Today I finished earlier and went to see Smederevo fortress 

 

Here are some pictures to share

 

 

Process of reconstruction of fortress is running ( when State has money) slowly, slower than ship modeling.

 

Important monument for Serbian History, and it is real a shame relative poor state of works on walls

 

I was walking on walls, climb on real scary rickety wooden stairway to the top of one of the reconstructed defensive towers, and sit  there some time, light a cigarette or two or three, and send myself over 500 years back, trying  to imagine and to visualize life in that small fortress (which long ago was nothing less than a capital city of middle age Serbian state), and a great battles who run there with old Ottoman conquerors in one of their way to north.

 

Just see that tiny fortress and imagine defense against 20-30-50.000 soldiers of Ottoman empire, and three months lasting siege ....

Thanks. There are some nice films of shipping in the Iron Gates but nothing (that I could find) predating the construction of the dam. I will keep looking. Somewhere in the archives of the old Yugoslav state TV the film will be waiting. I will keep looking.

There are not white panels there



There are another details, but about them - later. First to finish sanding of Her and second planking.

And another conclusion. Stern is not rounded as in my old plans, and at first I must do something about that thing

Oh, boy, even from air-plane you can see the deepness of my problem

Look and compare original plans and Campbell. Very very very different curvature. I put them in Photoshop as two layers, scaled to fit on straight line, and almost cry.

Any idea how to resolve this without remounting poop deck ?

The Campbell plan looks about right: the curve of the stern is elliptical, not circular.

As you know, I use Campell's plans exclusively in my build, as I feel they are the most accurate available for this ship.  Now that you have a copy, you can proceed with confidence.  My suggestions would be as follows:  establish known reference points on your build, such as distances between centerlines of masts, and scale Campell's plans to match in photoshop.  Next, make allowances where you can where you find discrepancies.  (You can adjust the waterways at the stern to compensate somewhat for the different curvatures.)  I've found it extremely helpful to mark the section lines from Campbell directly onto the build (deck and hull).  Nothing ever completely lines up (for me, at least), but it's a great joy when they do!  You just need to find the average overall that will balance out the entire model.  That being said, please remember that the real ship was built in 1869, with 1869 technology, and things would not have lined up 100% with their plans then;  and our frustrations with our models probably accurately mirror the original builders' frustrations as well. 

 

Your build is progressing marvelously, and your ideals you posted are very wise;  I would add two more:  1)  This is my hobby, and It's fun and relaxing. 

2)  Don't sweat the small stuff.

 

Happy modeling, it's the journey, not the destination!

Thx Bob, that was exactly I thought about, and that lead me to idea that it will be necessary (?) to remove mounted "white" panels and dead-eyes from poop deck, and after to use magic to re-mount dead-eyes. And If I should do so, why not dismantled the entire poop-deck and do it properly. And if I do that, why should not remove all of the nail-holders and did them on track (metal brackets for  dead-eye for instance). And if I do that, why should not make dead-eyes in proper size? And if I do that, why should not  .....

 

Ah, a lot to think about ....

Well, yes, you can go on and on...  I have many mistakes that I can live with, and indeed, if I ever finish my build, I'll be able to show my friends these mistakes that only I will know about.  When coppering the hull, I had a few nights of drinking beer and listening to music, happily coppering along; and the next morning waking up to badly aligned tiles;  having to remove 3 hours worth of work only to start again!  However, sometimes I left them as they are.  It all depends how much "work" you want to do.  The waterways on my build are badly misaligned toward the bow, but I sure won't remake the deck just to fix it.  Also, my deck has ripples that are not noticable when looking down upon it, but at a level view is very apparent.  I can live with this.

it would please me just as much,  that both of you gentlemen finish your builds,  rather than conceed due to problems and inconsistancies.    these builds hold the potential towards becoming a beautiful ship,  with or without thoses small details that would make it stand out, as a replica build.  I find it to be lots of fun,  throwing things at the wall,  seeing what sticks........and to much shegrin....what don't.

      when showing the boat to friends,  I show them what I added in.......they have no idea what the mistakes are.      as for your stern Nenad.......can you sand down the end of the stern to give it the look of being eliptical....you can always repair with filler and sand to shape later.   I'll look forward in seeing the continuances of your fine builds

I fixed poop-deck on way you suggested before I read your post. On copy paper is Campbell poop-deck and lines and curvatures now seems OK

I started making stern bulwark on copied line of poop-deck, to try some idea I pick up somewhere on MSW

Preparing to go to office, waiting for Admiral to finnish herself, on a way to garage little visit of workshop to see  if it glued properly .... It does not work. Lack of strength and it had immediately broked down when I remove paper and try strenght. Must try something else at the evening with layers in one peace each

I took a piece of 1/32" by3/16" basswood; soaked it in plain water over night, and formed it over a soda bottle, to let it dry.  It formed the stern bulwarks perfectly.

I'm kinda surprised that didn't work for you.......it was that flimsy....huh!   it looked good.......layered like bricks,  it would have been thought to be stronger than that.   you could try it again using a different glue,  or you could try three pieces,  the size Robert specified,  and stack them on one another.

Thank you for your interest.  Last month or two I am pretty occupied with some details, and last posts are about them. Reason: During sanding hull,  I concluded that first I must finish bulwarks, and then finish putty and sanding whole hull to get full and proper lines and curvatures, and after that to go forward. And bulwarks had some details to think about them, as you see in my earlier posts

 

For you, there are pictures you ask for

 

Today, I put bulwark on front deck

 

 

Also, I made some three layer piece from bulwark of poop-deck, but it is still under pressure to glue properly. As you can see, it is missing on poop-deck

 

 

And whole deck from birds-sight. My camera is only 5MP, and this is quite a large model

No, Popeye, I am not down, only my bad English. Sometimes I have not enough words to express well I am thinking of or fell about, or I am so tired to write on Serbian, translate with Google, find better words and phrases, to correct. CS is going well, in home is everything good, Admiral is happy ( with new carpet and fountain), kids ⁽¹⁾ ... no reason to be down (today). Meat mincer on job works with full strenght ( it means that money will come ...)

(1) - My son (22) had a brilliant idea to keep his bike ( Chinesse crusier 250 ccm) on street on two days with very heavy rain, without covering.

 

 

Result : very dead battery, and water in the impossible places in electrical installations, and only God know what else is burned out. He obviosly play the game named "How to drown my own bike". I would not even occur to me to pay for repairs, mister must learn something in harder way

 

BTW: Me, very smart and very self-confident, driving (car) over than 30 years, ( never driving bike before) , over two years ago in February ( winter with snow) have said to my self : You know it, it is easy. Result : 4 cm cut to the bone on left leg and surgery with sawing in Emergency Center ... Hi is obviosly not only fool in my home ...

thanks nenad shes looking really great so far. are you going to do another layer of planking or have you already done two?i think its looking really really good. I have a full booklet of pictures for each step and they have a detailed description for each one so if youre ever confused on a certain step i could post a picture for you of the manual.

I intend to do the following steps respectively

 

1. Finish bulwarks

2. Finish sanding and putty

3. Put moldings on hull ( 3 or 5, I ll see)

3a - make poop and mount it

4. Plank bulwark and poop with veneer and colour

5. plank water holes with alu-foil and colour it

6. plank rest of hull and poop with veneer strips and colour

7. cooper with zinc foil 

8. make doors for wather on bulwark

 

maybe it will be some step between

 

and then climb to deck for houses, furniture and other stuff there. I think that on this stage real works begin

I am also pleasantly surprised how She looks today. Proper lines and curvatures of hull !!!!! Yeah, I have done it !!! (almost).

 

During planking, I was pretty skeptical, but now, especialy when I have Campbell plans, and find MSW I really got a wings to go forward

For now, I think I have enough and maybe a bit to much ( my plans, Sergal step by step instructions, Campbell, Revel instructions, Billing Boats instructions, and some books, and some instructions for other ships, Internet, Google adn Picassa pictures, not to forget youtube ... to research and explore, and ....   MSW). If a day lasts 30-35 hours it will be enough
