I-400-Class Submarine by mhkash - FINISHED

Recommended Posts

Hello All
I started Building the I-400 Class Submarine Model, which is a Japanese Submarine and were considered the largest submarines of World War II and remained the largest ever built until the construction of nuclear ballistic missile submarines in the 1960s. I got the Following Info from Wiki :)

Each submarine had four 1,680 kW (2,250 hp) engines and carried enough fuel to go around the world one-and-a-half times. Located approximately amidships on the top deck was a cylindrical watertight aircraft hangar, 31 m (102 ft) long and 3.5 m (11 ft) in diameter. The outer access door could be opened hydraulically from within or manually from the outside by turning a large hand-wheel connected to a rack and spur gear. The door was made waterproof with a 51-mm-thick (2.0 in) rubber gasket.

I plan to follow the same Tech. that I use in building Model Schooners and brigs. Here are some photos ..
Thank you

Hello  All
I did some planking work on the I-400 Sub, this is the first planks layer, I intend to have 3 layers , the first is 3 mm to build the shape then the second layer will be 1.5 mm after some sanding , and this is to have a smooth straight surface for the model .. Then I will apply the final Layer using also a 3 mm thick Balsa wood to enable the refinement and corrections.. Below are some photos .. please feel free to add your remarks.

Thank you

Definitely looks like a submarine now.

Thank you very much Chris for your encouragement, I think the Hanger will be a challenge. It has a cylindrical shape, however, it appears as not fully cylindrical, since it is implanted in the Hull, please notice the lower part in the image below.

Thank you

I have always known that the I-400 class was big but I have never actually seen the decks populated with people for a reference. That last picture is a real eye opener for me!

Yes, indeed it was huge, imagine a hanger that could stow up to three float planes , the Aichi M6A Seiran.

Thank you

I've read about those but do you know how they broke them down for storage?   I'm just curious.

Good Morning Mark / Good Morning all

I was curious about this too and I found the answer here :). The answer lies in the image , however it is about discussing the engine warming method used to avoid suffocation.

image.png.3d7d2d1c1a9c74fb85b1d90ff53f0beb.png

In this video , minute 16:55, is the answer.Since the Hanger is 11 feet diameter , the Seiran wings were designed to rotate 90 degrees, clockwise and anti-clockwise to fit in. If you could spare an hour of your time , you may find this video very interesting.

Thank you

Ah... thanks for that.  I didn't realize they rotated the wings.   I'll go spend some time on the video since I bookmarked it.

Hello All

I've continued work on the I-400. I've completed the planking (3 Layers as I intended) , Then, after using sandpaper , I applied a layer of Latex Putty to adjust the shape, then I started working on the Hanger as in the images.

I was reading some on the Warfare History Network and following some links and ran into this:  https://warfarehistorynetwork.com/2018/12/11/japans-underwater-aircraft-carriers/    I thought some might find this interesting.

Good Morning Mark / Good Morning All

Thank you Mark, this is very interesting indeed, I'm very fond of this piece, and am not surprised to know that US went on haunting it after the WWII and during the cold war. I'll read this article tonight. Here is the work progress.

Thank you

Good Morning All

I've completed the 3rd layer of planks using 2mm thickness balsa wood and the deck fence as well. The planks of this layer are not as normal planks, they have rectangle shape , 1.5cm x 3cm and I maintained 1 mm in between this 1mm space will be more visible after the weathering process. I also glued the Hanger on top and here are some shots.

Thank you
