Harry,

Agreed we move this topic to your build log. You're right the hangar walls will be very close to the circular railings

if you don't reduce the width of your hangars. Also the hangar walls will not be flush with the forward superstructure.

Some of the plastic parts to be placed later on the hangar walls will not even fit anymore. (In those Russian Youtube

videos of the Bismarck build they kept the hangars as is and just reduced the thickness of some of the plastic parts,

so they fit, not nice also). Amati took what was the easiest way out to them; reduce the hangar width and adjust the

size of the hangar door PE. Interesting to see what solution you come up with.

Hi Piet,

Thanks for the update.

I think, (Maybe🙂), that things will work out o.k

I intend to get a start tomorrow and will get some photos along the way.

With other components, (Plastic, etc), I have no idea which "Issues" they are in at present. The "Issues" that I have out and immediately at hand, are the two which deal with the majority of the major PE for these structures.

I agree that it will be interesting to see what works.... 🙂

Cheers....HOF.

Hi All,

Small update:

Boat/Launch Skids completed. These sit on the Main Hangar next to the Mast. (Not my best PE effort but will be o.k.)

(Added to the completed components organizer....)

Hi All,

I thought I'd ask the Forum regarding the Hanger conundrum....

I put he fronts together and taped in place for two reasons:

  • See how much material has to be removed
  • Mark on the reverse where the removal need to occur

Should I:

  • Remove the material
  • Cut a slot in the Funnel to accommodate

I took heaps of photos, so, if any of you have time, please have a look and give me some feedback.

(Remove overhanging PE or hide it.... 🙂)

I'm quite tempted to utilize the Stationary Disk Sander and support the PE on a piece of scrap wood. (Could be too harsh perhaps?)

Cheers....HOF.

Hi Harry,

How about removing material from the front PE only and moving the sliding door 2.2mm outward. The sliding door will no

longer be in the center, but is that a problem?

Hi Chap,

That's a damn good idea!! 🙂

I don't think that a Non-centered door would be a problem. I was thinking about the door detail and how I would replicate after trimming....

It also makes things far simpler.... Just thinking about it, I could utilize the inboard edge of the door as a template for trimming the front PE.

I also made a Template for the front, I realized the bottom angle would also need trimming by the same amount.

I'll de-bond the doors tomorrow and have a play with it.

Keep the ideas coming!! 🙂

Cheers and Regards,

Harry.

Hi All,

Piet's suggestion, (Above), worked out nicely!!

The Hangers are now the correct size and so is the front PE.

The best thing is that it all fits!! 🙂

The Hanger doors remain pretty much centered also.

A big thanks to Piet for his suggestion!!

I can now move on with the rest of the Hanger components.

Cheers....HOF.

Brilliant! I'm glad that worked out so easily. Did you use the disk sander? This PE very easily with a heavy pail of scissors.

Hi Rod,

I'm pleased that this worked out in the end....

I did not want to use the Disk Sander, a bit too "Heavy Handed" perhaps.

Just a small Corse file followed by a fine one to finish.

How's that painting?

Hi All,

Small update:

After three or so days I have completed the Port and Starboard Hangers. (PE anyway. (I identified the "Issue" that contain the Plastic elements for these and other sub-assemblies. I don't think I'll put these on just yet...))

I'm unsure what I'll go with next, I was leaning towards completing the Hull.

Also tempted with cladding the forward Superstructure.

Maybe Boats/Launches. (These remind me of things that used to be in Cereal packets that myself and my sister used to fight over.... 🙂

Cheers....HOF.

Anyway, a couple of photos of the Hangers, not perfect but good enough:

In my humble opinion you should complete the hull. While you are waiting for paint to dry you can spray some gray on the superstructure and hand paint the dark gray decks.  It looks like the hull is nearly done, so in a week's work you will have a half-completed model rather than a stack of half-completed parts.

Just look at how good your mast looks after a coat of paint - it's a mast-erpiece.

Thanks Rod,

I tend to agree with you.... 🙂

My intention is to begin with the Stern "Grab-Rails" today.

Not happy with a couple of Portholes so will drill the holes a little deeper.

I'll also get Pedestal locations marked out.

Hi All,

Still working on the "Beastie.... 🙂)

Small update:

Sanded down slightly "Proud" Portholes, (Emery Paper), and started on the Stern Grab Rails.

I was not happy at all with my efforts so removed them. I particularly do not like the paper templates provided.

Filled the holes that I had created and primed the sanded areas and manufactured another bunch of rails with longer "Legs'"

The Plan going forward is to make a drilling template for these items with hopefully more success. (I'll be able to see the holes on the primed surface and I located a 0.5mm drill for the rail "Legs."

I turned a couple of pedestals and sorted ot some suitable wood for a plinth.

(Both "Rimu" pronounced Reemoo. 🙂

(Gives me some "Thinking" time for developing a suitable template. If anyone has ideas, I'm all Ears!!)

Sorry, that's all for the mo.

Hi All,

Small update:

Developed a Jig for Stern Grab Rails.

Worked out o.k.

The Rails are not perfect and some need a little "Tweak" here and there but I am pleased this is done.

(In the photos, it looks like they protrude a bit too much but I think they are o.k. and will look better after a bit of a prime.

I can now concentrate on getting ready for a bit of paint and mount the beastie on it's pedestals.

Hmmm....

Looking at the photos, I may have to "Push" the Rails in just a tad.... 🙂

(Shouldn't bee too difficult, bit of de-bonder and a thinner spacer.)

They are 2.0mm out from the Hull currently.

Observations/Comments?

Close photos suggest some alignment but once painted they may look ok.

You can use a spacer while installing them let's say a  toothpick for example to make sure they are put evenly.

Thanks Chap.

Yup, the alignment is an issue on some of the Rails, agreed.

I was not happy, the more I thought about it....

I looked at Rod's, (rvchima), Bismarck build also for confirmation of my thoughts. (Thanks Rod 🙂)

So, I have "Pushed" the Rails in on the Starboard side using a 1.0mm strip of Walnut as a spacer between Rail and Hull, it looks much better and much more in scale....

I think that a "Prime" will hide any other misdemeanors.

Amazing what a millimeter will do!! 🙂

Live and learn I guess.

Anyway, something to start my day off tomorrow!!

I see some pencil lines of first set from left. That would be ideal for vertical alignment.

I guess a final check would be by checking the hulk from the stern to make sure they put in the correct depth. So basically we are talking for a 3 dimension check. Definitely bit more complicated task that bend and glue as it seems initially.

Not to mention that after some sets (or models) you will be able to put them by hand without the need of any tools.

Hi Harry,

Take a pair of small flat jaw pliers and give some of the rungs a twist so that they are all parallel. You might be able to bend them up/down a bit to adjust spacing. Hit them with a tiny drop of thin CA with a glue looper when you're done. They'll be fine.

I don't really want to introduce more holes otherwise I'll end up with "Swiss Cheese.🙂"

Harry,

I just discovered the gallery for your magnificent Cutty Sark build. Wow, what a beautiful model!

Cutty Sark Gallery by HOF00

Your profile says that you are also a cabinet maker. Did you make the cabinet that the Cutty Sark is in?

Thanks Rod,

I had forgotten that I had created a "Gallery" for the Cutty. 🙂

No, I'm not a Cabinetmaker, (I guess that you would call be retired from around 40 odd years as a Switching/Transmission Tech to part of the IT shop in a Bank.),  but I like to "Practice" Cabinetmaking.... Yes, I did make the Cutty Cabinet. Made from NZ Rimu, very difficult to source apart from recycled timber.)

The cabinet was the easy part of the build!! 🙂

So, progress is a little slow on the Bismarck at the mo, I'm still tossing up the idea of making a Brass drilling template for the Stern Grab Rails or just leave them and move on. (After reducing the gap between Hull and Rail, they are much more acceptable and look even more so with a dose of primer, I'll "Ruminate" on this for a little longer.... 🙂)

Cheers and Regards,

Harry.

I just saw your Cutty Sark in the gallery also. Wow, what a masterpiece! Both the model and the display case are magnificent! Great job, Harry.

You should add a link for it under your signature so others can find it too. What a treasure!

Hi All,

Very small update:

Had a think about the Stern Grab Rails and decided to leave well alone, They are not perfect and I figured that if I was to remove them and re-drill, I could end up with a big mess!!

I think that they are acceptable as they stand with the gap between Rail and Hull 1.0mm

(Once the Hull is Painted, (Soon), I am thinking that any error/s will "Blend" into the overall model. The only ones to know will be myself and anyone reading this build log....)

Attached my attempt at turned Pedestals and Plinth, but will remove these for final Hull finishing/painting.

(It always seems a bit "Criminal" to drill holes into a perfectly good Hull.... 🙂)

So, the plan for tomorrow is to perform the final prep of the Hull, attach Propeller Shafts/Hubs followed by a final prime, that should keep me occupied enough for a few hours anyway.

(I'll get the Airbrush dusted off and serviceable also.)

Cheers....HOF.
