Here we go with my second military aircraft build. Looking forward to this one and hoping to use what I learnt from building the Lancaster and Titanic.

Although he’s just started, @AJohnson is working on the 1:24 Typhoon, and he’s built a few other nice Airfix kits on here too, you may wish to check out his builds.

I also have this Spitfire IXc in my stash, just not the time to do them; building a boat at them moment. But I will follow along and see what is involved in this kit for later.

So, a bit of an update, we're underway with the cockpit. I'm using a combination of the instructions and a build log featured in the Spitfire review and build magazine that you can buy with the model from Airfix.

I've decide to drill out the holes in the bulkheads and airframes, as per the magazine article and then I've started to get some paint on.

I can't believe AIRFIX would not have drilled the holes in the bulkheads. At that scale, it makes no sense to not do it.

I’m not sure if the actual size of the parts, but it could be that the number of holes didn’t lend itself well to the injection moulding process. They may had had them to begin with, but the test shots may have had a high rejection rate.

So lots of hand painting of the various cockpit items this evening. There is loads of nice detail in this kit I have to say. The cockpit panels are glossed as well so I'll have a go at some light weathering next before assembling it all together.

After struggling with my Lancaster during painting and scratching it a bit when doing either the top or the bottom, I've treated myself to this.

All laser printed wood and self assemble. Suitable for 1/72 up to 1/24 as I bought the larger plane extra pack.

 

Just need to get the fuselage now to try it out!

Found an interesting read about a spitfire for sale last year with lots of photos. Might be useful for reference although it's a 'b' not a 'c' so I'll have to see what the differences are.

I had a read of your link, and then found that the Spitfire sadly failed to sell....  Fully restored Spitfire that shot down Focke-Wulf 190 fails to sell at auction - https://www.forces.net/technology/aircraft/fully-restored-spitfire-shot-down-focke-wulf-190-fails-sell-auction  But some interesting info contained in the link.

Making good progress and trying many things for the first time, as I'm still a very new modeller. I had a go at pin washing the panels and also put in Eduards seat harness after adding a touch of brass paint to it. I also had a go a making the seat look a bit orn. I'm pleased with it so far.

Tomorrow, if I have time, I might try a bit of dry brushing, another thing I've been learning about (YouTube is my best friend at the moment!) to add a bit of light wear to the instruments and interior items. I also have had a change of heart with the scheme I was going for, I've decided to use scheme A which has the invasion stripes now and this meant that I had to change the throttle lever, according to the instructions, so that was some more fiddly painting to be done.

This would definitely take a backdrop for a Lancaster diorama to the next level....😉

Not too much today, we've been out looking at cars for my parents in law and arranging a motorbike CBT test for one of our sons (makes me proud!) 

 

A bit of hand painting and a quick air spray of paint and then gloss later on the fuselage.

And a final update for the weekend.....

Did some weathering in the cockpit and on the fuselage panels and then put that all together and started on the lower wing.

Not completely happy with the fit of the cockpit into the fuselage, there's a small gap just in front of the cockpit where the halves join. I think this is my error and not the kit, I might not have exactly seated the cockpit correctly but it was already fixed in at this point and I didn't want to try to take it apart. But I think it's going to be ok, a little bit of filler will be required I think.

So after a lot of sprue glue/rubbing down and polishing I think I'm almost happy with the gap that I ended up with on the nose.

And now the wings internals are built and sprayed with sea grey for the wheel housings and then metallic silver for the internals and the top of the wings where you will be able to see the guns and ammo. I've decided to leave the gun hatches open. I'm deliberating what to do with the engine, I've seen some builds that have left it fully exposed, there's a lot of detail that is a shame to cover, but I'm thinking I might put the top on and leave the sides off.

I've now painted the guns and ammo and they're fitted. Starting to look like a plane!

Engine underway. Quite fiddly, and I'm wondering if I can make the Rolls Royce wording stand out a bit.  But it is really detailed, good job by Airfix.
