I was going to originally stain the whole thing dark until I saw how perfect the stand matched the ship's colors. Sometimes I luck out.

By the way, the moulding is doll house moulding.

I went to start on the yards and decided to take an accounting of exactly how much material I would need and how much Constructo gave me. Well...good old Coinstructo gave me material  to within 2-4mm of what is needed, The sawdust will exceed that!  So, I just went out and bought a lot more stuff since goodness knows how many mistakes I will make along the way.

Rich, the main issue I had with the spars was learning how to turn the ends down to toothpicks without breaking them. I actually used my full size lathe in doing them. Made turning them to size quicker once I learned how to handle them.

I spent the day going over the logistics of switching over to building and rigging the spars (yards). Good old Constructo gave me the exact amount of eye bolts to make the foot ropes. I can't drop one and lose it on the floor, now. I've also had to order more micro drill bits since I broke so many up until now. In checking the plans I realized if I placed the holders Constructo designed for the studding sails spars they would extend only a tiny bit, so I've redrawn the plans so they'll extend enough to actually hold a studding sail if I want to install one or more. Lastly I broke out my wood working gear so I can manufacture the spars. I do not have a lathe, so I shall taper the spars with a plane and sand paper. It's time consuming, but I can get good results.

Advice I received was to buy some brass wire and make rings and eyebolts. You need many, if you learn to bend them, and it is easy, there is no fear of dropping one.

If you look at the beading section of the hobby store, or at Amazon, you can find some small round nose pliers made to make rings of various sizes. They are well worth having. I used many more rings and eyebolts than were in the kit.

Hi Rich, yeah, making wire eyes is easy, cheap, and keeps you working instead of spending your time on your knees with a magnifying glass trying to find something that belongs to The Carpet God's.....

Hola Rich:

I dont have a lathe either but I used instead a hand drill fix to a support to shape the spars and other pieces:

I'm now in the eyebolt business with the purchase of round nose pliers. I loved the way all the ladies in the jewelry making department eyed me as I shopped in their domain.

With all that friction you could start a fire! Nice homemade lathe. I'll try it.

Too funny Rich, my wife makes jewelry herself and more than one occasion I have leaned over and said..Hmm, those are interesting - can I try those a sec?   Now of course she has learned - yes but am I getting them back or should i just order another one? heheeh

Get a lot of great tools and ideas from all over =)

Hola Rich:

The outer piece is only as a guide (it is not tight so there is no friction), you really hold the piece with the sandpaper

Well it feels real good to get back to woodworking again making all the yards...but as soon as I reach for string, line or yarn and blocks....I turn into a big pile if incompetent mush! I've got to read and practice how to do rigging before I can progress from here. Well...nobody said it was easy.

The yards look great Rich!  I'm sure you'll do fine when you start your rigging. Lots of guides right here on this site. The main thing is, after you do a step, if you're not happy with it, do it over until you are. Because if you're not happy with it, that's when it stops being fun.  ;)

It is looking great. The rigging is more intimidating than it is difficult. Just like everything else you have already done, it is just one step after the other. Before you know it, you will have them all done.

I have to keep coming up with new tools....this time it's a lamp where I can let the glue dry on the blocks on my yards. They need to hang down while the glue sets. My Admiral hasn't seen this one yet.

Here's a "dry run" for the first two yards. They still need a coat of varnish and then rig their sails before installing them permanently. There's a lot left to do, but at least now I know what's ahead of me for rigging the sails.

Hi Rich, I like your wood stand for your Conny. Thanks for the Kudo's on mine, greatly appreciated. I have an actual rough slab of Red Oak (I think) which was cut off of the real Bowsprit on the Morgan during her restoration. I plan to use it and mount both my Morgan and the Constitution on it. I just have to figure out how I want the finished product to look. I'm making some Dolphins and might use them to cradle the ships...not sure yet. Keep us the good work.

Hi Rich,

Perhaps I'm a bit late on this but here is my method for making eye bolts and oar locks. Got this

from a fellow modeler who makes hundreds of these as all of his models are scratch built. Most

of my eyes are from .010 brass wire. Hooks are made from brass wire of different diameters

depending on the eye size needed.

I've been dropping in on your thread only occasionally as my builds are mostly steam powered

river boats. Also, your work on the rigging is to damned intimidating. My anxiety level would be

over the top.
