Hi Anton

Funny you say that about the weld lines and the details possible at this scale...I was actually thinking that you have the unique ability to make it more realistic than any other modeller can because you have access to the real thing.

For instance, a scrape or dent on the real ship can also be modelled on your ship. A loose door, or a dented and/or rusted fitting can also be replicated. Same goes for a poster, or a flag, a sign, or whatever, can be done. That way, it's almost as if you've shrunken the real thing onto your work table.

No one else could make it as individualistic and unique as you can.

Cheers

Patrick

I'm contemplating building the interior chart house, engine room and galley and maybe other internal areas of the ship to display with the model. Though I won't do these until the model itself is finished. Might make for an interesting display ?

Felt like some painting this evening. Painted the stainless steel handles, hatch opening surrounds, battery box cover, galley vent canvas and the black rubber seals on the hatches.

Thanks for your comments Nils and Patrick. Her deck is starting to look busy, and amazingly she has no guns! Haha

Two more boxes done. The first is the 'spud' locker (potato locker). The coaming over the door is extra protection against wash from getting inside. There is also a fluted back. Originally this was to allow air flow, though water would get in and the spuds and onions that where kept inside would be water damaged, so a plate was welding inside as a backing. To solve the air flow in hot weather we open the door and its latched open.

The second is for our backup gen set. The gen set slides out on the starboard side on a secured rack which locks in place with the help of two 'lackies' (elastic) straps either side. Surprisingly works very well. I think I've pulled it off.

Last box for today... 5 more to go! This is the access hatch to the lazzerette, which is the space directly below the poop deck. Down here you'll find our paint stores and steering mechanism.

The small box item with two circular bits, is the on/off control for the rear capstan which will sit just foreword and to the port side of this hatchway.

Main saloon skylights now made up. These are purely a skylight and we leave these open about 90% of the time to allow airflow. There is a mesh grate which is to stop people falling through at deck level which I've yet to make. These skylights are only closed while alongside at night, during heavy weather and wearing or tacking as they impede access to the fore braces when open.

Not sure how you do it, Anton. It takes me a whole day to make one of those parts. You do it faster and more accurately than I could ever dream of doing!

Maybe I need more tools to compensate!

Hi Keith, I don't think you need more tools, you should see what I have.... It's very little haha. I find working with plastic very easy, and I have a large stash of various sheets, strips, tube, angle strips etc which does make life easier when in need of a certain size. I'm sure if all this was done in wood it would take me a lot longer to cut and assemble, and then to make it look like steel :)

Thought a break from making boxes was in order! Have three wooden deck boxes plus the helm station, another box!

Had some stashed mahogany planks which I'm going to use for the capping rail. On Leeuwin the capping rail is Jarrah (an Australian red hard wood) and the colour and grain from the mahogany works well in this scale. I'll be using this for the pin rails also.

To get the extreme curves I'll be doing the tried and tested - well for me anyway - soak and heat. To get this first forward curve, I soaked the plank in warm water for 30mins and using an iron slowly manipulated the plank to a suitable curve. Looks good for a test run I think.

Little history where the name Leeuwin comes from. It is Dutch and it means "lioness".

Leeuwin ("Lioness", also spelt "Leeuwine" in some Dutch East India Company (VOC) documents) was a Dutch galleon that discovered and mapped some of the southwest corner of Australia in March 1622.

The south-west corner of Australia was subsequently referred to by the Dutch as 't Landt van de Leeuwin ("The Land of the Leeuwin") for a time, subsequently shortened to "Leeuwin's Land" by the English. This name Leeuwin still survives in the name of Cape Leeuwin, the most south-westerly point of the Australian mainland, so named by Matthew Flinders in December 1801.

The sail training ship STS Leeuwin II, based in Fremantle, Western Australia, is named in honour of the Leeuwin, although the II refers not to the original Leeuwin but to a yacht that was already entered in Australia's ship's register under the name.

Current Built: Zeehaen 1639, Dutch Fluit from Dutch explorer Abel J. Tasman

Unofficial motto of the VOC: "God is good, but trade is better"

Many people believe that Captain J. Cook discovered Australia in 1770. They tend to forget that Dutch mariner Willem Janszoon landed on Australia’s northern coast in 1606. Cook never even sighted the coast of Western Australia).

Little history where the name Leeuwin comes from. It is Dutch and it means "lioness".Leeuwin ("Lioness", also spelt "Leeuwine" in some Dutch East India Company (VOC) documents) was a Dutch galleon that discovered and mapped some of the southwest corner of Australia in March 1622.The south-west corner of Australia was subsequently referred to by the Dutch as 't Landt van de Leeuwin ("The Land of the Leeuwin") for a time, subsequently shortened to "Leeuwin's Land" by the English. This name Leeuwin still survives in the name of Cape Leeuwin, the most south-westerly point of the Australian mainland, so named by Matthew Flinders in December 1801.The sail training ship STS Leeuwin II, based in Fremantle, Western Australia, is named in honour of the Leeuwin, although the II refers not to the original Leeuwin but to a yacht that was already entered in Australia's ship's register under the name.Marc

Wikipedia is almost right. Cape Leeuwin is in fact named in honour of the possible Dutch ship Leeuwin of 1622. Mathew Flinders a British naval officer circumnavigated and mapped Australia and rounded Cape Leeuwin in 1801. The south west cape of the then called New Holland wasn't actually called leeuwin's land by the English. Flinders named the cape in honour of the Dutch as the name Leeuwin's land (in Dutch obviously) had been noted. As an interesting side note, if it wasn't for Flinders we might be speaking French over here as at that time a French explorer was also in the process of mapping this part of Australia.

Correct about the Leeuwin II name but it wasn't a yacht but a fishing vessel. Leeuwin was originally to be named Leeuwin, though when the ship was in survey and to be registered, the name Leeuwin was already in use by a commercial vessel, so II was added.
