Mare Nostrum by Worldway - FINISHED - Artesania Latina - Scale 1:35 - Fishing Trawler - First Wooden Ship Build

Recommended Posts

I "borrowed" a needle threader from my daughter's sewing kit.  I was skeptical that it would work but was very pleasantly surprised when it did.  I liked it well enough to go and buy a couple more for spares (I tend to misplace tools so having a backup saves time hunting).  (They cost about a buck each - my cheapest modelling tool purchase yet!)  The only complaint I have is that sometimes you have to thread from the back and judging where the hole is is a bit of a skill to develop.

If anyone has figured out how to make a threader that works from the front when pushing a line through I'd be happy to get the details!

Thanks Steve,

Good description, thank you.

I use the Line covered in CA, about 20mm, and before the CA dries, I wipe with the "Digits."

If the line isn't stiff enough, do it again until it is.

You have then got a nice rigid thread you can push through all manner of tiny holes. (Blocks/Deadeyes/Rings)

Once through the hole in question, grab the end with Tweezers, Hooks, whatever.

Have a go on something "Off Ship" first.

If the "Bodkin" :) gets brittle, (As it does after a few holes), repeat the CA and your good to go!!

Unsure of where I got the tip but use this method exclusively, much easier than a needle threading device when the Rigging gets "Busy."

Cheers....HOF.

I'm still progressing forward. I've finished the deck furniture although I still have to add hinges and handles to the hatchway.  I intend to keep the hatchway and the engine cover glued.  I don't want them removable because I don't think there is enough detail below to make access available.  Like Brian said, it will be our little secret that there is a couple of beds below that no one will ever see.

I haven't included pictures in this post because there really isn't anything new to see.  I will add pictures on my next post.

I have designed my plinth but it will be very basic and I'm not even sure it will work.  I basically just traced the outline of #6 and #10 bulkheads and will cut them out of mahogany.  I will connect the two with 1/4" dowels.  My only concern is that I am using 3/4" thick mahogany. I'm not sure how the boat will sit on it.

I actually tried seizing the other night just for practice although I'm not going to use it on my boat.  I was surprised how well it turned out.  Probably first time lucky.

I made the plinth.  Nothing special but functional.  There is some extra room to add some felt pads.

I used the sheet that the bulkheads were cut out from.  From the drawing I got with the model, I determined that bulkheads 6 and 10 were the best positions.  I traced the opening from the sheets onto a piece of wood and cut them out with my scroll saw. I hope you understand what i'm trying to describe.

Brilliant. Can I borrow your scroll saw? - you could PM it to me . Seriously though I should invest in a 3D printer for stuff like this.

Well I'm on the finishing stages.  Tonight I worked on the upper structures and mounted the deck furniture permanently.

Continuing the final details.  I started some rigging. I know it's not "proper" but it is as per the instructions.

I did a little more sanding to the plinth and added a second coat of varnish

I had a small accident and knocked the model over.  Because of that one of the frames broke off.  Not a big deal, just re-glued it.

I'm hoping to have this finished this weekend.

I spent a half hour re-jigging my work area in anticipation of the Bluenose.  Hopefully I will start the build log very soon.

Although the Mare Nostrum has given me a lot of grief, and although I have seen a lot of much better examples in other build logs, I'm still happy and proud what I have done with this little kit.  I will display this proudly.

Hi Chap,

I'll be watching your "Bluenose" also if you don't mind.

I take it that it is the 1/75 A/L version?

Will be good to see how this progresses and have been watching your Mare Nostrum build thus far.

I guess you will have learned much from this, and hey, I'm still learning after 10 or so years doing this. (I'm still making basic errors)

Take your time Sir, consider things carefully and if not sure, take some time, Think/Sleep on it, it will work out o.k.

(My BNII took 10 months, was my second build. (Photos are available if these would be of any assistance.)

Cheers....HOF.

So here it is.  The final pictures of my Mare Nostrum.  I finished tonight.  However, there is one addition I want to make but the part hasn't come in yet so I won't close off the build quite yet.  But for the most part, it's finished. It's not as detailed as it should have been but to me it's a good model.  There were some discrepancies between the plans and the picture on the box.  But I did what I thought was correct.  The bench is now empty, waiting for the next build.

Nice job man, I am about 25% done with this kit, got side tracked with a dollhouse kit, and lost my picture instructions!

Thanks for posting the pictures about the kit pieces not fitting, it seems everything piece I got with the kit is off.  pain in the a$$

I got some inspiration from Moonbug and decided to pull out the gear.  I set up a photo area to take "better" pictures of my builds. Besides I'm having issues with using my cell phone now, not sure of the problem.   Just seeing how things turn out with these pics.

Hi Derek,

Looking at your light setup here, and have a couple suggestions. Since you're photographing such a small object, you can get that softbox or umbrella really close to the model. That will also soften the light up considerably. And if you get one of the lights behind your sheet, you can put that one a couple stops above key exposure and wash out the creases.

Best,

Achu
