Royal William by marktiedens - FINISHED - Euromodel - scale 1:72

Recommended Posts

I have been stressing out about these curved stairs from the very beginning. You make it look so simple! Well done.

Regards, Keith

Thanks Keith & Lawrence. One thing I forgot to add to my last post is the bottom of the staircase was narrowed down to 10mm & the top steps ended up at 13mm wide. It looks just the opposite in the last picture, but it`s just the camera angle. Also forgot to add that stringers were added to the sides of the steps - I had to curve & add a twist in them to fit right - that was the hardest part. I have been conversing with Pete as to whether their should be an inner balustrade or not & am leaning toward leaving it on. The plans show an inner balustrade, but it seems to be absent on contemporary models. Have to think about that for awhile.

G'day Mark

You got a knack of making a difficult job look easy. Great job on the spiral staircase!

If I can put my money worth in, I would leave the inner balustrade on. Bugger the other models! It's yours and you are doing a superb job what ever you decide to do.

Another small update - made up the skid beams for the ship`s boat using 2x2 & 2x3mm lumber,& added gussets at the corners,& glued in place.

After that I drilled & filed the holes in the catheads & glued them in place. Still waiting for some small blocks to arrive so I can get the rest of the guns in place on those upper decks.

Another update - all the cannons with carriages are now in place & rigged. Very fiddly work - the blocks are only 2.5mm long & difficult to work with. Also the curved ladders are now in place & a curved handrail added up to the upper quarter deck breast rail.

Update - I thought it would be a good time to build the bell tower. It`s simply 3 metal pieces glued together with the bell. I also added a rope for the clapper.

The side entry was next to build. after opening some of the recessed areas the sides & floor were painted black with gold trim. I had some L shaped timber from a previous build which I cut to length & chamfered the ends to make the steps. After those were glued in place I fitted the roof & turned some support posts from 2mm timber & glued in place. Finally ,2 floor supports were shaped & glued in place under the floor.

G'day Mark

i agree with Pete. The fine and very delicate touches that you are doing, makes the model one of a kind!

sorry I've been away, have been trying to catch up all of the incredible logs in MSW like this one.

Your canons are also showing your usually high standards.

Sorry to ask though, Should the bell tower be a bit taller? To me it looks a bit squatty.

Mark & Greg - your comments prompted me to do a little research and Lavery wrote that both the Royal William & the Victory had a hand wheel attached to the rotating beam which enabled the belfry to be relatively short in height. Just out of interest, the attached photo shows the bell & belfry for the Victory where you can just see a 'crank' handle on top of the beam. Maybe there was a hand wheel in the original build and before a re-fit ?

Update - I decided to make the channels for the chainplates next. First ,I cut the channels from the kit supplied wood & shaped them to fit the curve of the mounting areas. Then I filed some grooves just deep enough for the chainplates to fit in. A strip will be added to the outside edge after the chainplates are fitted. I didn`t have enough wide strips to make the support knees,so I made them out of basswood. Then I made the metal support arches from .8x1.5 brass bar using a combination of looping & needle nose pliers. Brass pins were installed to help hold the channels in place.

Mark - now that's something to behold. Looks really great !

Pete

G'day Mark

Pete has said it all. Ditto from me.

Your RW is pinnacle of all RW builds. As I said before your log is a must see for anyone whom is thinking of building a RW from Euromodel.

Well done and I am looking forward for your next 'little update'.

Keep them coming

Update - all the gun port lids on the closed ports are now in place. The hinges are from Rick at Modelers Workshop - the kit hinges are way too short. Rick`s hinges are a little short for the middle & lower lids, but still better than I could find elsewhere. Short sections of wale planking were added to the lids that cut into the wales. The ropes are still to be added. Also made & installed sheaves just forward of the side entries. There are 2 chesstrees per side which I made using some lion heads left over from a previous build. The "mouth" was drilled out for the rope to pass through. I then made the rigols above the ports in some .8x1.5mm brass strip, forming them with a combination of looping & needle nose pliers. The port side still needs to be finished up.

edit - the hinge parts of the closed lids were simulated by cutting the heads off some black HO railroad nails, bending them 90 degrees,& drilling small holes, were pushed in to meet the top of the hinge straps.

Whow Mark !!!

The fine detail in your work really sets this build up on a pedestal and contains detail often overlooked - like the ogee and arched rigols and especially the addition of extra timber pieces onto the port lids.  That latter point is exactly how the lids were produced in order to produce a uniform surface when the lids were shut (and evident in one of the above photos).  With regards to the hinge straps, another nice touch but for others reading this, the usual method was to use some thin brass sheeting - so no problems there creating the straps. The ornamental chesstree pieces (for the main tack) are a nice touch, especially when that style was typical on the this ship when it started out in life as the Prince, launched in 1670.

Update - chainplates are now installed. I substituted the lower links from the kit with smaller links because the kit links(on the left in the first picture)had holes that I thought were way too big & out of scale. I used a string & some stub masts to set the angles of the chainplates. Unfortunately, the chains were supposed to reach the middle wale but due to my error in positioning the wale too low they don`t quite reach. To make them long enough to reach the wale, they would be way too long.

G'day Mark

There's only 1 thing that I can negatively say about your build, more so your log. You are too bloody honest for your own good. Not many people would know about your wales being too low, and the ones who does wouldn't matter to them because they would know how difficult it would be to get the right.

So keep up your outstanding work, but be less true full in the future.
