Trussben reacted to westwood in HMS Winchelsea 1764 by westwood - 1:48
Finally another update.
I finished the port lid with the hinges.
I just left them straight, it made my job easier but I also like it that way.
The canons for chapter six are actually done, so I can move on to chapter seven.
I tweaked and glued the bulkheads and doors. So far only the beams are glued on top.
Then I dry fitted the rest of the deck beams and glued the hanging knees in place.
Next, I glued the lodging knees to the beams so they could be removed.
Only when I have the pump handles ready, will I glue the canons and beams in place for good.

My Chapter 10 posts were too long, I won’t take the time to do that much again.
The quarterdeck is pretty much the last “big” thing to do, starting with planking and ending with rails. It’s been such a journey from the first framing, through months of planking and the many detailed components assemblies since. Not sure I want it to end.
To keep it short, here are just four final photos of the quarterdeck.

Thanks for the comments chaps.
Here is an update. I have completed the deck. That seems a big milestone - with the hull and deck planked all the repetetive donkey work is behind and now its the fun fiddly bits.
To plank the hull I fixed a battern with a curve that looked something like it and then tick stripped and planked from the outside inboard. I know its not the approved way but it works for me.
I glued the deck fittings down with a prit-stick - is that what you Americans call rubbber glue? - so I could pull then up to sand the deck easily.
I left out the captain's chequerboard floor. I'm not quite sure why. I suppose I slightly prefer plain old planks. What, I wonder would the chequerboard be made of? Patrick O'Brian has Captain Aubrey rolling his up when calling action stations I seem to recall so I guess its a waxed sailcloth ?
I mad the fixed blocks up on my Proxxon mill.
And here is the present state of play:
All the best everyone

Time for an update after weeks of inactivity because of work and flu/corona after completing chapter 3.
I made a start with chapter 4 and am also preparing for masts, just to keep my options open, when I might feel I have place to showcase a fully rigged Winnie in my house 😉👍🏻.

Trussben reacted to AON in HMS Bellerophon 1786 by AON – scale 1:64 – 74-gun 3rd Rate Man of War - Arrogant-Class
Rather then continue work on my standard knees, grating, decking or the last of the three stairways to the hold, I decided it was time to tackle the thing I've been avoiding... the hawse holes. The contract states they are 15" diameter, 15/64" at scale. I first double checked my heights then drilled my pilot holes at 5/64".
Next, with a new sharp bit, I drilled one inboard hawse hole very carefully and slowly with a backing board held on the inside.
Success! That was easy.
Drilled the outboard hole and it happened. She split and flew off.
That was unexpected.
I setup the other side with clamps to help hold her together.
The outboard face of each of those holes have tear out chips in them!
So, I did the only thing left to do.
Glued the broken piece back on, clamped it up and left the room.
I won't be back working on her until Monday afternoon.
Good night world.

Limber strakes
I guess these strakes are for the most part hidden. Still, having never made them before I decided to give these a try. I used the plan drawings as usual for the templates. Rather than shape them exactly to the template, I left some wiggle room in case adjustments where needed. The rabbet on the inside edge was cut with a simple scraper made from a hacksaw blade.
After adding the center section, I proceeded to add the fore and aft sections while trying to maintain as smooth a run along the outer edge of the strakes as possible. Both the aft and fore sections have a twist which needs to be taken into account one way or another. I was able to twist the aft section with wet heat and hold it in position while the slow drying CA set. I couldn't get enough twist in the fore section. If these were made from AYC rather than boxwood, it wouldn't have been a problem. Rather than torture myself, I went with some very expensive and exotic tools in order to give me a helping hand.
