King of the Mississippi by Adrieke - FINISHED - Artesania Latina - Scale 1:80 - with LED lighting

Morning Adrieke,

Thanks for pointing out where the gap is.

I didn't see it in the first place!

Slowly but steady you are getting there  :D

thanks Wim. it was too obvious to me i had to change it.

also had to redo the base as the one that has the wiring go through had come lose. was getting a bit messy. i decided to use some small nails on each side of the hole and tought i had them straight but it showed through.

redid it all and am letting it set now overnight. i wish i could have waited to fit the base but now that i start workign on the third deck i wont be able to turn her on her back to fit it comfartably.

Ah yes Adrieke

I had several joins like that in the Spirit as there was only one length of railing

I couldn't really see a way out of it  so I hid as much as I could and tried to cover the obvious ones with paint

I also see from the close up that the stair handrails on yours are fitted into the deck

The instruction in mine said to fix to the stairs themselves

I wish I had seen that before as it looks 200% neater

Keep up the good work

Mick

Adrieke,

You've been pritty sharp/observant. it's good to redo those things, as later on they will irritate you, because you know you should have corrected them.

thanks Mick yeah I am hoping that some paint on the joints will make them pretty invisible.

I had a look at your stairs and I see the difference but still looks good to me :)

this one was pretty obvious Carl . seems like I am constantly redoing things lol

Adrieke,

I think we all feel that way a lot more than any of care to admit.  I sometimes think maybe each kit or scratchbuild should be done in duplicate.  The first one to make all the mistakes on and the second is the 'golden' one.

that would be an idea Mark. maybe not a full second ship but partially so that you can try out certain things :)

haven started painting the brass railing yet but am working on the railings on the first deck and the lower part on the second deck

post-622-0-69567400-1369567083_thumb.jpg

not happy with how the 3rd deck stateroom sits. there is too much gap between it and the deck. I am trying to figure a way to make something that makes it click on to the deck but not found a good solution yet.

Really like those little clips Adrieke  :dancetl6:

You could get those into places the ones I use wouldn't go

I use the ones you see more often with the black scissor like body and red grips

Now I have a question Adrieke

I hope you don't mind me asking it here but you have a lot following this and I should get a good response

A lot of my current build is stained

Now we all know that plywood is not the best to take stain

Do you tend to stain anyway - Have you a foolproof way of staining - Do you give up and paint?????????????

Today I tried soaking parts in stain but they still came out uneven

Thanks for any responses

Mick

hi Mick. they are just clothes pegs and are good for small things like this but they don't open very wide.

on the Virginia I stained the railing tops and in some of the pics in the gallery you can see the unevenness. the same for the spiral staircase handrails on the kom.

I use a dishcloth to dab some stain on , wipe it off so its not as runny  and then gently rub it on the wood. that way I seem to be able to get the best consistency.

I am sure there are others that have better ways as I am very new to staining and am very wary when doing it as my first staining of the Virginia hull came out pretty badly .

Hey Adrieke

I found the wife was holding out on me and hadn't shown me that particular style of clothes peg

I have some now  :P

As to the stain I really don't know where to go next

If you have a look at my tram blog you can see the results I got with soaking

I have tried dabbing and rubbing like you, also painting on with a brush

I will be interested to see what others say about the subject

HI Mick

sorry but not sure what is best to do . its a bit slack that they didn't make these parts out of proper wood instead of ply.

while trying to figure out the best way to hold the 3rd deck stateroom I had to remove the wiring and lights from the 2nd deck. in doing so I broke off one of the pins from a LED so I need to redo that one.

post-622-0-06312400-1369657624_thumb.jpg

I didn't want to remove that part but as I wasn't sure if it will all fit in again . lets hope I did it right

looking at the curved walls on the stateroom i have decided to redo them. the mistake i made there was that i  oriented them wrong and the plywood doesn't bend as good as in the other direction.

post-622-0-59838700-1369657630_thumb.jpg

i decided on a construction of 2 bolts that will screw in to a little metal plate that sits underneath the deck. this means i will also need to be able to remove the ceiling of the stateroom to be able to reach the bolts. its getting more and more complicated  and maybe i should just put it all in and not worry about being able to open it up again

post-622-0-47689400-1369657636_thumb.jpg

the railings on second and third deck require 84 x 35 mm pieces of 1.5 x 3 mm sapelli so i taped a stop in the mitre box so i could easily cut them.

post-622-0-15456600-1369657644_thumb.jpg

and here all the pieces

post-622-0-76840300-1369657650_thumb.jpg

i finished all of the bottom parts of the railings on deck 2

I think I get what you're doing with the bolts.... I'm not sure if this is accurate or going to be useful but could you glue the nuts to the ceiling of the stateroom and run the bolt down into them from above. Then you wouldn't have to remove the ceiling to get to the bolts.

No I know just what you mean Adrieke

The thing is I presume any laser cut parts are going to be some sort of ply

I think the ultimate method is to paint a deep matt brown

As far as yours in concerned

It is a pain when you break or have to take off a piece

You never know if it is going back perfectly

Certainly looking a nice job though

I am going to really take my time with this tram and when I do my next ship I will try and get it as close to museum quality as I can with a kit build

Keep it up Adrieke

Randy that is sort of what i am doing but to screw the bolts in from above i need to get access to them and unless i want them visible from the outside i need to put them inside. i ll take some pictures to show you mre in detail :)

thank you Geoffrey :)

thanks you Mick  i ll be checking out you tram now and then as i have been tempted to buy a similar one :)

thanks Wayne. i notice i am getting more and more critical. sometimes i have to let them go because it would require too much work but these ones i can and will fix :)

I have redone the railing in 2 parts that had the  big gap (I glued a small scrap of brass left over where they link to give a bit of strength) and repainted so it looks like it is one piece now :)

also had a try at finishing of a railing on the 2nd deck. have learned that its best to add the 2 triangle ornaments first before adding the railing :)

Ah, but it's the gingerbread that makes these riverboats special.  From the pictures out there, they may look similar but the details give them their personality.  Lovely work on your details, Andrieke.  Nice fix on the railing.
