With the room completely, cleaned, repainted and reorganized. There is time for Mary again.

The cannon deck has been provided with planks in the places where the stairs will come. And has been given a coat of diluted and polished Tamya paint. Little or nothing of all this will be visible later.

The railing of the upper deck is ready.

Color test for the hull.
It is not known for sure whether the original ship was white below the waterline. It could be, but it has never been further investigated.

To maximize the effect of the treenails, oil will be applied to the hull.
I had some walnut oil left as a test. This is much better than the very diluted Tamya paints.
Walnut oil gives a nice result on wood, but you have to repeat the treatment after a few year. So it will be Danish oil or Tung oil.

This is stunning. Your work and attention to detail are truly amazing. I've been following this from the beginning....albeit quietly. This ship is on my to-build list. I'm not brave enough to attempt a scratch build....yet.

thank you all
Meanwhile painting has started. And we just got back from vacation.

First mowing the lawn, weeding, cleaning the car, refilling the fridge...

Applying masking tape to the clinker planking is a hopeless task.
so everything will be "free hand" painting.

Yay for painting! I think painting adds another level that inlays, whether wood or...gulp...paper, just can't provide.

First of all, thanks for following, likes, and the nice comments.

Vacation over, so back to work on Mary (some of us).

As mentioned before, applying masking tape to clinker planking is not convenient.
And as rightly noted, they didn't have masking tape back then either. So everything is drawn and painted freehand.

Materials used: Tamiya paint, paint markers and Danish oil.

20240825_130449_1280.jpg.708ed4d4ebdae910ccc77b1a3be715fd.jpg

If you are right-handed, it is easiest to always paint the left line.

20240801_112645_1280.thumb.jpg.5ba6a1f11dbbf69cef6ab1cbde75a868.jpg

The colors are applied step by step. The cover of the book serves as a guide, but was not followed completely. Port side serves as a test side. So starboard still needs to be done.

That's where we are now
All "untreated" wooden parts are provided with a layer of Danish oil.

No white below the waterline.
The original may or may not have been painted white.
None of the ships on the Antony roll have a white underside.
This is how the tree nails are most visible.

Yes, agree completely with @druxey. The slightly faded colours give it a more aged, authentic feel. I'm a big fan of black micro makers for outlining when warranted. They work really well. She looks fantastic.

And.... I've never put a waterline on any ship I've built, and I've never regretted it. I think it would hide your beautiful work....which would be a shame. That's just my opinion.

Beautiful paintwork! I know how difficult it is to paint small details within the established lines.

Recently I saw a report on TV about the excavation of the remains of the Mary Rose that have yet to be found. It emerged that they may also have found remains of the bow, at some distance from the wreck. So who knows what the results will be.

I certainly hope so. It might finally resolve the uncertainty about the shape of her forecastle.

thanks for the comments and likes.

Maybe a bit harshly said 😇, but.

Actually, they can leave those bow parts on the bottom of the sea for me.

Imagine if it turns out that the entire bow of my model is wrong. :default_wallbash:

Some more information about the fore castle would indeed be nice.

OK, when can I expect the first results for the foreship?🤔

Don't now.

There is no time table for this build.

Sorry

The starboard side is painted
And the threaded rods that make the rear castle narrower at the top are back in their place (I am too wide at the top and otherwise I will have problems with the standing rigging)

Now the outer standards, with a lot of fitting and measuring and cutting...

The colours on the transom do not want to work 🤢 After 3 different schemes, which did not work. the "short pain" was chosen.
A new start, with a scheme that will look more like the Anthony roll

The good news is it's not concrete. It's just paint. 🙂 You have this in hand. Of that, I am certain.

Concrete...

No problem, an 88mm round from my Tiger II will do the trick.

Probably ( or certainly ? ) not by the book....

Adding clinker planks on the surface involved and painting accordingly the quarterdeck might help but as mentioned I'm afraid this option is in opposition with the original plans ?

Tiger II ? I'm amazed by the weathering effects you can admire on plastic modelling fora ( and diorama's )

Kind regards

BTW.  This Patrick is 32 years younger in the photo than he is now.

'Sorry to be off topic, but there IS a tiger (and others) that one can see (perhaps for free one day of the year) in the U.S.

There used to be an extensive tank collection outdoors at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland (USA), but in 2012 everything was moved to Fort Lee Virginia (temporarily) ... and ended up in the U.S. Armor and Cavalry Collection in Mort Moore Georgia - said to be largest collection of historic armored vehicles in the world.  It is NOT open to the public in general (bummer), but has an open house at least once a year - the last one being September 7th this year. So its not all bad news.

The Aberdeen collection was deteriorating outdoors anyway, but while still at Aberdeen I could climb inside several of the big German tanks - and a picture of one is below that I was inside ... I recognize the hit on the gun mantle.  There are tanks assembled from a number of locations now under roofs, and many have been stabilized with new paint - probably the best for future viewing and reference.
