Landlubber Mike reacted to Old Collingwood in Mosquito B Mk IV - FINISHED - Revell - My next non-ship project
Hi all, with the Spit no resigned to the spares department - its given me more time to work on the Mossie, firstly I attacked that nose detailing that I had done before - I took the masking of the nose and carefully re taped it level with start of the frame nearest the fuselage, then I used a very narrow piece of light sanding stick - and sanded the strip I had put on, this went quite well with the sanding stick piece being only very narrow - I was able to control where I was sanding, after I tacked it with tape to get rid of any dust - then I went out side and sprayed a couple of coats of surface primer just over the front area - job done.

So -a brief spell with no rain this gave me the chance to spray the Tamiya Surface Primer - seemed to go ok.
The stick was for me to hold it by the way......

A tiny bit of progress today - I have decided to build her on a little modification - during the Bomber Mosquito's missions it had a secondary role where by it operated as as towing escort for damaged planes from spits to mosquito's, during the war there was a surplus of giant paint brushes that came in perfectly for use as towing handles.................

Yes, MSW needs to add a warning label to Craig's and other build logs on here. I went from not having done a plastic kit since a kid to now having a bunch stacked up on a shelf - ships, planes, and now cars.

thanks OC.....yea, I need to do a couple of things to it..........wish the other pieces were with it. if I'm correct, this is part of a three piece set..........when put together it must have been huge. I was browsing the old model site this evening and I saw this
this would be perfect for one to really do some detail work to. the availability is in question though........someone is interested in it I'll keep tabs on it...........I showed the admiral and even she thought it was neat
thanks again everyone for all the likes

did you watch the Memphis Bell start her engines and run for a bit? it was shown after I looked at the two videos.......thanks for them Lou impressive to see them start up. seeing as I have the other two birds on their perches, I think the Memphis Belle will be standing on her own three wheels. I got home this afternoon to see this in the dining room.
the top opening has a mirror in it.....not sure if I will leave it in there, but there is a light in there. the shelves are wood, but I might have some glass made instead, and put a second light in the lower part. I have to fix one of the drawers
interesting wall art Kevin......if I were to do that, I think it would be a copy of some of the nose art........more Andy Warhol, don'tcha thing
interesting story Thomas

Landlubber Mike reacted to SigEp Ziggy in Revell 1/72 De Havilland D.H. 2
My cat knocked one of my sprues to the floor and my puppy chewed on it! This is what I have now!
It should look like this. I may have to scratch build both frames.

I am excited to post an aircraft build on MSW, who knew, obviously not me! I have so many irons in the fire, but I would like to share this one. I will change out the kit gun and engine with after market parts.

Well, I was not too happy with the anchoring system of this massive (and heavy) vessel. So, I decided to redo it and make it a lot more sturdy.
There was a little bit of sagging and after a few days of standing by itself against the wall, it was not improving. So, this is what I came up with:
You can see the idea: The black tube is going through the anchor plate (2 mm brass plate) and protruding enough to go through the wood brace of the frame. Another piece of tube is added at the juncture to increase the rigidity. The whole thing is soldered, resulting in a very rigid coupling. Now, you can hang a few pounds to the end of the black tube without any trace of sagging.
This is the anchor assembled to the wooden frame. Two screws of 10-32 are holding the anchor plate:
A little bit of spraying and it will be ready:
The two moons are also slightly repainted and the shadow of the giant Jupiter planet is more realistic on each of them.
The vessel is also more straight, due to the better anchoring:
End of that very pleasant project. Everybody that visits has been enjoying the art piece and I hope this Log will entice you to come up with something unusual for this great kit.

I've been tempted into doing this build after watching Craig and his many non-ship projects and picked the Dauntless as I like carrier borne bombers and fighters from the Pacific campaign.
Now it's been at least 40+ years since I did a plastic aircraft model so please bear with me, also its OOB, no mods or aftermarket stuff, just plain as is.
I'll be going with the US navy tri-colour paint scheme but they not arrived yet so maybe a while until I

Landlubber Mike reacted to oneslim in 40mm/56 Twin Bofors by oneslim - FINISHED - scratch diorama by Bob W
Well, after a couple of health problems and a serious modelers block, I have finished Mount #9 40mm/56 Twin Bofors in 1/32 scale. This diorama will be donated to the Millville Army Air Field Museum in the name of Owen Garrison. He was an original Plank Owner aboard CVL-26 USS MONTEREY. At the age of 93 He serves as a Docent, and along with His wife, opens the museum every Saturday to welcome visitors.
The ship structure is scratch built. The gun mount is a SRS resin kit with 20 parts and many items added. The jeep/mule, is a reworked Tamiya kit. The 40mm rounds, with clips, and spent brass, are from Orange Hobby. The figures are a combination of Italeri PT sailors, and Warrior PT crew. With the case the size is:
18 1/2" wide
16 1/2" deep
14 " high
Any And All Questions are Welcome

The first four are general shots, second four are macro shots.

I did it on the Chikuma on the firehose reels when I needed to role them not long and not the hottest part of the flame "trust me" Kevin
but the Eduard PE seems to fit really well.
They have been doing it for quite awhile that's who I am using on my build

Evening,
CDW,
Thanks for the advice. I have my compressor set at 20lbs. Being new to airbrushing I was going to adapt a 1:1 paint/thinner ratio and learn from there.
I figure thin enough to not clog the airbrush, but thick enough to cover.
This past weekend was a perfect one. Three days long and only left the house once.
Did the basic chores and did a fair amount of building on this project and my Niagara.
Didn't think the coffee and creamer was gonna hold out!
Continued placing parts that will be eventually be painted the same as the interior.
I figure once the interior PE is placed I'll try airbrushing the interior. A large area where I can see how the paint lays down.
All parts that straddle the interior where placed, and glued, with the two fuselage halves taped together. But only glued on one side.
Should insure a fair alignment...…..mostly.
Time to make another box from the PE!
The dreaded box!
Bend once!.....and glue.
Came out a bit better!
Started playing with the rear deck.
Not glued on yet.
I must say, being new to PE and which manufacturer is better, but the Eduard PE seems to fit really well.
I can see some Panel Line accent on this once it's painted.
Stay warm
Tom E

Landlubber Mike reacted to James H in ICM 1/48 Spitfire MkIX Scrapped.
Eduard's own Spit kit range is superb, and of course, their PE and resin is designed alongside it and needs (relatively) minimal surgery to add it.
As you have now abandoned this one, I'll show you an image of the Eduard Mk.VIIIHF I built with a resin cockpit etc. No engine of course, but I have built one previously, and know they fit superbly.

Hey guys. Just a small update, nothing to exciting.
I was going to wrap thin ezline around the tiny reels but then gave up.
so I just painted them black. It looks ok.
then I could install some more deck fittings
I think these balconies should have been deck blue.
the deck is starting to fill in.
with that done I can move on. I’ll keep moving across the deck to the stern. I ruff cut out parts for the next section.
these have brass sticking out of the bottom that need to be filed down. There’s about 15 in total.
and after
thats it for now. See I told you it was nothing too exciting. See you soon.

Deck has been planked (including windlass pads and thick pads at the masts) and painted. I masked from templates I made copying the plans and airbrushed the white. The areas that I stained should be gray, based on the instructions, but I didn't like how much of the plank detail disappeared under the white paint, so I elected to just stain it a weathered color.

Good morning everyone
apart from the handling ropes the life boats are finished,
i put everything in place according to the plans, and secured in position, however the forward drum reels are set to far aft to be of use, it looked tight even on the plans, after looking at other builds and seeing the same issue they got moved about 1cm to make them more usable, i may have to move the after hatches now as they might not have enough room
the middle picture drum reels are in place according to the plans, but in reality are to far aft to be of use
reels after being moved, dont quite know what to do about the stain damage on the wood

Afternoon,
Admittedly, I have been dogging this build for a bit of spare time.
I dipped my hand "into the cookie jar" called internet shopping and bought a few more "Needful Things"!
Supplies...…I tell myself.....colors I will eventually need.....appropriate thinner....supplies...….yeah....supplies!
I bought some more paint, that I will eventually need, but heavy on the Tamiya this time with a few more Mr Color paints.
I bought the below guns just because.
They looked cool!
Don't know if there historically correct, looking into that one, but lets see If I can "work em in" some where.
If not, save em for another build.
When I bought the compressor, the spray booth was on sale as well.
We'll see about this, seems pretty straight forward.
It fits my place.
I have the compressor at my feet so I can watch the pressure gauge.
What's a good pressure to work at?
Instead of diving right in and shooting paint, I went with water instead.
I put up the below paper towels in preparation of a cone of water to come spraying out.
When I finally did it, I got it. It atomizes the liquid, I get it now.
I had to spray it on my hand to feel anything coming out. Didn't need the hanging paper towels!
Well, I went a head and started screwing around with the PE.
I decided I wanted to start installing interior items that will want painted when I do finally paint the interior an olive drab from Mr Color.
I made a box.
My very first piece of PE.
I chose this piece because its a simple box, cant be too hard.....right?
Lesson number one......don't bend too many times.
Snapped at 3 different places. Bend once and only once!!!!!
I hacked it in, I'm hoping paint will cover a heck of a lot of sin.

Seems like it's two steps forward and one step back lately.... Oh well. I've been doing lots of clean up and adding subassemblies. Probably have another 10-15 bits to go. I had to remove one of the seats to get access to the cabin as I broke (again) a gun. At least now I'll be able to put it on and not fear (he says knowing that's a lie) that I'll break it again. I'm going to hold off though until just before the glass front end goes on.
Actually, I'm pretty pleased. I still have a few seam lines to fill and and repaint but nothing serious there. And I knocked out a window so have to figure out if I can fit from the inside or just leave it off and claim battle damage.

Denis, @popeye the sailor , does this bad boy count for a build log ? Built in 1906. Been over 2 years in restoration. Had to completely disassemble the backbone and re-glue and install all new screws. Likewise for the basket. Measures 32 feet in length.
After 4 months steaming the hide glue, and removing about 200 screws, side planks removed from backbone.
Extra blocking added to stiffen backbone
Reglued and clamped
Runner plank with 2 coats of tung oil, old bolt holes filled with epoxy before redrilling
Epoxy in splines to repair checking in mast
Main basket (stern) inverted with original planks reinstalled, damaged wood repaired
Re-attaching basket to backbone
Forward basket, boat has 2, this one amidship
