Things like this are builder's choice in my opinion depending on what you're building for. I used full length planks the first time, I don't regret it but I would do it more historically accurate next time. The shorter plank lengths may even be easier to work with.

2nd Planking question (I'm asking simply because I don't know). I think all would concur that a first time builder's project is going to have it's share of boo-boos etc.. However while I've been building, I am reviewing others builds and noticing things that pertain to authenticity. Decking and planking come to mind first. As we all could guess, a 100' ship was not made with 100' planks and decking. These double planked models can get away with the first planking being all one piece planks. Authenticity can then be done on the second planking, no? My question to you is should I attempt the authentic planking on this my first build, or stick with the kit "one piece" planks? Your recommendations that is.

That depends on you!

How much work do you want to do?

Planks from that time period we’re rarely over 25 feet long… some maybe up to 30 feet but rarely over.

Planking to historical accuracy will include splice patterns too.

Let me know if I can help further!

Thanks Lyle, I’ll take you up on that. As I look at others work, the authenticity is one of the things that grabs me. I salvaged the 1st planking… (I think) think I’ll go for it. Would one of the plank cutter tools be in order? Best place to read up on plank splice patterns?

Lots of good info on this site.

Go to the different sections and find the planking section.

Since I’m not familiar with your particular model, I can’t suggest a pattern but typically a 3 or 4 shift pattern is good to work with.

As VT mentioned, here is the tools to start with:

Have you corrected the garboard plank?  Any planking will be difficult without that happening.

For LN I’d advise you just do a full length plank. A shift butt pattern on so small a hull would be aggravation you don’t need first time around. You can see my Cheerful build to see one, but on my LN I just did full run for the reason I note.

My advice anyway.

Glenn

Lyle,

What do you mean by splice patterns?  I am aware of butt joints, drop strakes, top and butt planking of the wales, etc, but spliced planking is a new one for me.  Thanks!

Hi All,

Another newb question. Got out the walnut planking that came in the Amati kit. As you can see, 3 noticeable shades of color. On the first build... random picks for the next piece?

I think many people try to group them by color. Are you planning on painting below the waterline white? If so maybe count how many planks you need to cover that distance (probably at the stern?) and see if you can get closely colored planks for that section. Assuming you paint the rest white it doesn’t matter after that. I wouldn’t get too hung up on it though, it’ll look good regardless.

I used mine at random… simply because that would be how it would’ve been done.

Of course, it wasn’t with Walnut!

Again, a builders choice IMHO.

Dave, I started following your build today. I am on my first as well, Dapper Tom. I noted you are home ported in Stanwood. 18 months ago, I shifted colors from NAVSTA Everett living in Lake Stevens WA. to NAVSTA Rota living in El Puerto de Santa Maria, Spain. I miss the PNW, Halibut and family, but the food here is awesome! Good luck on the build Sir!!!

I mostly use a plane to shape the planks. It gives much sharper edges than sandpaper, and much better control than a knife. Knifes tend to follow the grain of the wood.

I hold the plane in one hand, and drag the plank with the other.

I recently learned a new trick, place the plane in a wise. Then you can use both hands to control the plank. Especially useful for bevelling.

Progress... I think. Started the 2nd planking. I glued the 1st 2 top planks on prebent with PVA and clamps. I got done and could see daylight in a couple spots, nothing major, but that's not the tight fit we all strive for. Glued the 3rd and 4th plank using the prebend and CA. Now we're cooking with oil! 😀 However, as I look at the bottom of the 4th plank... am I going to have to chamfer an edge of the next plank or will the Chuck bending" take care of a gap? I see a gap coming with out chamfer. Something that can be sanded out?

Also have one Garboard plank in next to the keel. Should I put in a second, before laying out for the planking?

Ok Fellers,

Ran into my first “how am I going to do this” moment. Tell me there’s a method to carve out all the gun and view ports in the bullworks, other than a mini file set. DE4394C5-4E91-4F77-9B50-71583F124CE6.thumb.jpeg.8b8b36eba6b1049a16194f3bc02aa711.jpeg

The way to do it is to cut them out with a #11 blade as you plank each row. It will be much harder now but you can still do if you’re careful and go slow. It’s a good idea to think these thinks out in advance. If you rush it you’re going to split the planking.

Glenn

Dave, the only course I see is to use a fret saw. At least you have a hole to put the blade through.

Me and Mr. 11 are buds. No blood… I can only get better (I hope).😆

Very nicely done!

Sometimes the instructions don't lay things out correctly for the build. I always look over the plans and make sure that I do anything I can to make a better finish easier. For example, on my Bounty build I getting ready to install the Mizzen pin rails around where the mast goes... I noticed on the plans that there are 13 pins and 10 double blocks that go around the mast into the deck. If I put the rails in first it may make it much more difficult to do those blocks! Thinking of doing the blocks first!

Looking good Dave!

Great success!!  I am almost ready for the second planking on my build. I am still working through the paint on the bulwarks. One more coat I think. I have not glued the upper transom piece on. The instructions are very confusing about that part. It looks like it doesn’t really matter the order from your build though.

I decided to plank the inner bullworks, and possibly plank the deck before starting the 2nd planking. The plans show (4) 1 X 4s on the inside of the bullworks. As you can see by the picture, I have a sliver of inner bullworks not covered (which I’m going to have to do). Is this normal? Did I possibly boo-boo putting the false deck on?78C94374-E622-4B78-BDA4-9D801529B91D.thumb.jpeg.cdd5b48fc86efacafe0064b99fac8d8a.jpeg
