WackoWolf reacted to donrobinson in HMS Kingfisher by rafine - FINISHED - Lauck Street Shipyard - 1/48
I know it's been years since this build Bob, But I just found this and would like to say what a beautiful build and amazing work. I have the LSS AVS on my shelf that someday when the skill level is better I'll start. I would also like to add the rigging like you did on your Kingfisher, however, I'll need a few more builds before all this happens.
Have a Good Day

Thanks, Jaxboat. If you have the kit, you should build it. While there are shortcomings, it provides a unique opportunity to build a fully framed model without having to scratch build all of the framing. In addition, there are now so many great build logs for Swans on MSW and the availability of the TFFM books to really inspire and show the possibilities for enhancing the kit. There are so many things that I wish now that I had done. I hope you have a go at it.

To to continue: The ball-end lever for the locking bolt was fashioned from a short piece of steel in several steps: first the stem that will be a push-fit in a hole of the bolt was turned;
chucking the material with this stem, then the main part of the lever was turned conical, leaving a part cylindrical for the ball-head;
the conical part was given a waist using the free-hand turning rest;
and finally the ball-head was formed using the radius-turning tool.
The tool-bit in this case was a 2 mm HSS-bit in a special holder that allows to form a sphere with a sharp edge at the stem.

You can give a twist to almost everything it seems ... Nice work on the ebony. Didn't expect the curvature would be possible .. well done

I think the price is dictated by demand. I imagine the printing runs of these were fairly limited. I paid $45 for my copy a year ago. I see you can pick up a copy for $40 now. Not too pricey in my opinion for what you get.

And that is just they way they look at it LOL. My passport is like a road map from going back and forth to china over the last 5 year and I have seen all sorts of stuff that you can buy there. I got a heck of a collection of DVD movies from there most of them Blue-ray and they only cost like 2.25 each, all new titles.

Mast Houses
The mast houses are made up of 2 stacked laser cut pieces with the holes for the masts and ventilators pre-drilled.
Given the rough faces from the laser cutting and the need to eliminate the seam between the pieces I thought that sanding them smooth would be tedious and might result in rounded corners so I decided to face them with sheet styrene. Doing so gave a nice smooth “steel” finish, sharp corners and a slight coaming along the deck edge.
The details are a combination of kit items, scratch, and after market. Between them they are the anchor point for 15 masts, booms and cranes so there will be a lot of rigging around them.
Next will be the start of adding the 160+ bulwark braces (maybe not tedious but certainly repetitive).

Aft Deckhouse
The aft deckhouse went together just like each layer of the main house; 3 wood lifts topped by a laser cut plastic deck, and the sides covered with thin ply.
The deck edge coamings and underside stiffening girders are scratch. One item that will be different from the plans is the large gun tub. Rather than have a solid waist-high shield I’ll install a single strand lifeline, like you can see in the upper background of the photo below, the early Libertys seemed to have that style. Not sure what I will use for the lifeline stanchions yet but they are quite a ways down the road anyway.
Next up will be the 3 crane houses.

Jud,
Thanks for posting the photo of the USS Ammen. The prop shafts appear identical to the Arleigh-Burke, but the Ammen props have 3 blades while the A-B props have 5. (see below.)
The props in the kit have a metal hub and photo-etched brass blades. I haven't built them yet but they didn't seem nice enough, so I ordered a pair of of 25mm cast props from http://www.model-dockyard.com/. I'll decide what to use when they come.

Can't help with Elves, but the British OO-scale is nominally 1:76, so there may be something suitable in British railway modellers ranges. Have a look here for instance: http://www.langley-models.co.uk/
British OO-scale white-metal figurines don't have the same standard of sculpting as, say, the German Preiser HO-scale (1:87) hard plastic ones, but some of them seem to be quite nice.
