Hi Mates,

Minor update, completed building the false carriages, and began installing them along with their cannons.

I needed to adjust the size of each dummy carriage in order to allow entry and proper positioning within the hull frame insert. As I’ve noted each gun port is somewhat different in size. Hence you see them on that pic pic. in their proper order for installation after adjusting their relative sizes.

I also learned (for future builds) that I will pre-drill the dummy cannon holes into the false inside framing BEFORE installing and gluing these on the inside of the hull.

Turns out that some of my post-hole drilling was not well centered for some of the dummy cannons, had to go back in and adjust many of the holes. AND one of my framing bits fell away (too much pressure with the drill) Grrrrrr.

I rattled the ship sideways and the piece sort-of re-appeared near its proper place. After much finagling, tweezers and gluing it managed to kind of be usable again.

But for that dummy cannon I had to use a lot of wood extensions to create proper spacing coming through the port. Hmmmm

 Now onto the covers.

Thanks for your likes, comments or just looking in.

Cheers,

Michael

Hello Michael,

Happy New Year!

Glad to see that you were able to salvage that broken piece. I almost had that happen to me!

I was going to add a comment about maybe getting the gun port lids on first, but I see from the pictures that you have the hinges predrilled and ready to go. Good thinking!

Have fun with the other side!

Great job,

Frank

Hi Michael:

I've just been browsing your build here and I've always been fascinated by the amount of intricate detail in this ship. You sir are doing a splendid job with her. I'm looking forward to seeing her progress if you don't mind my popping in and pulling up a stool.  B)

Cheers

Hi Mates,

Buck, Lawrence, Roger, Edwin, George, as well as the like clicks, and to those just passing through (:-)

Thanks soooo much for your really "over the top" kind remarks-so encouraging

BUT I must say that this part of the build, the false carriages idea, are a result of seeing Frank's (fmodajr) beautiful work on his Vasa. He, wisely installed these very early in his build, and those pics. kept gnawing at me. I knew that I needed to do something about those "missing" details.

So Frank -- thanks !!! As they say copying someone else's work is the best form of flattery.

PS: So we're both heating up after our west coast freeze of well,,,,,,+40º last week (:-)  supposed to be 75º in my neck of the woods on Tuesday.

Hmmm may have my first outdoor cigar of the year (Admiral does not tolerate them indoors)--don't  blame her. Though I very infrequently enjoy one in any case.

Hi Michel

I love reading you build log of the Wasa,

I will start building the Wasa as soon as my current build of the Prins Willem (Corel) , a Dutch east Indiaman of 1651, is finished.

I have painted the model and made a lot of changes to the kit after studying the original model in the Rijks Museum in Amsterdam to make it look more historical correct.

I ordered the Wasa (Corel) last week, I hope to get it next week.

Andy,

Thanks for looking at my build log, very nice of you. I appreciate your nice thoughts.

Good luck with your Corel Wasa. Looking at your gorgeous Prins Willem, the Wasa should be a lot of fun artistically for you. Have you been to the Vasa museum?

PS: I have not updated my build log in a while I should post some updates very soon.

Regards,

Michael

Michael,

I haven't visited the Wasa museum yet, I hope to visit it next year.

In the mean time I have downloaded many foto's from the museum website (both the original ship and the reconstruction 1:10 model) and I ordered the book: "Vasa A Swedish Warship Fred Hocker 2011" as preparation for starting the build myself .

Andy,

In case that you did not already know about these two sources.

http://www.wasadream.com/modeles/Clayton/wasaclaytonenglish.html (Clayton's build is world famous (well in our comunity)

http://www.wasadream.com/Index/indexenglish.html     (Wasadream has many many photos as well)

The museum has also released Vasa I, with Vasa II "soon" to be published. Fred Hocker has noted that Vasa II will be with the model builder in mind, whereas Vasa I is historical in nature along with the bulk of the very interesting book having to do with the search, resurrection and its preparation for the museum.

Cheers,

Michael

Hi Mates,

Thanks for still dropping by for a look, and for “likes” as well as those nice comments, all much appreciated.

I have not posted an update for a while, as I needed a mental break from the shipyard. I really enjoy the hobby and only want it to be always fun, and not a job; if you get my meaning. So with the positive energies returned started to work on installing the cannon lids.

I envy those of you who enjoy your builds on a daily basis, so nice. That also allows for moving on to the next build -- Hmmmm…..

Some thoughts:

••There is a bit of glue visible on the attached lid hinges. I will mount them all in full open positions so the hinges, let alone anything else will not be visible at the rear of the lids. So I was not as cautious as usual.

It is probably overkill on my part; I could have just as easily just glued the lids to the hull just above the cannon ports and be done with it.

••The most forward lid’s openings are partially blocked by the bowsprit framing; I may just pull out those two cannons and keep the lids closed.

••Corel does not indicate that these two cannon ports are needed, but I added them during my later research on this build. Had I moved the openings further aft, they would have been too close to the next openings along the hull. Oh well.

After I install and properly position all of the lids I’ll post some completed pics.

Cheers,

Michael
