seems symmetrical maybe a bit of gap but not enough to worry about. will be sanding/filling as needed bow view on the camera makes it look like the starboard side is higher/further but irl its almost exactly even

I think Druxey is correct and your garboard ends way too far forward. Looking at the picture the garboard should probably be ending at around the 3rd bulkhead or somewhere close to it and not the first as you have it now. The curve of the garboard should probably be starting somewhere between 4th and 5th bulkhead. And gently sweeping down. The second plank should follow along and be bent in to lay flat. Following the article section 11 on page 20 describes this. I think everyone has pain with this when beginning

Garboard and first lower planks are in. With just about 20-30 sec of soak in water and careful clamping and drying with heat gun you can get a fairly good bend even with basswood. gotta be careful though this thing will definitely burn the wood not to mention human flesh...

Thanks Dave and thank you Ryland. The conference was great and as always it’s a motivator and inspiration to get back in the shipyard. Next up is the garboard plank which seems to have given others quite a bit of “learning experience“.

Work finally easing up a bit. We went through a massive expansion basically doubling our size over the course of a few months. Back in the shipyard more soon. Here first attempt to start the planking. More fuzzy basswood. Camera picks up all the fuzz and dents.

How was the 2018 Conference?
MEDDO replied to VinceMcCullough's topic in NAUTICAL RESEARCH GUILD - News & Information
Absolutely Dan, It really was nice. Without the hard work of the board and others it wouldn’t have happened and they all get a round of applause! -

Now I have a "collection" ☺️ Here are some photos from the model display room wonderful brass from Ken Foran and from the carving roundtable -
Was just reading the most recent issue of the Journal and there is a nice article on Lady Isabel by Steve Wheeler and he was talking about red alder. Never heard of anyone using this type before. Seemed to work well there. Anyone else have experience with it?

Dremel rotary tool - which one?
MEDDO replied to RPaul's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
I have had good luck with the Foredom brand. I started with a dremel 395 with flex shaft + bunch of accessories. It was loud lots of vibrations heated up and would work but once you start using small bits for precision work the difference is really noticeable. -
Chuck I think you are going to get a lot more than just 8-10 in the group.

I agree many are really nicely finished, true works of art. I used WR-LPU (the water reducible linear polyurethane) as the regular spar varnish would of taken much longer as each coat has to dry for 24 hrs then you sand in between. The LPU dries in about an hour and then you can just coat it up. I have a friend who has built a few kayaks, canoes, and dingys and his solution the the "I don't want to mess up that nice finish" problem is..... "Get a glass of your favorite Scotch. Drink it it while admiring all your glorious work and contemplating how long this took and how much you learned during your journey. When finished with the drink put the glass down, take a deep breath....and push the boat off the sawhorses and let it crash to the ground.... Now it has a few scratches and you will not feel bad about using it as intended" -

This is really wonderful. It is a great feeling the first time you get out on the water in something you built. I was so nervous the first time I took out my Murrelet (build summary in my sig) that I almost fell in the water trying not to scratch it up. Got over that pretty quick. -
Dave this looks really great especially with the contrasting colours.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
