HMS Warspite by Lt. Biggles - FINISHED - Academy - 1/350 - PLASTIC - MK1 detail up set

Recommended Posts

By the end of 1943  she had  lost her 6in  gun barrels  but kept the barbetts,  also around this time they moved her boot topping highter up  as she was sitting deeper in the water  due to her various injuries  including only having Three props working.

So say for mid 1943  dutring her Italian opps  - she still had her 6in  guns  8 of them, her boot topping was towards the top of her flat area  above the torpedo bulge  (before going upwards where it slopes)   but the rest is as normal.

Been able to put abit more time into the ship instead of research so drilled out the port holes.

Plan is to connect the 2 hulls which dry fit together very well and then glue the 3 deck pieces on with any other hull parts and paint the whole thing like that. Before adding the wood deck. will try adding the armour plates with layers of primer and if that doesn’t work with thin paper from a refill pad which are much thinner than printer paper. For panel lines I’m wondering if I’ll pre shade them rather than scribe them as these ones are a lot more hidden in photographs

All those port holes  "yep remember them"    those square pieces  running down from above the torpedo bulge slope and down the flat ridge, they need sanding flat with the flat ridge but keeping on the slope as they represent drainage pipes.

(the areas I have marked within the red area  - the same for the whole length  of the hull)

The hull has been glued together.

the internal structure really helps keep the shape right. Glued them in first and let them set then glued the stern and slowly zipped it up to try get a smooth as possible join.

fitted together well with just a bit of an edge.

I used Tamiya filler. The Vallejo filler is great if you can wash off any excess and get it perfect before it goes off. But I find it’s too rubbery to sand. Tamiya is perfect for sanding but it’s a lot thicker

can start to work on some of the hull details next

Thats a great start with the hull  - if I remember  mine was quite good the way the two sides went together.

When you get to put the deck pieces down  I think mine had a slight gap that wasn't a real issue as the  wood stick on deck covered that.

Oh,    If your still going to have a go at doing some armour belts  I would do them before putting your prop shafts on  (like I didn't)   it will help tp get a smoother run - nothing in the way.

Good to know. But I’m only going to armour plate the sides of the hull and leave underneath alone. I think it will add a nice element to the hull.

No problem my friend,   I was abit ocdc  with mine  hence why I did underneath aswel, but the side will do just as good.

I’m definitely not OCD but probably should have been haha.

But been able to do a good amount over the weekend. Got most of the hull details on.

From what I could find the stern lower port holes were covered up before mid 1943.

I’ll wait till it’s painted before I add the barrels.

My last build really taught me what stages to spend lots of time on and what parts don’t matter so can already tell this build will be abit faster and hopefully better than my last one... fingers crossed!

Looking good,   good move on filling in the lower ports  at the stern, as they would have been a wee bit close to the  sea  from her extra weight,   I  see you are  doing her with the 6in  barbetts  on her waist,     cool  if oyu have the brass barrels  they will  super nice.

Thanks, I’ll keep her as close as I can to when I’m going for, seems from what I can find her 6 inch guns were taken out and concreted in during her next refit near the end of 1943, that’s also when the boot strap was thickened. Can’t find anything on if the camo pattern changed so will just use the box camo as it is meant to be the 1943 version anyway.

I did a few coats with tamiya spray on primer but ran out so did a few coats with just a spare grey paint.

went over it a few extra times to try get a slight unsmooth surface but dried pretty flat once the paint layers were added.

I’ll get all the edges nice and sharp and it should show through as a nice subtle effect. I was quite pleased

Also I’ve got so many shades of grey now that I’m not going to get more! So if the shades aren’t perfect then you will know why! But after all the washes and shading and weathering the original camo colours I use will be very different to the final colour so I’m ok with that.

Thanks, it’s always a bit of a gamble if you should do one more coat or should have done one less!
I’ve been riding the enthusiasm train with this build so making pretty good progress each day, I’ve a feeling eventually there will be a time where it doesn’t get touched for a few days but for now I’m pretty happy!

antifouling paint is on today, will grubby it up later on in the build once the hull is painted.

Armour plates are visible so wasn’t a waste of tape haha!

Looks fantastic!  Can I ask, when doing this technique to mark the plate runs, do you also mark the vertical edges of the plates?

Hey mate, I haven’t done anything about vertical panel lines or armour plates, might shade some in later but unsure. From pictures they are almost not visible so at this scale not sure if it would work? Some ships they are a really prominent feature but Warspite seems to hide hers quite well.
what are your thoughts on it?

Not sure.  My Shimakaze hull has the horizontal plating lines already built into the hull so I don't think I need to do the tape technique.  I was wondering about the horizontal plate lines though, as in whether I had to etch them into the hull.

Dont know if this might help  - it  looks like it shows the different  decks and frame point  locations  - perhaps  like  timber runs on a wood warship  - perhaps they might go to alternative frames for strength.

The way the Warspite's hull was constructed, (all the Elizabeth class battleships were) was plates bolted to frames from inside, so there would be no noticeable connections on the outside of the hull, horizontal strakes were laid on the hull consisting of vertical plates butted together and bolted to the individual frames. They alternated strakes, first were laid directly on the frames and the frames were built up between succeeding strakes, subsequent strakes were laid over the existing strakes to form the hull..... Vertical seams were cut to very tight tolerances and packed when bolted to the frames..... They would be hardly noticable ....

Subsequent improvements to the hull over the years, (like the torpedo bulges installed in her 1924 refit) were welded construction.......

As you can see from the image it is hard to pick out the vertical plate joints, they are there but even 50 feet away with a high res camera, (for it's day) they are very hard to see, smaller than the ropes holding up the scaffolding....
