Trussben reacted to glbarlow in HMS Winchelsea 1764 by glbarlow - FINISHED - 1:48
Having gathered the material and paused my previous Flirt build I’m ready to start Winchelsea.
First I had to do a few modifications to my workshop to accommodate the much larger Winchelsea by increasing my workspace width.
I’ve opted for Alaskan Yellow Cedar, after building Cheerful using it I know just how nice a wood it is when finished and how satisfactory it is to work with. It’s all there in the white topped plastic box in the corner ready to go, along with the first several chapters of laser cut parts.
Since the plans are too large for the counter where I normally keep them I stored my Pegasus framed draft and hung the plans using velcro fasteners. In theory I can remove them without damaging the wall and easily change which sheet of the plans is hanging. I guess I’ll find out. I printed two copies of the plans. As I discovered with Cheerful it’s handy to have a set I can cut up at various stages of the build.
I opted for the starter kit from Chuck. I have no desire to cut my own bulkheads or find the lite-ply to cut them from. I’m more than content with Chuck’s already perfectly cut set. I’ll get to know it really well during the fairing stage - after I figure out how to fair something this huge without breaking it or me. I started by transferring the bearding line using tracing paper. Interesting that the middle section is reversed from the other two with the laser etching.
I also bought 1/16th acrylic sheets on from Amazon to provide a nice flat surface for it and the stem. And finally the build board, I went to Home Depot to pick up some MDF or something cheap but this scrap piece of beautiful oak called out to me. I sanded the edges and put a coat of WOP on it (why not) and will next add the brackets.
Finally, my thanks to Chuck for this incredible design, his detailed chapter instructions, and parts that go with each. I’m well behind so many great Winnie builds already in progress and at every stage of construction. I know I’ll greatly benefit from those many build logs already posted, thank all of you for taking the time to post and explain your work. I doubt I’ll have much to add (if you've seen my other logs you know that won't stop me:-), yet I will enjoy sharing my progress as well as I move along.
Let’s begin!

Trussben reacted to Guillermo Eduardo Madico in HMS Winchelsea 1764 by Guillermo Madico - semi scratch build
After a long pause, I decided to build the capstan to get back on the horse.
it was a lot of fun. Thank you Chuck for the extra pieces.
I gave it a finish with water based wood conditioner.
I will go back to the model now that i got some practice.

Thanks Matt, most of the credit goes to Chuck’s beautiful design.
Thank you for those that are following my posts and for all the likes.
I added the columns to the galleries. This was a lot of delicate work wit mini chisels and diamond files.
The resin figures were painted as recommended by Chuck. I used an artist brush to add the stain into the shadow areas of the figures. Then I removed the stain to create highlights with a silicon artist brush. After 24 hours the figures were sealed. I got a macro lenses for my phone, you could see where the stain accumulated. In some areas you could see doted lines which are left by 3D printing or Jack’s 3D carving.
The picture below shows a before and after to show best the effect.
My intend was to match as much as posible the colors of the surrounding wood. The detail of this carvings are amazing; for example the leave Coronas around the circular gun ports are not identical but rather mirror image of each other. Jack’s attention to detail shows up very clear. The windows fit was perfect thanks to those spacers used during construction.
The quarter galleries got the same treatment. I added the acetate film after cleaning the laser char with alcohol. I glued the windows before adding the top and bottom parts of the columns.
In the picture bellow, you could see how nicely the gallery and Qgallery windows align. Gallery windows are not glued.
I paid special attention to the placement of the feet and heads of the main figures and carved the moldings whit mini chisels to accommodate them. I noticed that Jack rolled the tail fin of the fish to fit the molding so I followed the placement of the fish as in the plans. Everything got sealed with Testor’s matte seal.
I chose to paint black behind the corner figures to enhance the contrast and it payed off. The molding around the figures were carved with mini chisels for a title fit
Once the darks behind the gallery windows build up the white paint will show best. I am planning to use a little white here and there in the model because I will plank the deck with holly.
Next I will add the hand painted freezes. I have collected a bunch of Mer figures that I will add.
Best,
G

Thank you Fred and for all the likes.
My plan is to draw and hand paint the figures at 3x to 5x and turn them into digital images I could shrink to size and place to fit the freezes.
I have collected a bunch of images I like from sculptures and I am drafting them. I will post the paintings as I go.
here is another drafted in an office PosIt at about 3x
Bellow I adde the window seals
The roof piece goes in
Slate shingles with some weathering looking paint
This help me build the Transom more confortable.
All the moldings are in and the red decoration on to of the window frames; need to touch up the paint a little. Painted black the top of the frames.
A good view of the moldings. I added some read on the arches in the side windows. I have seen that in contemporary models.
I am holding on with some moldings which I will add when the freezes are ready.
Next the widow columns.
Best,
G

Trussben reacted to Bitao in NAIAD 1797 by Bitao - 1:60
The saddest thing for me was that while everyone else was making progress in post construction, I was regressing in reconstruction and failure. But I'm glad you guys supported it, especially Greg and Druxey for their timely comments! I learned something. It's been specially modified today. Also feel harmonious and much better-looking!

It's all part of our learning curve, bitao. My first fully framed model had parts re-built four times!

This is the third time to rework, the positioning is finally right. It's not a good idea to trust your feelings with the naked eye, wasting a lot of time and energy. . .
