metal sheave needs to be so thin (less than .5mm) that there was just no real way I could notch it small enough - so I gave up on that and settled for just having the ring in the slot - so to speak.  Creating the slot started with drilling holes in line, then picking them out gently with a #11 scalpel as much as I could.  Next, I shaved down my smallest needle file to almost paper thin so that the grooves were only on one side and one edge.  Finally, I gently filed out each groove a tiny bit at a time.  
     
     
     
        The sheaves are cut from a 2mm metal tube filed down on each side until they fit into the slot.  The slot determined the size of the ring, not the other way around. File - test fit - file - test fit, etc.  Here's a progression of what that looked like.  Each stanchion took almost 90 minutes to get cut and grooved out. Sorry, the focus isn't great on these two.  Probably because I was cross-eyed from filing out the grooves.
     
     
     
      I took a different approach for the railing this time - instead of two pieces, I measured out a single piece with about .5mm overlap on each side of the stanchion and cut square holes to fit - starting with drilling out a hole then filing with a square edge needle file.  This took much longer than the 'two piece' method, but eliminated the very slight line you can see in the forecastle railing. The edges of the railings were scraped for a little decoration.
     
     
     

     
      Gluing it all together was a trick.  And yes - I noticed the middle stanchion was crooked upon taking the photo (ah, the joys of macro) and fixed it.
    The railing is mounted on the deck and follows the shape of the deck.  Good thing I had to fix that middle stanchion, because after the railing is placed on the deck, the bottom rail sits a fraction higher on the middle post. It was helpful to dampen the railings as I fit it to the deck - even so I was anxiously anticipating the whole thing to crack as I bent it.  I also added a pin in the middle stanchion as I affixed it to the deck to hold the structure it in place while I clamped it down.
     
     
     
       The railings are extended to the gangways with two more stanchions and extended railings with an "S" curve to them. The stanchions are turned on the lathe with a little round newel post top. The railings are cut from a single block of Walnut. I cut them out with the jigsaw together to ensure that they mirror one another, then after the shape is sanded I split them into two railings on the Byrnes saw.
     
     
     
     
     
        From there it's the fit-sand-fit process until it's snug. After everything is fitted and glued, the edges are all gently sanded and smoothed out and the whole thing is given the Tung oil treatment. Overall, I'm pretty stoked with how this turned out - especially at 1/64. The FFM shows an additional decorative metal piece that connects the upper railing to the gangway railing - however, if we remember; my drop to the gangway is an an extra step because of the thickness of my Swiss Pear decks - so that extra metal piece just looked funky and out of place.  I fit "Lawnmower Man" for scale, and it all looked functional, safe, and viable - so I left it well enough alone.
