Paint for representing galvanized metal

Canute

Recommended Posts

Don't think this is a ship model worthy topic, but I need to paint some surfaces as galvanized steel. Opinions are as varied as the modelers I ask locally, albeit the actual model builders are much less than the folks asked. Anyway, what would you describe the shade as? I've used light blue gray on structures for freshly constructed corrugated metal, but the galvanized I'm interested in is the bare metal exposed by failing paint. I've seen light grays, fresh steel and dark grays. Any ideas, forum mates?

Look up “faux metallic” miniature painting techniques on YouTube.

That is how I usually represent bare metal.

Galvanized metal isn't bare metal... Galvanizing is a zinc coating to prevent corrosion....

When freshly applied (dipped) it is usually a greenish grey tone with shiny flecks in the surface.... When sprayed on it is usually a medium to dark grey in color without flecks....

It's a difficult color to replicate cause the environment makes a huge difference in how it presents as a color...

Ken, I would say go with your gut on that and when it looks right it's done.... I haven't found a formula to mix it as a specific color....

Like Egilman explained, the galvanized steel has only a superficial coating, which appeares relatively coarse, shining in different slightly dull steel colors. Depending the scale, I would airbrush some of AK's Extreme Metal stainless steel, which has a slightly bluish tint and then dab some steel wax from AK's True Metal range on with a sponge.

I think that would work for a painted surface as long as the blue tone is muted.... A dipped surface I would try a muted greenish/grey with the true metal daubing over it.... (light daubing, very drybrushish type to represent the flecks)

Found this step by step video:

The results look a teeny bit dark to my eye, but perhaps by using a slightly lighter base metal colour, it might work.

Gentlemen, thanks for your replies. This is supposed to be a boxcar roof, slathered with car cement (asphalatum) or paint and the paint failing due to the environment (soot/cinders/dust, etc) I think daubing  or spraying a steel paint on the spots for worn out paint, with rust in a few spots, will be appropriate.

A late reply to this topic, but I have found Vallejo carrying all sorts of various "metal" paint. Got myself a "exhaust manifold" paint from them recently. A quick search didn't yield in any galvanised steel paint.

Per, yes they make a lot of "metal" paints, as do several other brands. "Galvanized" color seems to be a very subjective color. Trying to define it will have 6 opinions among 5 modelers. 😉
