It’s all looking very smart John. I’m looking forward to seeing the planking - what do you intend using?

Thanks, Keith.  I'm still tossing up between Privet (which is what the framing is) or Cherry Ballart - a dark coloured Australian native timber.  My current thinking is that the Cherry Ballart will be too dark.  I might save that for highlighting details.

That's a nice before and after shot John.  Its good to know I'm not the only one who has to go back and tidy up.  She's progressing nicely and looking very fine.

Jim.

Found your model of the Meteor searching on line .... very impressive. Do you happen to know if this is the same Meteor that departed Liverpool 24 Sept 1858 and arrived in Melbourne 29 Dec 1858. This is the ship and voyage on which my great great grandparents arrived from Wales in Australia.

Cheers,

Not sure if it's the same ship, Gary, but a search of the shipping section of the newspapers of the day would certainly give you a good clue as these usually listed the name of the ship's Master. As the 'Meteor' I'm building was a Hamburg ship, the Master should have a German name.

Got some time back in the museum at last and, in spite of having a lot of visitors stop to talk (school holidays here), I managed to get a bit done.

The inside of the hull is looking fairly civilised now and the outside is at least starting to come together.  Perhaps I'll actually finish the frame one day!

She wouldn't have come far in this here state ... not much of a transport from the UK to anywhere as yet. Though, very crisp looking frames

Another update.  The rough fairing around the stern is now done and the whole hull looks a lot more civilised now.  Next step will be to start on the transom framing and then a total clean up of the outside of the hull before some planking starts.  I really feel that getting to the stage of thinking about the transom framing is a real milestone.  I seem to have been stuck on the main hull framing for ever.

Well, the 'Meteor' finally has a stern!  The major elements of the transom framing are now in place so she's looking like a ship at last.  Still some detail pieces to fit around the transom and then some final fairing up and sanding of the exterior before I give her a bit of planking to firm up the whole structure.

It will be a little while until my next update as I won't be in at the museum for the next three weeks.

When the time comes that you do the masts and rigging,

the NRJ  reprinted the following, I think Dutch,  19th century book  in at least 19 parts

LE COMTE: PRAKTIKALE ZEEVAARTKUNDE PT. 1
EDSON,MERRITT
NAUTICAL RESEARCH JOURNAL
1974
20
170-182
MASTING RIGGING 19TH DUTCH

The CD for volumes 1-40  should cover it.

It may be more germane  than English or US texts.

There is also a reprint that may be still available covering ship building close to your subject in its region.

VORLEGE-BLATTER FUR SCHIFF-BAUER   1835
KLAWITTER,GUSTAV D
HORST HAMECHER
KASSEL
1978
SHIP BUILDING

I grabbed what I could of reprints, when available  figuring that the window was a narrow one -  this being well before PDF.
