This is a great subject..... what size are chain rudder pendants on various size ships?   They were to prevent loss of the rudder if it became unshipped and needed to be sized to hold onto the rudder and hardware.  I would not rely on Caldercraft having the right size without doing some research. 19 links per inch seems to be almost double the size that could be used.

Assume an oak rudder on a 74 gun ship weighs about 7000 pounds.   3/8" chain can hold about 7000 pounds so with two chains, one port, one starboard attached to the spectacle plate, it can hold double that amount.  3/8" chain links are about 2" long.  At scale these would be .028" long or about 35 links per inch.   I cannot find any specifications so far, so hopefully a member will have sizes from contemporary based sources.  (Walther railroad supplies has chain up to 40 per inch.)

Good mathematical way to approach the question...

I know im late to this party, but here goes, In approx 2019 I was doing a central heating job and I saw that the chap had a plank on frame hull, I ask him about it and he said he had bought the complete Hatchet battleship Bismarck magazine series, I ask how he was doing as I was a keen modeler myself and he said he had developed parkinsons and he could not manage it any more, so I proposed buying it off him, he said that he would be happy to give it too me to finish, well of course I jumped at the chance, so he gave it to me, here due to life, moving, renovating etc November 2023, I have finally got around to getting it out, he had the unfinished bits and parts in two binders and the mags in two further binders, so far it has taken me a week to wade through the first mag binder to check what parts had been fitted and what was to do and have come across some discrepancies and some plans and drawings missing, I phoned Hackets and they no longer do the static models and only do the motorised version, Ive seen references in this thread to the fact that it is a an Amati model which it is according to the plans, do you still have the plans and drawings? if so would it be possible to buy them from you?

    regards

    John.

    Hi John

You can have mine, I should be finished in the new year and I'll send them on..see my log.

    Cheers Ian

  3. The deck level structure has its PE  and a quick spray of grey so I can see any imperfections easier. The second and third level has 90% PE complete. The sections are not attached to the hull. I wont do that until they have had a final coat of grey ---and the dreaded black and white stripes applied.  After all this work and yet not one single gun however small has yet to be done.

You should have seen me going at her with the chisel to get the old Skegs off....that was scary.

    It is, however, necessary.

The old skegs were unsupported at the ends, the props unbalanced, and the shafts were not sealed.

I could have tried adding A-frames, but that would not have been correct for scale, and would still not have rectified the not-sealed shafts that leaked.

What a fab ship , can't wait to see those props turning 😎

I love that you try the black and white stripes camouflage. It is very well done.

    Thanks Yves

A bit of a pain but I think will really stand out once completed, this is my first 'non wooden' Napoleonic ship I have attempted. I saw a few being done on here and just goat the bug  LOl .

I spray the stipes and then do the P.E parts which are easy to hand paint in.. It would be a nightmare to mask off even with a small amount of detail in place,

Next is to stripe the funnel-- then detail it...
