I agree with you on this subject as well. In fact a while back I started a discussion here on MSW about this subject. Add sails or not. There was a wide range of opinions. When I built my USS Constitution I left the sails off because I really liked being able to see the extensive amount of rigging. On my Cutty Sark I furrowed the bottom sails so I could see through. Definitely an aesthetic  preference.

The both look good, but the constitution is another level from an visual preference. I've been after the Revell uss constitution 1/96 or the uss united states 1/96, for quite some time.

The Trumpeter Mayflower is FINISHED!  Thanks to everyone who provided input and advice, especially Krill4 and Bosco. I learned so much during this build that I will use in future builds. Making my own shrouds and ratlines was the biggest new endeavor. Some things I learned were the result of what I thought were short comings of the model that required improvising, some were personal experiments, and a number were recommendations from MSW members. I have no doubt there are a number of items about my build that are not authentic, but I am pleased with it. Authenticity of the rigging is probably the biggest area. The Trumpeter rigging instructions were limited so based on MSW recommendations I combined the rigging instructions from Trumpeter with the instructions I have from my English Man O’ War. I also primarily used the thread that came with the kit even though I expect all of it is not authentic scale size. I may paint and add a few figures here and there on the deck. Have some from a Revell 1/96 kit that I will check to see if the scale looks close enough. Next build my display case in which I plan to include a great stone I found. Give it the Plymouth Rock touch!  Then on to my next build! Again thanks to all the MSW members who followed along.

Very nice job, Bill!!  I can't believe how quickly you finished this build. You had said before you were planning to build the Heller Victory, case it, and display it to the left of your man-o-war. Is the plan still the same? Where will you display the Mayflower?

At the rate you go, you could cover the wall with ships 😉

I'm late to this party I know but I was very interested in your first post to see the kit deadeyes which had the three holes AND a groove around their periphery. There must be some new molding technology to allow this. You'll find the deadeyes supplied in the Victory kit to be unusable. This older kit's deadeyes have the three holes but just a single raised lip around the periphery since a grooved deadeye would prevent a standard two-part mold from opening cleanly. The lip only prevents the shroud from slipping off in one direction so it's well nigh impossible to tighten the loop and seize it. I've read where some modellers use glue as an aid but please, I urge you to buy some wood deadeyes to save your sanity. The Victory kit already has enough other problems to overcome.

By the way, the Victory took me five years as at first I only worked on her in the winter. I'll be interested to see how long she takes you!

Best regards,

Ian

Thanks Ian. Building these ships is what has kept me sane during Covid. I am retired so if I did not have a hobby to keep me busy my wife would probably run me off by now. My Mayflower will go on another wall in the same room. I have two smaller scale ships to build as well that will go with the Mayflower in time. The Airfix Wasa and Golden Hind. I will take your advice on the deadeyes for the Victory. I just now looked at them and see what you are talking about. Did you purchase new deadeyes for your Victory build?  Is your’s the Heller 1/100? If so, what size (mm) deadeyes did you get?  With each ship build I try to learn a little more before I approach the Victory and I expect it to take quite some time. I tease that it will be my shipbuilding PhD thesis.

Ian in my build up to starting the Victory (not to soon yet) you mentioned “enough other problems to overcome”.  There are many build logs on MSW for the Victory. I have read through several and plan to many more of them. Would you care to share problems you had to overcome?

Stunning build, you must be very proud. Great build log too, thank you for sharing, I too have learned a lot from it and taken a lot of inspiration from this. So thank you again. Can't wait for your next build.

Hi Jake,

You should consider opening a build-log of your own to introduce and discuss the project.  As far as the Mayflower is concerned, she is so early in English naval architecture that no sort of contemporary plans exist.  Whatever ornamentation she might have had would be minimal and completely conjectural through the modern lens.  I think naval historians are happy enough to have an approximate idea of her hull form as a merchant ship.

We are all works in progress, all of the time.

Good morning Jake. As you probably know there are a number of photos and videos on line showing the replica that was built years ago. That is what I used when building mine. There is also a great series on Amazon Prime Video (if you have that streaming) called Greatest Ships. There is an episode on the Mayflower where you can see the replica from all angles and up close. Of course as Hubac’s said above it is all conjectural.

Kind of fun looking back at a build-log from over two years ago! 😊

I agree with Kirill.
Mixed colors below the waterline are very unusual

Ps,

very nice paintwork  :imNotWorthy:

I have seen it rarely.  Note that HMS Victory currently has a white painted stripe as a waterline above the copper plating. USS Constitution has a red stripe above the copper.  I saw the Mayflower in Mystic, CT when she was visiting the shipyard several years ago but did not see a black lower hull.  But, I will bow to the expertise of the builder!

Bill
