Great Republic 1853 by rwiederrich - FINISHED - four masted extreme clipper

Recommended Posts

Thanks Patrick...I really appreciate that.  I feel I spend more time in research then on the build itself.  I was prefabricating parts for the spider rings that hold belaying pins around the mast feet.

It's funny how it all comes together in a convincing manner, when it feels sometimes that I'm rushing...comparatively speaking.  Actually I like working fast......My 1/96 hybrid build of the Cutty Sark on her repair ways(getting a new rudder)...took me 3 months to build.   So in retrospect...this is one of the longest builds I've engaged in.

3 months to build this....

Thanks Captain P......

Patrick...I had plenty of time on my hands at the time.......I also built my custom/scratch built Glory of the Seas in just as many days...however, I was side tracked by building the custom Portuguese Fierra (AKA Cutty Sark) that I have not yet finished her.

Trouble is...I was side tracked on the Fierra with a new build the custom clipper ship, Donald McKay.  Before I even finished the main mast on the McKay, I drank the cool-aid and began my new build the Great Republic and the Fierra  and the Donald McKay are not completed either.   What a joke.  Now I have little time to finish any of them.  I should probably go back and begin finishing the Glory.

See what you did   Patrick...now I'm all guilty and stuff.......:default_wallbash:

Hi Rob

Hehehe...sorry about that!  Ya gotta stay off the cool aid!

It's still amazing how you do them. It takes me 12 to 18 months just to do one of mine (and mine are minuscule compared to your giants)!

Have a great weekend.

Cheers

don't feel bad Rob.......I'm one of the originals :)   if I get tired of what I'm working on at the moment.....I just open my closet and pull out another hull.   I'm somewhat of a compulsive person....can't keep an idea in my head for too long.......it eats me alive! :D  :D    I have other builds and ideas I'd like to get started,  but now I can't till I clear out some of these lingering projects.

Popeye...I was reading back in the Glory of the Seas log and found my own words that I wanted to finish the Glory before I begin the Great Republic.  I got the plans and was intrigued to copy the frame plates....then what would a cut frame look like?.....and so on and so on.  And before I knew it...(In one day) I had copied and cut out all the bulkheads....cut the keel and placed all the bulkheads and internal supports...and was ready for planking :o

So...one fabrication led to another....Oh, and looking forward, I had to make my own copper plates and the machine to make them...and so forth and so on.....

All the while, forgetting my promise to myself to finish the Glory of the Seas first.

That brings me to where I am thustly.

I'm almost at the same place with both vessels at this point...and jumping ship now is a good time..plus the change of pace will bring much needed enthusiasm and a break.

Boy it has been a while, hasn't it?  I've only just now installed the port and starboard davits and rigged the boats to them.  I've had much family issues as of late..new grand babies, in-laws passing away...so I've not been doing much.  But to answer your question.

I didn't use brass strips...I used soft metal rod wire about 1mm dia., cut them for convenience sake(bout 1.5"long) and then using a hammer and anvil smashed one end to represent the chainplate mounting plate.  I then cleaned the smashed area up and evened them...bent them in the correct locations and pressed them into pre made slots in the channedl.  Leaving just enough of the metal exposed on top of the channel to secure the dead-eye to.  Then I covered the recesses with a finishing strip.  I then secured several finishing rivets on the plates.

Thanks for asking.

Well Pat..I can be relatively fast when I'm actually working on the models.  As of late, time has been precious and that tends to keep my modeling hours to a severe minimum.  Thanks for the comments.

Rob,

Thanks for the reply.  Sorry to hear of your loss, but happy for you having grand children.

I thought about smashing some round wire flat but assumed I wouldn't be able to get uniform results.  I will try your method. Again  I say thanks.

Doug...when smashing wire..use a flat head punch to contact the wire and strike it, instead of the wire.  This way you can have more control of what the wire does under compression.  Then you can return to them and use a moto tool and grind/file them to make them all  similar.

Rob,

Thanks for that tip.  Yeah, I was going to pound on the wire directly.

Yes..the flat head punch concentrates the force and makes very nice flat portions to the wire.

I'll begin and finish each mast as a single project to make the building go faster(in my mind).

Here I've begun the rigging of the shrouds and lanyards for the formast.
