Mike, The brass colored ones are older. The current releases are all the stainless colored material, which I agree is much harder than brass. It's probably also cheaper to manufacture... The film instruments in general on Eduard sets get sandwiched between two pieces of PE to form the panel. They usually look pretty good when completed.

The closest kit you'll find to her would be the Caldercraft Snake.

Converting a Backyard Shed into a Model Workshop
jwvolz replied to Hank's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Looking really nice Hank. -
There are only a few frames on the dory plans. I traced those onto some basswood sheet to make formers, and also installed the transom at the correct angle. Small strips were bent to shape to form the frames (very severe bends at bottom), and the hull was planked with basswood strips. As the dory has a flat bottom, I did not worry about taper, as it gets sanded flat before the bottom of the hull is installed. It was more important to get the uppermost plank fitted correctly to the sheer.

Very cool Ken. Amazing technology development since then... -

Perfect! Put the Sniper on the starboard side and the HTS on the port side of the intake. They're both in that set. You can then use the GBU-31's or 38's in that set as well. -

Ken, Yes, but they are capable of a lot more now, including more advanced laser functions. For example the Sniper also has a FLIR, digital data recorder, and HDTV with video downlink for both targeting and surveillance. -
Nice work Mike! You certainly were a glutton for punishment with both the subject and scale for your first efforts! If you want a great yellow wings subject, try to track down on eBay an AM SBD-1 Dauntless. One of their nicest kits and it looks great in that paint scheme. My finished one is somewhere in my attic. I'll try to find it and get a picture.

In that case just put the 28 on the starboard side. The HTS is much smaller in diameter. -

In general the Block 50's usually seem to have the HTS mounted even when equipped with Litening/Sniper, but you don't have one in that kit I take it, since it is the Block 25/32 kit. Do you have the Sniper pod? The rest of the ordnance Tamiya gives you is fine with the Sniper pod. Just follow their directions as to which pylons. -
The Latham carried a dory in addition to the seine boat, to secure the other end of the seine as it was circled around a school of fish. There is a plan for one included on the sheet with the seine boat, but it is not very complete. I found a plan online that was noted as "free". I scaled it to 1/48th and printed it out. A simple building board will be constructed and frames made out based on the plans. Shouldn't be too bad to build as it has a flat bottom. I'll build it out of basswood, since it all gets painted anyway.

It's a Sniper pod. A more advanced targeting/surveillance pod. -

Javlin, The pod in those two photos on the port side is the HTS pod for the HARM missile. The Litening pod goes on the starboard side. -
Tiger 1 by marktiedens - FINISHED - Dragon - 1/35 scale
jwvolz replied to marktiedens's topic in Non-ship/categorised builds
Given those paint choices, if you are going to hand brush use Model Masters. I love Vallejo's "Air" line for the airbrush, but the regular stuff just doesn't brush as nicely as MM. -

The Dragon armor kits are very nice. The color you want is German Panzer Grey. Most paint lines have it including Vallejo in the Air line. It faded as it aged, so it will depend upon how weathered you'd like it to be.

If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
