Painting them is pretty close to painting the hull, a mixtyre of paint, washes (both dark and light ones), sanding and drybrushing. I also got a lot of help by looking at Claytons pictures of how he made his Vasa masts. I might have to remake the mizzen mast as I think its the only one of them not correct in shape (the others are not bad at all). ( if that's what you did )..... great! idea using the washes too!!..... you do some great things Matti,and , after all you've done on this inspiring build I'm sure you'll have no problems rigging her up. Use dymo tape, the old hard kind that's used for making labels. place it where you need the groove. Then just scribe with a exacto blade after the tape. First a light stroke with the sharp side then with the backside of the blade. Go light on the hand, so you don't lose control. For wider grooves you can use a sharp screwdriver, but I think it would be to wide for these grooves. You need a new piece of tape for each groove as the glue will not stick more than once, at least not on wood like this, so buy a few rolls Not difficult to do but takes a little practice to get used to. And you need to be cautious as always using an exactoblade. Easy to hurt yourself when slipping. NAZGÛL Posted May 12, 2014 Author Share #1094 Posted May 12, 2014 Small update of the work on the masts: I finally found reference of the mizzen masthead so I redid it, the BB is incorrect in the plans (if I'm not missreading it totally). Also did the the other parts on the mast heads and now I'm planning for the bowsprit details. The BB original parts are not to bad, but it's easy to make better ones and make them close to the one on the real ship. As you can see I got the ropes and I toned it down slightlly. Then I started with the first märs and it's is almost finished. As I will add skanskläder later on the sides of it will not be visiable. Therefore I focused on the top and bottom sides. I don't have the skills to scratch the whole thing and decided to use the main round part is from the kit.First thing I did was to weather and add planks to its top and bottom to make it look more realistic. I only used two of the kits rings to get it closer to the original proportionwise, otherwise it would far to tall. As I have some spareparts from earlier I could double the number of parts that hold the rings. I had to remake the taller ones. Also added short scratched details. All parts where painted with washes before and after assembly and also some drybrushing. Unfortunately I already made the lower topmasts of the foremast and the main mast according the Manual but I will follow your idea of putting only 2 instead of the 3 rings in the other topmasts. It will be necessary to make and adjust the size of all the pieces that hold the rings but I don´t think will be a problem. From now on I will wait your building progress before continuing!! I got my hands on spare sheets for the kit earlier and doubled the number of the parts holding the rings. The small squared parts are scratched. Karl, I'm sure your will look fine.
