Wow!  Compared to the Amati Adventure I am finishing up, the detailed instructions in this kit are overwhelming: ship plans, parts lists, hull profile templates, rigging plans(!).  This looks like it is going to be a fun build!  There are a LOT of cast metal bits compared to my three other builds, so I imagine I'm going to be honing my painting skills!

Carving up the hull to match the profiles - a little more woodworking than I had to do for the other solid hull (St. Helena)...

Hull shaped and bulwarks thinned - It's kind of strange switching from metric (my first three builds had everything in millimeters) to standard - going to take some getting used to!

If someone had said to me a month ago that I'd be able to drill a hole in something that is only 1/16" wide, I'd have told them they were nuts.

Brian,

One of the "interesting" aspects of this hobby is that we do end up doing things that we never thought we could do.   I hope that makes sense....

On the page for Model Shipways Phantom, in documentation section, is a praticum for the Phantom. The kit is also a solid hull model. It may help you with yours, and is much more detailed than MS's regular booklet.

I recently bought the plans for the HL, to use in building my plastic PYRO/Lindberg version of her.

I found a nice piece of maple stock at 3/32" thick (perfect for this application) and created a nice stem and curve piece.  Here's the keel, sternpost and stem....

Chuck wrote that Practicum for Phantom, and he also wrote one for Sultana, another solid hull model. It's worth reading both as he offers a couple of different techniques as well as a host of additional information and instructions. The Sultana Practicum is available here in the NRG database of articles:

Carved rudder from same 3/32" maple stock.  Extra stock to go through hole in hull up to wheelhouse.

The HL is a fun build - once you get used to the small scale, that is!  She is looking mighty nice.  That rudder came out very well - will you be coppering it as well?

I believe this build will test the limits of my dexterity and eyesight!  :)

I will be coppering, but am unsure about which technique I'm going to use.  Since this will be the first coppering I've done, I need to find a balance between difficulty and aesthetics.  I'm leaning toward long strips with rivet marks (either using a punch wheel or just adding them by hand using a pin or needle) instead of small individual rectangles of copper.

Thanks for the kind words!

Pilot house.  I used my inkjet printer and some transparent shipping label paper to print the doors, panels and windows.  I'm pretty sure I'd make a mess of it if I tried to paint those things by hand...

Wheelhouse - carved the body from a block of wood, added the top (1/32" sheet), bronzed the wheel and added the walnut stanchions.  Stained the top and painted the body flat tan.

Taking a break from working on the deck "furniture" - back to the ship - adding decking and needed to add some height to the bulwarks - they were way short of the 11/32" to 3/8" mentioned in the instructions.

Testing out how my method of coppering is going to look.  I took the supplied 1/4" copper tape and cut it in half lengthwise (so it's now 2 strips 1/8" wide).  I then used a pounce wheel and steel ruler to create the bolt indentations and applied the result to the keel.  Thoughts?

There were 2 small vents included in the kit (From studying the pictures of completed models and looking at the plans, they go right behind the windlass).  But there are 2 larger vents behind the smokestack on top of the deckhouse.  They weren't in the parts list (like the coaling rings which also show on the plan), so I tried my hand at carving them.  Presented for your critique (along with 2 cannons on carriages)....

The instructions say to create gunport lids from 1/32" stock, use the copper tape to simulate hinges and glue them (open) at the top of the gunports...

In all the images I've seen of a completed Harriet Lane model ship, I haven't seen the gunport lids.  Should I skip this step?  Thoughts?  Can anyone point me to examples of the Harriet Lane which have gunport lids?

While I need to go back and get you the source, here are 2 relatively contemporary drawings which are also contradictory - one with and one without gun port lids.  Note the one with lids shows them opening down, not up.

The "official" picture from the USCG Historian is likewise odd - no ports, but I am a bit confused by the gaff sail on the foremast.  Given the location of the pilot house, and the smoke stack, it appears that the fore sail would be a great mess if ever used. Note that this is the only picture that includes that sail.
