George, Probably the best tutorials I have seen to date including other sites and u-tube. Simple, plain, excellent photos, so even an idiot like myself would understand. Wish I had this when I started my HMS Victory build in 2013. Placing this one in favorites. Very nice.- 10 replies

As you know we have had this discussion before aka ratlines-shrouds-twice. I advised someone on this site who was having trouble with the placement of blocks and eyes and plans were. I advised a modeler told me when I was having those same problems always read ahead always, somethings show up early and cause problems and then later in the plans assemblies pop up that should have been placed in the beginning always read ahead especially with foreign makers and translation problems. That happened to be you and that advice saved me a lot of grief. Thanks for your support

Druxey, As we speak have made a new mast painted and pinned the bottom, have drilled a hole in the cap to add stability to the mast in addition to the pin. Learned a valuable lesson should have replaced the mast after the first or even the second break before the rigging was added. Shortcuts are nice but this one cost me time and I lost all impetus. This wasn't the first time all three decks were warped (ebay model my daughter bought they must have had it in the attic) instead of cutting new decks (I had the wood) I tried to steam and flatten those provided. Bad idea If you examine the decks really close it is apparent. Thankfully the average person will not be able to tell. Enough of my whine got a good attitude rigging will be redone this date and I can move forward without the help of a Xanax.

No to weak, did that the first time, the second time mast totally severed reattached drilling a hole and used a brass pin to anchor. This time wood is to weak I thought of gluing, sistering which would look really bad or 2 have moon bases which would look bad (always looking for the shortcut) but won't work this time. Thanks for the response, have tried covertly to eliminate the felines but mamas babies.

I rarely use super glue and use watered down white elmer's on all rigging, blocks and eyes. It will take time but in the long run I agree the 3 quickies I mentioned would probably lead to more serious problems, since I am closing in on the finish do not want another hiccup at the end causing worse problems. Thanks for your advice it is greatly appreciated.

Need assistance, the uppermost part of the mainmast had been damaged twice by cats. The first time I replaced that portion of the mast. The second time not having any dowels I placed a small diameter brass pin in the base of the mast and drilled a hole resetting that portion of mast. Now my dilemma (see pic) I had just finished some rigging from foremast and mainmast to port side chain plates. when I hit a lamp loosening my last repair. It all ready has a pin, it's only held in place by rigging and a tine bit of mast that had not completely broken. I thought of sistering the base of the broken mast portion to the mainmast with maybe 2x2mm piece of walnut, which would stand out like a sore thumb, brace the bottom with a collar of 2 u shaped pieces of 1.5x3mm walnut, or trying to complete the rigging for the port side of the topmost portion of the mainmast to chain plates hoping that will pull all back into place. If all this does not work I am faced with cutting a lot of rigging and reshaping and installing that portion of mast, and after redoing all my shroud and ratlines twice am not looking forward to this considering I am 90% finished. Someone please make my day.

Mike, I was having some problems akin to you, and had to get really inventive in accessing some hardware that had been placed and was almost inaccessible further on in thee build. I don't know how many sheets of plans you have but Grant Dale advised me always read ahead, always specifically with foreign makers. It was valuable advice. I found some that some hardware, blocks and rigging that was omitted earlier in the plans showed up later :(and was almost impossible to add, and you could also wait to place items that would be impossible to access if you placed according to the plans. Study all pages front to back and always read ahead for possible problems unforeseen in the first pages of plans. Hope I didn't get to wordy. Best of luck

Tim, Just jumped in, quite a history with the liberty's. They had a fleet mothballed in the Tensaw River in the Mobile Delta just north of Mobile Bay. It was referred to as the Ghost Fleet (it looked like it moored side by side on a foggy morning). At one point we had security on them until they scrapped them. You wouldn't believe the amount of people that tried to pillage ships lights, engine room telegraphs binnacle even ships dishes. We guarded it well until they were made into artificial fishing reefs. The politicians ended up with all the nautical items mentioned, nothing was salvaged for a museum. Looking forward to see your build progress.

David, There is one sunk approx. 20 miles south of the Sand Island Light off Mobile Bay that divers have pulled artifacts from. It should have been left alone and treated as a seaman's graveyard, a lot of merchantmen were torpedoed off of the east coast down to the Carolina's. If I remember right in World war I German submarines accounted for approx. a dozen sinkings off the east coast.

Grant, Did not realize you were an engineer, and electrician believe you could work in a shipyard after you complete this. The dash and gauges right on. Looking good my friend.

Bruce, Looked at both on line will go that direction, both have great reviews. Thanks for the response that's why I love this site there's always an answer and for a next to nothing novice carver (myself) it tends to save modelers money from buying tools they do not need or there is always a cheaper alternative. Dr Per I assume arbor tech did not return for an encore. Thanks for the heads up. -

Scanning internet for sharpening guides and saw this power chisel. It sells for approx. $ 200.00 US. Looks interesting and they state you will be a master craftsman. It sounds good, but it looks like it could be a little unwieldy for intricate carving no matter what they state. Any thoughts, the only review I could find was a 12 year old who (and his father thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread) Your thoughts

Wayne, Thanks for the response, and assistance. A set of chisels I ordered and a flexible extension for my dremel arrived last week. as stated earlier I have only carved a turkey and at times butchered that. I am going to practice on some cypress I have before I ruin a $ 70.00 piece of wood . I think I have it right the Waca could be up to 60' so .5:1 would be 30 inches Maybe?? I am playing now have to finish rigging my Victory when I am ready I will start a build log by displaying and un-boxing my stick. thanks again

Rob, You say a fair time ago, if any company warranted a part with a time limit I would say the part would be replaced in that time frame. How long is a fair amount of time. Not to cause a hullabaloo but you may not be fair to Model Expo in requesting a new hull that is not defective but hacked by a previous modeler. It is not a perfect solution but you may be able to use a filler, wood putty, and reshape the hull. and a repaint may not be perfect but this was an older freebie. My thoughts, no disrespect intended. John
