Though the lateen is now known to have been developed earlier than previously thought -  as evidenced by this tombstone, dated to the second century AD

this is the only evidence for such prior to the 5th century; all other contemporary representations I'm aware of show square sails. So a square sail is far more likely for the Sea of Galilee ship, which is dated to the first century AD. Indeed, i have seen both typrs depicted on both Egyptian and Phoenician boats of the general era.

It stands to reason that there existed both lateen and square sails in the Meditteranean Sea at the time. Indeed, I have seen dipictians of both Egyptian and Phoenician boats.

  2. Marc,

As usual, you are doing spectacular work, but I am confused about one point.  I was looking closely at the starboard quarter and transom in the photos above and I noticed that it appears that you left everything closed.  I had always thought that the walkways should be open, but there has been ongoing discussion on this point. Tanneron shows them open, yet, other builders cite the Berain illustrations showing them closed.  Granted, they are two different ships but it has introduced a level of controversy.  Can you please elaborate?

    Thanks!

Are any kit's guns accurate?  One big problem I have with all  kit guns I have seen is that they are not to scale and they do not accurately show the differences in any particular armament.  For example, no ship of the line model kit shows that these ships usually had 32 pounders on the lowest gunde ck, 24 pounders on the next deck, and 9 pounders to 16 pounders on the highest decks. Yet, kit manufacturers supply us with only one size for all decks.

In my humble opinion, they all need replacement to be more in scale.

I stand corrected with my HMS Prince kit.  In my kit, there are three different gun sizes, all barrels are beautifully molded and the barrels are clear.  All guns seem to be in scale.  However, such is not the case in some of my other ships of the line kits.

    Hello everyone,

I recently received the HMS Prince by constructo in 1/61, and I am sadly surprised by the poor quality of the guns. Unlike the other details, there are big traces of mouldings, they are not drilled and the axes are not even straight.

This does not look at all like what I see on the plan, and I looked at a lot of build logs but I never found this type of gun.

    Are these pieces defective?

Maybe this is normal on the latest version of this kit?

Do you have any advice on how to fix it properly?

Unfortunately I don't think that my efforts would allow me to get a good result, especially since there are more than 80 guns to rework, on a model that I paid 400€.

The rest of the kit seems to me of good quality, especially the new sails which are much more beautiful than the ones on the pictures.

  5. Obvious,

I just found this beautiful build!  You did a great job; I am most impressed!  I saw that you asked a question on Page 2 about attaching yards to the masts but I never read anyone answering.  You should look up "parrels", which differ slightly depending on the nation building the ship.  Good luck on your next ship!

I found about six different references on the best technique to copper a hull. All different! As you can see below, I ended up inventing my own laying in two rows of dressing belt at the waterline and four rows at the keel, then locating the widest point of girth on the hull and drawing a line perpendicular to the waterline. At the end of most rows the plates will be trimmed to fit against the preceding row. As expected the widest point will require one or two "filler" rows. That's the plan anyway. At least it's tidy! A note for anyone considering coppering: give the hull a coat of copper colour paint before you start. A few very tiny cracks of "white" are peeking through. Hindsight really is 20/20.

I love this method!  I am building a small POB HMS Victory and am detailing it as I go.  Your coppering method might be an answer to several problems I have had coppering her. Thanks!

  7. I have one recommendation for you.  There is a website dedicated to paper modeling, www.papermodelers.com.  It has individual sections for modeling in every genre, including one specifically for ships and watercraft.  Members have really helped me on occasion!  And, the work there can be incredible!

So I’m pretty sure the solid hull version of this kit has been out of production for awhile. The original kit was a solid hull but was discontinued in 1993 when the plans for the kit were rewritten to include a POB frame and all the necessary material for planking. I’m guessing this was done to attract different types of ship modelers. You may be able to find a vintage kit on eBay but i think you would have a hard time finding one. If you do let me know! I would love to see some one build this kit with a solid hull. Hope that helps!

    Bradley,

Thanks but I do know this.  I have been searching eBay but am not yet ready to purchase.
