hello from the Philippines!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

I go by Kale, a teenager from the Philippines.

I have always liked ships and boats, and after some research on what kit I should purchase for my first model, I bought the ModelShipways Shipwright series. I'll be building them all the next couple months, and hope to continue building more models in the future. Knowing how to sail, I hope that my knowledge with boats will help make the building and rigging process easier, or at least help me in some way. I don't have a solid plan for what I'd like to build after them, but once I have enough experience with kits, I plan on creating ship models out of recycled materials---a goal in the far future. I'm very excited and eager to learn more about modeling as I go through this. Mistakes will be made, all in exchange for wisdom. If you guys have any tips for a newbie, I'd love to hear them.

Welcome! Both my parents grew up in the Philippines, one in Manila and one down in Mindanao and Cebu.

I think you've made a very smart choice in starting with a series of smaller models that will help you build skills. Many of the tips given to new builders attempt to nudge them away from getting in over their heads, buying too many tools or too-fancy models. I love the idea of using recycled materials and the path you've chosen will help get you there. Please share your journey with us!

Mabuhay Kale! Spent four memorable years in Quezon City decades ago. The Model Shipwright series is a great way to learn the hobby of ship model making. After that perhaps try your hand at a Banca.

Hi Kale,

Super happy to see a youngster join and make a very wise choice on his first endeavors!   I would love to visit your country again one day, been a long time since I was there.  (55 years) I have fond memories of a nice little bar in Olongapo with a couple shipmates from the SS Pioneer Myth and bottles of San Miguel beer.  .  (Pic below, me in the middle)

Welcome to the site, indeed you are taking the correct approach. Start simple and keep the frustration down, after all it is a hobby (for most of us). Hope to see you getting more involve. Myself I am a long time sailor, learned to sail in the North Sea, migrated to the Oregon Coast and finally to the more sedated reservoirs and lakes in Idaho.
