ICM 1/48 Spitfire MkIX Scrapped.

Recommended Posts

I have decided to start this  along with my  Mossie kit,   as there will be times when I can not get the spraying done  outside  due to the weather, so it gives me things to get on with.

I won this  in ebay for a knock down price   - it is an open box  but all bags are sealed,    the ICM  version of the Spit  IX   is  renowned for being the most accurate  model of a Spit  in this scale,  I will build her more or less  straight out the box  as  I understand the cockpit  and parts are very very good.

So to start with  - here's the  top box art  and  quick look at the bag  contents.

I do apologize I put the complete wrong box pic up  - how I dont know  - This is the Right One.spit9bt.jpg.70ad28c78ecf9c2498465a58bf1cbe11.jpg

Evening all,

So I decided to start this today  - the kit calls for the power plant to be assembled first, its a lovely  rendition of the superb Merlin,   it starts with the lower end and sump, to this are attached the two lower cylinder heads  and to each of these the exhaust manifolds  and oil feeds,  I still have more to add  before I start painting and weathering.

So  after dinner  I carried on  - next up was the cradle, this comes in three sections  and the firewall -  I had to glue the one side to the main section (this had to left secured while it set)  then after an hour or so  I glued the other side, this was put a side while cleaned up the fire wall - then I positioned the cradle and glued it to the firewall (this strengthened the cradle  up).

Then it was a case of painting the  cradle and firewall  the same cockpit green as the inside of the Mossie  (it is a generic  RAF  interior colour)  then a bit of a dirty wash followed by some dry brushing.

More work  today   starting by  cleaning up both fuselage sides  - there was quite a bit to trim/sand off,  next  I glued the front engine bay  firewall bulkhead  (I decided to remove the engine mount  from the Merlin  as it was going to foul the fuselage)  I will still fit the engine as it has the exhaust manifolds attached to it.

I  also had some small fitting to add inside the cockpit  - I have to say the quality of the moldings and engraving is very high  and frankly wouldn't really benefit form PE  - this is the status before I add some paint.

Nice work, Spits and Mossies, two of my favorites.

I built several of the ICM a/c many years ago and seem to recall a potential issue with fuselage or engine panel fit when the actual engine is used.  I think I left the engines out and cemented blanking pieces inside the exhaust openings in order to mount the exhaust pipes themselves.  A side benefit is a decent stand-alone Merlin model.

HTH, cheers,

Keith

I had to bevel the edges where the manifold sticks out the fuselage to allow the engine to drop down into place  while dry fitting.

Hmm, "US Air Force Fighter"?  Am I remembering wrong, or were the only AAF Spit the photo recon birds?
That box seems to think it's a Mk VIII, doesn't the IX have clipped wings?  Or, am I remembering that wrong, too?
Remembering things wrong has become all too commonplace.  Sigh.

The clipped wing was done as an effort to compete with the FW-190  that was  killing a lot of  normal spits,   so  I understand they tested a few with clipped wings,    they also put in a more powerful Merlin  and that became the IX,  this  Spitfire had at last the power to deal with the Germans best, they continued to make clipped wing version though  as they gave  short dash speed  improvements at lower  altitudes.

Considering that there was no "US Air Force" as such.... the box is obviously wrong.   It was the AAF... "Army Air Force".

Ok... I'll go quietly now.

Glaring problem number two  thats just  come to me   - I have put the manifolds on  the wrong way  as  they are angled  to compensate for the angled  cylinder heads  - but mine point down to much when they should be pointing upwards  ........can I swear.

Just been down  to the table  took the engine with me into the kitchen  (good light)   then tried  under not the best conditions  to  alter the angle on both  - one side  moved  upwards (result)   and the other  side  came away  clean,     so I class that as a  good outcome.

So what would be a better kit OC? Seems like the only difference between today and yesterday when you were building the most accurate kit available, is that you are going through the three steps back stage of the build. I have had to do that so many times in the short time I have been doing my Huey that sometimes I think I am building the darn thing backwards. Sometimes I even think I would do better if I was building two models, one to learn how to do it using the three steps back for every step forward, and the other to do it right!

Keep plugging at it and I am almost certain you will be comfortable with the results eventually, even if you are not happy with how you got there.

OC and others, here's a link to the Cybermodeler website. He has a chart with the best kit of a particular model for 5 scales, although 1/24 and 1/144 are pretty sparsely populated. And it's not just him making the calls. Others can contribute. The list is weak for ships and armor, since he and his crew are primarily A/C modelers.

https://www.cybermodeler.com/special/topgun.shtml

For Spitfires, scroll down a ways. The blue/grey box highlights the best for a particular model and scale. 1/48 scale is not well served for the Spit

Its ok mark,   this and my Mossie have to be right  (my farther watches me over my shoulder)   so I want to do my very best for him,  and I didn't know the ICM kit was going to be such a pig to build or be in such bad shape after closer inspection   - and like I said the instructions were  total rubbish  most of what I was doing was guess work  but look where that got me....

I do understand the frustration, OC.   I hope you can find a kit that will be a fitting tribute.

I'm going to scrap this and wait  for a better kit.

OC.

Eduard's own Spit kit range is superb, and of course, their PE and resin is designed alongside it and needs (relatively) minimal surgery to add it.

As you have now abandoned this one, I'll show you an image of the Eduard Mk.VIIIHF I built with a resin cockpit etc. No engine of course, but I have built one previously, and know they fit superbly.
