So I need some advice- the daggerboard has both a sort of ring with tongues to tie the rigging that lifts it up, and a ratchet to hold it in place. Does anyone have any idea how I can craft that ratchet? Any common parts or something, or any other method? I guess I could try to carve it out of brass stock with my Dremel but I'm nervous that it'd be difficult and messy and not look neat.

I didn't put that detail on my model, so I don't have a tried and true method, but it looks like some time with a square file and a piece of brass should do the trick.

It might be easier to fabricate it by soldering small square stock to sheet, using the edge of a  steel square for rib spacing,  make it wider than you need and cut it to width.

Also, if you want much easier fabrication and a material that will still look good once painted, you can glue together small styrene strips, just like the brass above.

I don't know if you have a local source for "evergreen" or an equivalent  company that makes small styrene stock for architectural models and model railroads, but it would be an easy alternative, or maybe even a way to make a quick experimental prototype or two before making the brass part...

I thought of using plastic or evergreen (i bought a whole bunch a while back and still have some) but I was trying to think of a way to make it out of brass. I guess it'll have to be the old files and brass.

Looking at the thickness and size of the centre board, I would think that filing up a piece of brass wold be the best. perhaps a small piece of brass railroad rail, some of the older H0 track was brass before nickel rail became standard.

Although evergreen styrene strip would very likely be the easiest method and probably indistinguishable from brass or wood, I shy away from plastic on these wooden boat builds. I'd go with brass.  Don't get me wrong- I build plenty of plastic  and cardstock models and think they are fantastic,  Maybe I'm being puritanical or snobbish but a wooden boat needs to be a wooden boat! Unless you want it to be mixed media.  How's that for a definite maybe?

Well, grinding the part out of brass stock it is! I couldn't find any brass strips at the jewellery store, but they had some thick wire. I had someone there put it through a vise to get it a bit flattened. Once I got home, I tried carving the notches. I kept not really succeeding until I built this jig- which I'm quite proud of! Now the part is almost done...

Beautiful work.  I love all the detail, which I guess is why I love models in general.  The closer you look, the more you see.

Hi Altalena it is great to see more progress on your model. the sides of the centerboard trunk are an interesting design, is this decoration or is there some other reason?

It's a decoration, and can be seen on the original Annie's trunk as well.

I have to say that your metalwork was in my mind when i was trying my hand at some for the first time, Michael! That little marine engine is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. Also, is the pilot cutter officially finished or are you taking a break from it?
